Alice is walking home from school it's hot and she's sweaty. Alice makes it home to find her mother missing and unsure of how to find her drug-addict mom. Alice just pulls the change and couple dollars from her pocket to see if she even has enough for food. She has had to be an adult in her house and raising herself since she was 6 years old. She found a fast did job at fourteen that she works just to be able to feed herself and buy the necessities. Having to be strong and independent hasn't left much time for actually being a kid. Having to bounce from home to home and school to school. Not ever knowing her father and her mom being gone being a prostitute to support her drug habit hasn't made Alice's life very easy. Alice is in her last few weeks of high school and being able to graduate and then just move on with her life. As she gets to the front door she sees a note. Opening it, she finds out they are being evicted yet again. Finally, feeling completely defeated she opens the door and collapses on the floor and tears run down her face. How could she do this again? Feeling angry at her mom Alice starts throwing things and smashing the glasses on the floor and screaming until her voice is hoarse. Just turning 18 a month ago, Alice has been looking for a better job but with school she hasn't been able to find one with better pay. Picking herself up off the floor, she goes to her room to start packing. She doesn't have much but her backpack is big enough to hold her clothes and shower stuff. Now she is determined to just move on from life she is living. Her mom has never put her first, so she will leave tonight and, hopefully Jake her best friend, will let her crash with his family until she gets on her feet. Jake's parents welcomed me in as soon as they met me. We have been friends since I was eight. Just accepting that I was their bonus daughter and their gay son's best friend. Grabbing her phone she calls Jake, he picks up and she just starts crying. Jake already knows whatever is going on that it's is bad and just tells her to come on over. Alice grabs her bag looking around at the s**t hole apartment they had been living in. There were no beds or furniture just blankets on the floor and trash in the kitchen from the cheap take out Alice could barely afford. Wiping her tears Alice walks out and doesn't even look back. Walking over to Jake's, Alice allows herself a few more minutes to cry but she vows to herself this will be the last time she cries over her piss poor life. She was no longer going to be the daughter of a drug addict. She was a strong woman who has had to fight for everything in her life. She was going to make a better life for herself. She was no longer going to be just the daughter of a addict. She was going to be strong and work however hard to not have to worry about being evicted or where her next meal will come from. Knocking on Jake's front door she waits for him to open it. Jake opens the door and grabs Alice for a long hug. Alice starts to tear up but then she reminds herself of the vow she just made. Pulling back Jake looks at Alice and says " sweetie your always welcome here don't knock. Are you hungry? Mom is making dinner now and should be done soon." Alice follows Jake to his room and as they walk by the kitchen Alice tells Pam "Hey Pam. I'm not hungry." Pam tells Alice "ummm there will be dinner soon. There is plenty for dinner and even if there wasn't you would still be eating with us. Why don't you go and get cleaned up dinner should be ready in twenty minutes." Alice smiles "Thank you for always being there for me even though you don't have to." Alice really wants a shower but then she remembers she doesn't have any clean clothes. "Jake do you have anything I could wear? I don't have anything that is clean." Alice askes. Jake just points with his head and says, "Help yourself to whatever you need and I'll put your stuff in the laundry room." Jake has always just let me wear whatever I needed since I don't have a lot. After showering Pam calls for us to come down to eat dinner. We just talk about normal things like a normal family and graduation. After dinner Jake and I clean up the dishes and go up to his room. We talk about random things just trying to pass some time. I tell Jake "I'm going to sleep on the floor. Hopefully I can get some sleep since I don't need to worry about my mom or who she is bringing home." Jake tries to offer his bed to me but I decline. Telling him "This is where I normally sleep anyway so its no different." I lay back and just stare at the ceiling for a while. Trying to come up with a plan so I'm not a burden to Jake or his parents. Suddenly I dose off, its so peaceful and calm here. Waking up the next morning I see my clothes by my feet and inside I remind myself to thank Pam for washing my clothes. I wake up and go to the bathroom going through my normal morning routine. As I'm coming out of the bathroom Jake walks in yawning. I get ready and head down the kitchen to see if Pam is there so I can thank her and ask if she knows of any jobs available. I get to the kitchen and see Pam is making herself some coffee. I sit down and turn to her. "Pam thank you for doing my laundry I really appreciate it. Also do you know of any jobs hiring for after I graduate? I don't want to be a burden so I want to start looking now." Pam answers "Honey your not a burden. You can stay here as long as you like we don't mind. But you can use the computer after school and look online for job postings." I thank her again and grab a bowl for cereal and a coffee to drink. Jake comes down and asks if I'm ready so we can get to school early. I grab my bag and follow him out so we can start walking. After school I get on the computer and start looking for a job. I don't have a resume or anything so hopefully I can find a decent job with decent pay so I can start saving. There seems to be a lot of fast food jobs or waitressing that don't need experience so I apply. Then I see one for a housekeeper with room and board. That would be perfect so I wouldn't be a burden to Jake's family and I could save to move out on my own or maybe even college. I've never given college a thought because I knew I couldn't afford it. I apply and hope for the best. I close out of the computer and go up to talk with Jake. I find him just laying on his bed scrolling through his phone. He looks up and asks how my search went and I told him I applied to a few. The next two weeks go by with blur and we are getting ready for graduation. Pam took me to get a dress for the occasion saying you only graduate high school once. I feel terrible as they just keep taking care of me. Jake's parents tell me not to worry about it they don't mind at all. As we head to our seats I start to feel happy and excited. Getting this done with will start me on a good path to moving forward away from all the bad stuff that has happened in my life. We walk across the stage and get our diplomas and throw our hats in the air. After all the fun and excitement is done with we go out to dinner to celebrate. We talk about Jake heading off to fashion school in college and about my plans for the future. After we get home I check my email. I see one and get excited it is the housekeeping position. I read the email quickly and they have offered me the job and asked me to come and start monday. That gives me four days to tell Jake and his parents. But little did I know my life was about to change in a drastic way.
