Chapter 4: Adjusting

517 Words
Three months passed, and by force, I stayed at the academy. I lived in the human dorm, which was on the opposite side of the campus. There were hunters and huntress in training that attended both dorms, making sure the balance between vamps and humans existed without death and murder. There were three rules to attend the school, the first was that humans were not allowed to interact with the vampires without hunter supervision. The second was that vampires could not feed on humans. The third was that vampires could not attend the human dorm, EVER!! Walking down the hallway back to my dorm room, my roommate, Hendrix, answered the door. To be honest, he was a dork. Glasses, shirt properly tucked in his pants, always studying and watching anime, the whole nine yards. He was a cool guy though. “Dawn, did you hear about the party Al was throwing?” he asked me as I entered the room. “No, I didn't,” I answered. “We should go,” He suggested. “Lisa is going to be there.” “Really?” I smirked looking back at him as I placed my backpack down in my room. “You should go without me; I have a lot of extra credit work I need to do.” The dorm rooms were all like two-bedroom apartments, with a kitchen and a bathroom to share. Hendrix stood at the end of the hallway that connected to the living room as he replied with, “I'll do your work for you buddy.” The desperation in his face only mirrored the desperation in his voice. These were the times it was hard to tell my friend no. I sighed. “Hendrix, we both agreed that you wouldn't do my work anymore. You don't have to cheat for me for us to hang out or be friends.” Hendrix wasn't used to having friends. To be honest, I was his first roommate that didn't bully him or treat him like toilet tissue. He had never even been kissed by a woman before, besides his mother. Like me, he lost his mother to a vampire as well. The only difference was that he watched the vamp drain his mother. However, the vamp didn't know his mother and father were hunters. His father killed the vampire and placed Hendrix in this academy in order to keep him safe from future vamps. “Tell you what, if you let me dress you, I’ll go with you to that party tonight.” The smile on his face couldn't be described by simple words. It was like he was a kid going to an amusement park. “You've got it buddy,” Hendrix said back, speeding into his room afterwards. Closing my room door, I got to studying. I was behind in math class, the worst of all classes. I had only three days to study and do all the extra credit work given to me. Eighteen pages of homework stood between me and a passing grade. But I brought this pain on myself.
