10 April 1692, Sunday We should have gone to listen to the sermons this day, but neither Lizzie nor I had the heart for it. If they notice we were not there (as I’m sure someone shall) I shall say twas Lizzie’s condition that kept us away. If we have to pay the fine for not attending, then I shall pay the fine. I have paid it many times before. My mind is too full to sit through a day-long sermon. I saw a list of the accused and there are so many of them. I’ve reread the names so often I can recite them from memory. Even when I do not want to know who they are, the names poke me, tug me, stir at my conscience.
