Prologue
AURORA
I’m running.
I don't know where I'm coming from or where I'm heading to, all I know is I need to escape from this danger chasing me. I hear footsteps behind me, it's too close, coming after me like a predator about to devour its prey.
My lungs burn. I feel branches lash my face but the sound of those footsteps, swift but heavy, it won’t let me slow down or catch my breath.
The forest is dark and alive with shadows, trees blurring past in the moonlight, and I can’t tell where I’m going anymore. I just want to be far away from whatever is chasing me.
That's when I hear it, behind me: a growl. Its not human.
Panic surges all over, but I don't give in, there's no time to glance back.
Then, I trip.
The world flips and I crash hard into the snow. The impact knocks air out of my lungs. I try to crawl, but my body won’t move fast enough. That's when I hear it again: those footsteps, drawing closer and getting louder.
I reach out, panicking, searching for something, anything, finally my hand lands on something metal: a dagger and I grab it without thinking.
Suddenly, I hear the voice from the trees. It sounds cold, like it knows me, “You should've died years ago,” he says. I turn towards it and tighten my fingers around the dagger.
And then, a burst of blinding light flashes and everything disappears instantly. I wake up alone in the snow still clutching to the dagger in my hand.
I don’t know if it was real…
or just the beginning.
