Trisha POV
Why was this prick at it again!? I had just been minding my own business, walking down the hall with my 2 friends, Eric and Daisy, just after breakfast before school started. But then this perverted piece of work started to follow me. “Is he still there?” I ask Erik, who turns his head to look back.
Erik was one of my best friends from grade school. Although until recently, we had always attended separate schools. With his black hair, green eyes, broad shoulders, pale complexion, and muscles for miles, any normal girl would swoon at his feet. But me?
I could only ever see him as my friend-a brother at most. We met in the most un-extraordinary way. Just 2 kids who rammed into each other while playing tag on the local playground. Never seen each other before in our lives, but hit it off immediately regardless.
His gaze returned to me. “Yep, still there.” I rolled my eyes with a breath of exasperation. Daisy met my eyes, a smirk on her perfect pink lips. She had bright blond hair, a perfect figure, and piercing blue eyes. I always admired her beauty. Daisy was a fairly new friend. I had met her just over a month ago after being transferred to this school for “unruly behavior.”
Some asshole had been bullying her and I came to her aid because I knew no one else would. I hated bullies. I hated people-especially men- who thought they were entitled and irresistible. And to be frank, there were a lot of them in this school.
It didn’t help that the way this school was run was strange. Although it held the appearance of a typical high school, it was not run like one, but you had to attend it to know or see it. There seemed to be a single set of students whose families called the shots.
If you weren’t a member of those families, you were expected to obey them like royalty. Students would seemingly bow to them, and no one dared stand against them-except me, of course. Students also respected them and idolized them. It was as if they were compelled in a sort of hierarchy that I didn’t understand, and I didn’t want to try to understand it either.
Soon after noticing them, I began to nickname them Faction Leaders, because it obviously wasn’t a cult. There were 4 of them, and each Faction had at least 1 faction above them that they answered to, except the Top Faction, who seemed to answer to no one. At least, no one within this school. Sometimes in certain parts of town, I noticed similar behavior, but it was like everyone upon noticing me, changed their behavior rapidly. I tried not to think much of it. I figured maybe my reputation simply preceded me and they didn’t want to aggravate me.
I had been transferred to over 8 schools in the last 4 years. All because once entering high school, I no longer tolerated bullies or being talked down to, let alone controlled by, anyone. After being raised in an abusive home most of my life, I was finally removed and placed in state custody at 12 years old until I was 15. Then I was released and emancipated from my family. Now I am 17, and I turn 18 in October. It was currently March and the second semester had only just started.
“Your going to go at it again, aren’t you?” Daisy asks, and I roll my eyes. I knew exactly what she was implying. A month ago, the Factions suddenly succumbed to an unusual sickness that was all over the news. Every family member of the Factions got it and were all quarantined until death took each of them, one at a time. The sickness was sudden and lethal. According to the news, the sickness attacked organs until they shut down and caused them and arteries to burst, all while maintaining symptoms similar to the common flu or nothing-until it was too late.
Before that, I had always had some form of unwanted attention, whether it was jealous peers, persistent and unwanted admirers, or straight up bullies. They were always there. And I always put them in their place.
But after their sudden demise, almost immediately a new set of Factions took over, and with them, a new wave if bullies and some intense “admirers.” More numerous than before. By admirers, I mean s****l harassers.
And this prick who now followed me, was already starting the day off with stalking. I knew it would escalate to cat calling next if I didn’t do something. “Aw come on Trish, it’s just one date. I can show you a good time...maybe even smack that purty lil ass of yours until you beg me to stop…” I stopped, stiffening as I clenched my books in my arms until my knuckles turned white. Bile rose in my throat.
Erik and Daisy backed up, getting ready to watch. “Go get em, Trisha!” Daisy cheered quietly as I stopped and spun on my heel.
“Look here, Preston,” I snarled, holding a finger to his face, “It doesn’t matter how many times you ask, the answer is still NO! I am not interested in you at all. I’m never going to date you and find your behavior rather repulsive. So be a dear and SCREW OFF!!” My last words echoed across the hall, making several students jump, while others stared, and a couple hurried away.
I glowered at him and as I watched him, waiting for his response, his pupils dilated until they were black. I blinked. Was I seeing this right? The next thing I knew, with shocking speed, Preston grabbed me by the shoulders and slammed me into the lockers on one side of the hall.
His face was now inches from mine and what seemed like an animalistic growl emitted from his throat. “It’s hot to see you get so feisty,” he growled. Or maybe purred? I didn’t care what to call it, I just glared at him. He pulled up my leg so it was wrapped around his waist and groped my thigh, suddenly crashing his lips to mine.
My eyes widened. How dare he!? It took me a second to get over the shock, but then I narrowed my eyes. I bit down hard on his tongue that was now trying to force entry into my mouth. He yelled in shock and pain, his grip on me slackening. I shoved him off me, and dropped my school bag and books. I was shaking with anger. Impulsively, I cracked my knuckles.
“I told you to screw off, and instead you violate my body as if you own me!?” My fist made contact with his jaw, then my other grabbed him by the shirt collar as he fell backwards and threw him against the lockers. Nearby, Daisy snickered and Erik maneuvered to gather my dropped books and papers.
But I couldn’t stop. My rage, took over as flashes of my mother beating me, after I told her my uncle molested me, crossed my eyes. I was triggered. I punched him again and again, then kicked him in the gut and shoved him to the ground.
My shoulders heaved as I fought to calm myself and calm my haggard breathing. Finally able to stop my onslaught, I straightened my shirt and adjusted my pants so they both remained modest on my body.
I knew teachers would be rushing toward us soon with the commotion I caused, but I didn’t care. I kneed him in the face as my final assault, and he then crumpled to the ground, holding his freshly broken nose.
Satisfied, I grabbed my bag then knelt down next to him. “Don’t ever touch me again.” My words were dark and threatening. I then stood as finally a teacher was running to investigate the scene.
I knew I probably just earned a week’s worth of detention, but I didn’t care. After following me around like that the last 3 days, attempting to grope me and making lewd and inappropriate cat calls, then this stunt, the bastard deserved it. Detention would be worth it.
I rejoined Daisy and Erik and we walked down the hall to first period just as the first bell rang. Erik clapped me on the back with a laugh and handed me my books and papers. “Think he got the message this time, Trish?” he asked. Daisy responded for me, “Nah, he’ll probably be back for more once his nose straightens out. You got him good!” I smiled at their praises. I didn’t usually encourage violence, most of the time my bark was worse than my bite. But once you corner me, or assault me like that, then my bite becomes worse than my bark.
