Chapter 32: Max 12:19 A.M. Very few cars passed on Highway 20. Erie was fast asleep. I was pretty sure the bars were occupied with local drunks, but by two in the morning they would be empty; the last of the night people. I walked from shadow to shadow for a mile or more, closer to the lake. The moon was a beautiful crescent in the night’s sky. Blue-silver-white stars twinkled. The wind was warm and slightly humid, but I didn’t mind it at all. I was afraid of nothing and no one, but maybe I should have been. Demons who were much stronger than me were loose on the planet, all of which I believed in. Perhaps I too was a monster of the night, but I still should have been terrified of the others within my cult. I couldn’t possibly think I was the only murderer in the county or along the lak
