The Bargain
“You are going to marry Zeth Richason,” my father said.
His speech was entirely void of emotion, sounding like he was about to go through some other multibillion-dollar corporate deal instead of selling off his lone daughter. He didn't raise his gaze from his tablet.
I froze at the door to his study, and my breath was knocked out of my lungs. What was that she said?
Finally Deron Valter lifted his gaze. The hard-as-a-nail, ruthless tycoon who had started from scratch and created an empire from the ground up appeared tired, with lines creasing his forehead. The papers have already been prepared, Casel. The Valter estate will be bankrupt in seventy two hours, and our name will be smeared in mud, and I'll be facing prison time for fraud.
He rose, and moved over towards the large glass window that looked out on our extensive property. The only one who has the money to save us is Zethel Companies, but it's not our assets that Zeth Richason wants, it's you.
The words "No" escaped my lips, I took a step back and my hands trembled so much that I had to cling on to the edge of the mahogany desk to remain standing. No you can't, Papa, I love Nate! You know this! We have been together for 2 years.
“Nate is a boy who makes middle-level money,” my father snarled, and his anger ran high. “Zeth Richason is the head of the nation's biggest corporate empire and with a single stroke of his pen can wipe out our debt.”
I don't give a s**t about his money! He's cold, he's so arrogant and I don't even know him! I couldn't let the tears come down my eyes, they were burning.
I will know him," Deron said coldly and turned his back on me. Well, it's only three days until the wedding, we should all go to our room and start packing, you all are the Richasons now.
The term belong was like a punch in the face.
I didn't want to talk to anyone about it. I turned and ran back out of the study, my heels pounding up the marble stairs. The large chandelier above, a symbol of luxury and security, now looked like a glistening roof to a golden cage.
I closed the door of my bedroom and sat on the floor, down against the cool floor. My chest rose and rose with panic at my throat.
Three days. I couldn't stop shaking my hands, so I quickly dialed my cell phone to call the only help I've got for this nightmare. It rang once. Twice. Three times.
Hey baby, said his calm and soothing voice on the phone.
When he broke the dam, it was more than I could take. I sobbed, I could not help but sob. “Nate… Nate, I need to please you, I need to… my father… he wants me to marry Zeth Richason for some reason, he's trying to save the business, but I don't know what to do.”
The other side of the telephone line was as quiet as a library. The pause was so long that I began to think that the call was missing.
"Nate?" I said, 'Please,' and clutched the phone. "Are you there?"
Then, his voice finally could be heard but it was an unusual sound. Hesitant. Distant. That's...that's crazy, Casel. The Richasons? Are you sure?"
"Yes! My father just told me, the wedding is in 3 days! Nate, please tell me, we can run away. Tell me you have a plan. I need you.
There was another long pause in between us. I felt a bad stomach ache. I began to suspect, just a little, for the first time since I had ever met Nate. Why didn't he get angry? Why didn't he shout that that he would come and get me now?
Nate slowly breathed, "Okay, okay. Just... calm down, Casel. Let me think. We will work it out alright? Simply follow along for the time being.
"Play along?!" I replied, but didn't ask him any more questions before the phone rang again. I saw a call waiting notification pop up on my screen.
Unknown Number.
I put my eyes closed, and then I lowered my phone and hit answer, with my face frowning and my tears flowing. "Hello?"
I don't like when my future wife is crying about another man," a voice that was deep and velvety, spoke through the speaker. The voice was commanding and had an authority all of its own, sending an instant cold chill down my back.
My breath hitched. "Zeth..."
"Let's get one thing straight, Casel," Zeth Richason replied in an impossibly dark, possessive tone. For years you've been out of reach, but now? All your father gave you to me, you have three days to say good-bye, once you put this ring on your finger, you're mine.
