The letter that changed everything
The rain fell heavily on the rusty roof of the small apartment where eighteen-year-old Maya Lawson lived with her grandmother.
Maya sat by the window, staring at the storm outside.
Another rejection letter lay on the table.
Another dream crushed.
She had applied for a scholarship to one of the best universities in the country, hoping it would be her ticket out of poverty. Instead, she received the same answer she had grown used to.
"Unfortunately, your application was unsuccessful."
Maya sighed and folded the letter.
"Maybe some people are just born unlucky."
Her grandmother looked up from her knitting.
"Don't ever say that."
Maya forced a smile.
"It's true, Grandma. We barely have enough money for food. I don't even know how we're going to pay next month's rent."
The old woman remained silent.
There was something strange in her eyes.
Something Maya couldn't understand.
Suddenly, a loud knock echoed through the apartment.
Bang!
Bang!
Bang!
Maya frowned.
"Who could that be in this weather?"
She opened the door.
Standing outside was a man in a black suit holding a silver briefcase.
He looked completely dry despite the heavy rain.
"Miss Maya Lawson?"
"Yes?"
The man handed her a sealed envelope.
"This belongs to you."
Before she could ask another question, he turned and walked away.
Within seconds, he disappeared into the rain.
Maya stared at the envelope.
Her name was written on it in elegant golden handwriting.
"Grandma?"
The old woman's knitting needles dropped onto the floor.
Her face turned pale.
"No..."
"What?"
"Open it."
Maya carefully broke the seal.
Inside was a letter.
As she read the first line, her heart nearly stopped.
To Miss Maya Lawson,
As the last surviving heir of Arthur Blackwood, you are hereby summoned to claim ownership of Blackwood Academy.
Maya blinked.
Then blinked again.
"What?"
Her grandmother closed her eyes.
The room suddenly felt smaller.
"Grandma... who is Arthur Blackwood?"
The old woman looked at her with tears forming in her eyes.
"He was your grandfather."
Maya froze.
"My grandfather died before I was born."
"That's what I wanted you to believe."
The words hit her like lightning.
The letter slipped from her fingers.
For eighteen years she had believed she came from an ordinary family.
For eighteen years she had thought she had nothing.
Now a mysterious stranger was telling her she owned an entire academy.
An academy she had never heard of.
An academy left to her by a grandfather she supposedly never knew existed.
The thunder outside roared.
Maya picked up the letter again.
At the bottom was a final message.
You must arrive at Blackwood Academy within seven days.
Failure to appear will result in permanent forfeiture of your inheritance.
Beneath the message was another line written in red ink.
A line that made her blood run cold.
Be careful. Someone inside the academy does not want you to arrive alive.
Maya's hands trembled.
"What kind of school is this?"
Her grandmother looked away.
"A dangerous one."
Outside, another flash of lightning illuminated the dark sky.
For the first time in her life, Maya realized the biggest mystery wasn't the academy.
It was her own family.
And someone was willing to kill to keep those secrets buried.
