5 Don stood on the front steps frantically searching the shadows until he made out the faint outline of Kate sitting under the old apple tree. He jogged over and dropped onto the bench, taking her hands in his. He asked, “Kate, why did you run from me?” She glared at him. “How dare you let them ambush me?
