The First Day
The city was already awake when Samantha Reyes stepped off the crowded bus. Towering buildings stretched toward the sky, their glass windows reflecting the golden morning sunlight. Cars filled the streets. People hurried past with coffee cups in hand and phones pressed against their ears. Everyone seemed to know exactly where they were going. Samantha tightened her grip on the folder in her hands. Inside it was the opportunity she had dreamed about for years. Today was her first day at Montgomery Enterprises. Her heart pounded. Not because she was afraid. Because she couldn't believe it was real. Just a month ago, she had been sending applications to every company she could find. Hundreds of emails. Dozens of interviews. And then, somehow, she had received the one offer she never expected. Personal Assistant to Richard Montgomery. The Richard Montgomery. One of the most powerful businessmen in the country. The man whose name appeared in magazines, newspapers, and business journals every week. Samantha still remembered staring at the acceptance email for nearly ten minutes before screaming loud enough to wake her entire family. A smile touched her lips. The memory warmed her heart. Her mother had cried. Her younger brother had danced around the living room. For the first time in years, hope had filled their small house. And Samantha had made herself a promise. She would not waste this opportunity. No matter what. Taking a deep breath, she lifted her eyes. Montgomery Enterprises stood before her. The skyscraper looked even more impressive in person. Its silver exterior shimmered under the sunlight. Employees in elegant business attire moved through the revolving doors. The building practically screamed success. And suddenly... Samantha felt very small. "You can do this," she whispered to herself. Then she walked inside. --- The lobby was breathtaking. Marble floors. Crystal lighting. Modern architecture. Everything looked expensive. A receptionist greeted her with a professional smile. "Good morning. How may I help you?" "Samantha Reyes. I'm starting today." The receptionist checked her computer. "Welcome to Montgomery Enterprises, Ms. Reyes." The words made Samantha's stomach flutter. Welcome. She actually belonged here. At least for now. After receiving her identification badge and orientation materials, she followed another employee toward the executive floor. The elevator ride felt endless. Each passing second increased her nerves. What if she made a mistake? What if she wasn't qualified enough? What if— The elevator doors opened. "Samantha?" She turned. A woman in her early thirties approached with a friendly smile. "Hi. I'm Claire. Executive Coordinator." Samantha immediately relaxed. "It's nice to meet you." "You too. Come on. I'll show you around." As they walked through the office, Samantha noticed how busy everyone seemed. Phones rang. Printers hummed. Employees rushed between meetings. The entire floor moved like a perfectly synchronized machine. Claire stopped beside a desk near a large office. "This will be your workspace." Samantha's eyes widened. The desk was beautiful. Much nicer than anything she had expected. "Wow." Claire laughed. "Good reaction. Most people say the same thing." Samantha ran her fingers over the polished surface. This was real. She was really here. Then Claire's expression became serious. "One warning." Samantha blinked. "Warning?" "Mr. Montgomery values professionalism more than anything." "Oh." "He's fair. But demanding." Samantha nodded. "I understand." "Good." Claire smiled again. "Then you'll survive." --- Unfortunately, surviving became much harder thirty minutes later. Because Samantha accidentally spilled coffee on a stranger. A very handsome stranger. "Oh my goodness!" The words flew out of her mouth. Coffee splashed across the front of the man's white dress shirt. The man looked down. Then slowly raised his eyes toward her. Samantha wanted the floor to swallow her whole. He was gorgeous. Dark hair. Sharp jawline. Confident posture. And eyes that looked annoyingly amused. Not angry. Amused. Which somehow made everything worse. "I'm so sorry," Samantha rushed out. The stranger glanced at the stain. Then at her. Then back at the stain. "Hm." "Hm?" she repeated nervously. "That's unfortunate." "Unfortunate?" He nodded. "It was my favorite shirt." Samantha's horror doubled. "Oh no." A grin appeared on his face. "I'm kidding." She stared. The stranger laughed. Actually laughed. And suddenly Samantha realized he had been teasing her. "You scared me!" "Sorry." "No, you're not." "Not really." The grin widened. For a moment, Samantha forgot to breathe. Then she remembered she was supposed to be embarrassed. "You should warn people before joking like that." "I'll keep that in mind." He tilted his head slightly. "First day?" "Is it that obvious?" "A little." Samantha groaned. The stranger chuckled. Something about him felt effortless. Comfortable. Dangerously charming. "Well," she said, "I should probably get back before I lose my job." "Reasonable." She started walking away. Then paused. "Again... I'm sorry about the coffee." "No worries." She nodded and continued down the hallway. Completely unaware that the stranger watched her leave. And smiled. --- The rest of the morning passed quickly. Emails. Schedules. Meeting preparations. Notes. Samantha focused on proving she deserved to be there. By lunchtime, she was exhausted. But happy. Very happy. For the first time in a long time, she felt like her future was finally moving forward. That feeling lasted exactly three minutes. Because Claire suddenly appeared beside her desk. "Samantha." "Yes?" "Mr. Montgomery wants to see you." Her stomach dropped. "What?" "Now." "What did I do?" Claire laughed. "You'll find out." That wasn't comforting. At all. --- Richard Montgomery's office was larger than Samantha's entire apartment. The city skyline stretched behind him through floor-to-ceiling windows. Everything about the room radiated power. Including the man sitting behind the desk. Richard Montgomery looked exactly like the magazines described him. Confident. Composed. Intimidating. He looked up from a document. "Samantha Reyes." "Yes, sir." "Sit." She obeyed immediately. Richard studied her for a moment. The silence felt endless. Finally, he nodded. "I reviewed your application personally." Samantha blinked. Personally? "You did, sir?" "I did." Her heartbeat accelerated. Had she done something wrong? "You graduated with honors." "Yes, sir." "You worked two jobs while studying." "Yes." "You supported your family." "Yes, sir." Richard leaned back slightly. "Good." Samantha stared. Good? That was it? Good? "I value hardworking people," Richard continued. "This company rewards effort." Relief washed through her. Then Richard added: "I expect excellence." And just like that, the pressure returned. "I won't disappoint you, sir." "I hope not." His expression softened slightly. "Welcome to Montgomery Enterprises." Samantha smiled. "Thank you, sir." --- By the time work ended, Samantha felt like she had run a marathon. Her feet hurt. Her head hurt. Her entire body hurt. But she couldn't stop smiling. She had survived. Her first day. No disasters. Well... Except for the coffee incident. As she exited the building, the evening air greeted her. The city lights were beginning to glow. A satisfied sigh escaped her lips. "Long day?" The familiar voice made her jump. Samantha turned. And immediately recognized him. The coffee victim. The handsome stranger. He stood near the entrance with his hands in his pockets. Looking entirely too pleased with himself. "You again." "Me again." She laughed despite herself. "What are the chances?" "Higher than you think." Something about his answer felt suspicious. But before she could ask, he extended his hand. "We never properly introduced ourselves." Samantha shook it. His grip was warm. Steady. Unexpectedly gentle. "I'm Samantha." "I know." She frowned. "You know?" The stranger smiled. A mysterious smile. The kind that made her instantly curious. Then he finally said the words that changed everything. "My name is Ethan." He paused. "Ethan Montgomery." Samantha froze. Montgomery? As in— Her eyes widened. "Oh." Ethan looked amused. "Yeah." "The Montgomery?" "Unfortunately." "You are Richard Montgomery's son?" "Last time I checked." Samantha stared at him. The CEO's son. The heir to the entire company. The man she had accidentally spilled coffee on. Wonderful. Absolutely wonderful. Ethan laughed at her expression. And for some reason, Samantha couldn't help laughing too. Neither of them realized it then. Neither of them understood what that simple meeting would become. But years later, when everything had changed... When their lives had become hopelessly intertwined... Both of them would remember this moment. The first day. The first conversation. The first smile. The beginning of a story neither of them had planned. And perhaps... The beginning of a love neither of them could escape.
