Best Mistake

"Ariah, here's your allowance" mom told me as she handed me the money. I counted the money in front of her and frown when I noticed that it was smaller than usual. "Mommy, as far as I can remember, I didn't broke any of your rules" I complained. "I lost a bet, I'll just doubled it next time" she said before going out of the house to go to her work. I just sighed and stared at the money. It's too small for the whole week. I don't even know if I can survive for three days with this money. But since I don't have any choice, I divided it by five and I felt more frustrated when I'm finally done. Guess I have to eat biscuit and water for the whole week to survive. I just set that aside, I'll just ask some foods on my best friend, I'm sure she'll give me. I went to the bathroom to take a bath. After that, I did my skincare and my everyday make up look. When I'm finally satisfied with my look, I checked my bag to see if I forgot some important things that I need today. When I'm finally done checking, I went outside and was ready to leave but stopped when I saw Akira-- my younger sister, eating. "Hey, did mom gave you your allowance?" I asked her nicely and she nodded "How much?" I know it's rude to ask that but I just want to confirm something. "She doubled it" she said with a wide smile. I felt a pang on my chest but still manage to smile because I don't want her to know that I'm hurt. It's not a big deal but I just can't help but feel envy. Ever since Akira was born, she became the favorite child, she became the best in mom's eyes. Mom will never get mad at Akira even if she broke our mom's rule. But when it was me who broke the rule, there's always a punishment. It's so unfair but I don't have any choice because I'm not the favorite. "How about you?" Akira asked. "Just the same" I said while showing my fake smile. I don't want to say that my allowance is lower than the usual, I don't want her to feel bad. Akira's forehead creased when she realized that my allowance was not doubled, "Do you want me to talk to mom?" I just pat her head and smile, "No worries, I can survive with my allowance" I checked my phone and was shocked when I saw that I'm almost late for class. "f**k, I need to go now. Make sure to lock the door and don't be late" I said and she just nodded at me. I grabbed my bag and went outside. I was busy searching for a public vehicle but nothing was coming. It'll take 10-15 minutes to arrive at the campus using a public vehicle and the class will start in 10 minutes. When I realized that no vehicle is coming, I started running. This will make my make up smudge and I'll look haggard but I have no other choice. The professor today is strict and he does not want a late student. He will mark you absent if you're 10 minutes late in his class. I felt my sweat coming out on my body but I just keep on running, I will be a dead meat if I'm late. While running, I felt my phone vibrating. I slowed down for a little to see who it was, I answered it when I saw that the caller is Krizha, my best friend. "Where the hell are you?" she asked in a very low voice. "I'm... I'm almost... almost there" I said while still running. "Are you running?" she asked again in a low voice. I got confused why is she whispering over the phone. "Yes, no vehi... vehicle" I said "Why are you... are you whispering?" I asked because it is so unlike her to lower her voice. Krizha has a very loud voice, I actually think that she has a microphone on her vocal chords because it's so loud whenever she is talking. "Mr. Johann is here and he said that he will check the attendance in 5 minutes" So, that was the reason why she's whispering. f**k, I'm really dead. Just why did he arrive earlier than usual?! I hung up the call and hold my phone tighter then ran so much faster than earlier. A minutes later, I finally arrived at the campus. And it seems like fate is playing me because the entrance has a long line! It seems like fate does not want me to attend my first class. I checked the time and my face immediately fell when I saw that I am already 15 minutes late. I tried to look around while waiting for my turn to tap id. Here in the university, you need to tap your id to make sure that you're a student here. I really like tapping id because whenever I do that, I feel like I'm a character to some famous teen series in Netflix. But now that I'm late, I'm starting to hate it. After a minute of looking around, I bit my lower lip out of nervousness when I did not saw any face of my classmates. It seems like I am the only one who is late. It feels like forever! But finally, after couple minutes of waiting, it is now my turn. I immediately tap my id when it was my turn. I was about to run again when I'm done tapping but someone called me. "Ms. Constantine" I faced the person who called me and was shocked when I saw who it was. "Good morning, Ms. Jaya" it's one of my professor last year. "Late? That's so unlike you ah" she asked while we were walking. I just smiled but I know that it looks so fake. I really want to run but I don't want to be rude so I just prayed silently. Please, make some miracle. I really need to go now. And it seems like my prayer was answered because Ms. Jaya bid a good bye, so I immediately run to my classroom. I fixed myself when I finally arrived. I checked the time and felt weak when I saw that I am 27 minutes late. Deep breath, Abi. Just say that you missed the public vehicle because you had a problem at home. I said to myself. I took a deep breath before opening the door of my classroom. "G-good morning, Mr. Jo-Johann. I'm sorry, I'm l--" I wasn't even done talking when the professor cut me off. "Wow, Ms. Constantine. Aren't you a little early for tomorrow's class?"
