Chapter One
Guilia Rossini walked freely into the grand front yard of her fiancé’s penthouse where she was greeted in low tones by the workers at the house. Observing the stiff greeting and the low whispers of the workers, she wondered why the ever friendly workers suddenly turned cold. She has been to the house countless times: she wasn’t a stranger here. Making her way to the stairs leading to Vincenzo De Luca’s room, a maid hurriedly walked to the edge to subtly block her way. “What is this? Why are you being weird? She queried the maid. “Master Vincenzo is resting, he doesn’t want any disturbance”, the maid replied not looking up. “Disturbance? Nonsense! Out of my way”, she walked past the maid and walked towards her fiancé’s room. When did a maid start blocking her way to her fiancé’s room? She marvelled. She heard a woman’s laughter echo through the walls of the hallway and froze. No way had that come from her fiancé’s room. As she walks closer to the door, she heard the woman’s voice clearly; soft and sonorous. Siena. Her best friend. She summoned the remaining courage she had as she pushed the door. The scene caused her legs to grow weak. Siena scarcely dressed lying on shamelessly on her fiancé. Her heart shattered like a brick against a glass. Giulia’s breath managed to flow back to her vocal cords as she tried to call her friend. “Siena?” Her voice shook, soft and shocked to her bones. “Don’t you know how to knock again, Giulia?” Vincenzo said without remorse, he sat up a little, his lips curved into a smirk. Siena, unmoved, locked her hands around Vincenzo. “It’s good you found out this early, either ways, you’d still have found out.” The air in the room suddenly became hot as she tried to figure out what was unfolding before her eyes; she clutched her purse to halt her shaky fingers. “My best friend and my fiancé?” Tears threatened her eyes, it felt as though her heart was ripped off her chest and crushed into a million pieces. "There's nothing new under the sun darling", Siena replied nonchalantly. Giulia shook her head in utter disbelief, scanning her best friend's face for any sign of remorse but found none, “I've been a fool all these years to believe that you always have my back” Siena looked aside unrepentantly. "Grow up, girl, true friendship is nothing but a mirage." Vincenzo who sat watching the two friends throw banter at each other interrupted. "Always the trusting fool, that's why I don't like you." He said without emotions. “But you said you loved me, Vincenzo, you assured me all the time." She said with a shaky voice. “Love you? Wake up from your sleep, darling. I definitely… used you.” Her heart broke into unredeemable pieces as every word dropped. He pulled out the bedside drawer and brought a check, scribbled something on it and tossed it to her like a nobody. “That’s a check of ten million dollars. Be smart and seize this opportunity. Many people don’t earn half of this for a lifetime.” “I don’t need your money, Vincenzo”, she retorted, shaking with hurt. “Oh, sweetheart, we both know you need that money. It will help you pay your mother's medical bills and keep your palms greased for a lifetime.” He boasted arrogantly. Siena giggled, causing her pain to hit deeply. “Anyway, you are invited for our engagement party. You know, to show there are no hard feelings.” Giulia clenched her fists but restrained herself. She was not worth the trouble. “You will regret this, I promise you” she said with a quiet strength, suppressing the volcano of emotions about to erupt in her. Then she turned and walked out briskly before they could see her tear up. ___ Hours later, Giulia sat at an enclosed corner of a dimly lit bar, her drink barely touched. Her phone buzzed relentlessly. News spread fast like wild fire these days. She stared into her sweat-beaded drink but her mind was far away. She pitied herself for falling for Vincenzo’s deceit. To think that they were actively planning their wedding, she has never felt this betrayed in her entire life. For the first in her life, she felt she could finally have someone so personal to her, little did she know that her joy will be short-lived. Her best friend’s betrayal was the height of it. “Bad day?” The voice jolted her out of her line of thoughts. Serena De Luca—Vincenzo’s cousin who Giulia had met in a family party had made herself comfortable opposite Giulia. Blond hair, pretty eyes, and an unsettling smile that screamed trouble. “Something like that,” Giulia mumbled. “I heard about what that fool did,” Serena said. “Vincenzo has always been a slippery guy but cheating with your best friend? That’s very degrading of him. Giulia forced a sad smile. “Why are you concerned about me by the way? Are you here to gloat?” she snapped. Serena offered a soft chuckle. “I’m not here to gloat, Giulia, I’m here to help you get the best revenge.” “What do you mean?” Giulia queried. “You want to make him pay? Make him swallow his pride and bow at your feet? Then, marry someone he fears.” Serena said. Giulia furrowed her eyebrows, trying to figure out what she meant. “I beg your pardon?” Serena’s mouth curved into a mischievous smile. “Fake a marriage. To someone bigger, wealthier and more ruthless than Vincenzo. And I’m willing to help you.” Giulia scoffed. “You’re joking.” “I’m dead serious,” Serena said, pulling out a document from her bag—the documents were marriage certificate already processed by her lawyer. “You are now Mrs. Dante De Luca, my brother’s wife.” Giulia’s stomach tightened. “Wait! You’re serious? The Dante De Luca? The choicest heir of the De Luca Group? He is invisible—he has no social media accounts, no pictures…” “Exactly” Serena interrupted proudly. “He is a mystery to many people and his life is so private. Perfect for a mysterious fairy-tale.” “Hmmmn,” Giulia eyed her suspiciously. “And what do you stand to gain from all of this?” Serena offered a dry smile. “Let’s just say I love seeing Karma take its full course.” Giulia glanced from Serena to the documents in her hands. Her name, boldly positioned beside Dante’s. The font bolder than the others. “I… I can’t do this,” she stammered. Serena shrugged nonchalantly. “Then endure Vincenzo and Siena’s mockery forever. Or show up as Mrs. De Luca at their engagement party tomorrow and enjoy the look of shock on their faces.” Giulia’s heart raced. Revenge. Respect. Power. And Control. She downed her drink as if matching the pace of her heartbeat. “Fine.” She replied. “Let’s do this.” Serena smirked. “That’s my girl.” ---- The private jet of Dante De Luca landed on the runway outside Naples. He stepped out of the jet in well-tailored navy blue suit. Tall, broad shoulders and chiselled jawline. His assistant steps in line next to him as he scrolls through his phone. “Sir,” Luca started discreetly, “I’m afraid there’s a situation.” “I’m all ears”, Dante replied without looking at him. “Your sister… she registered a marriage under your name.” Silence took over. The breeze rushed against their clothes. “She did what?” Luca shifted uneasily. “It is now known to the public that you are married to a woman named Giulia Rossini. All your business partners have been sending their congratulatory messages.” “Intriguing.” Dante mused. “Does father know about this?” “He’s aware”. Dante smirked. Father had threatened to choose his brother in his stead if he didn’t get married in a month’s time. And this arrangement, though without his consent, was just perfect. “Should I have it annulled right away? “No.” his face lit up. “Let’s enjoy this adventure.” --- In the room, Giulia stood before a mirror admiring herself in her luxury red dress, silver neckpiece. Everything on her cost a fortune. Serena had made preparations for the dress and Lamborghini waiting outside. Her phone buzzed. A message from Serena: “Get ready Mrs. Dante De Luca, it’s time to make your entrance.” Giulia heaved deeply, chins up, shoulders high, and stepped out. The venue of the engagement party was nothing short of exquisite. The hallway was decorated with lavender and purple flowers setting the tone as a royal event. Soft music was playing in the background setting a romantic mood. Minutes later, Giulia walked in, heads turn towards her. Cameras clicked excitedly. Shocked gasps echoed. Vincenzo turned to see what the fuss was about and couldn’t hide his shock but his face quickly curved into a smirk. “I know you can be a little desperate to seek attention but I didn’t realize you’re this desperate, Giulia.” She looked at her ex-fiance with deep hurt but quickly pushed it aside with a confident smile. “You seem to be the only one who hasn’t heard the news.” “What news?” Vincenzo asked dryly. “The name is Mrs. De Luca now.” Giulia said proudly. A rushed murmur filled the room. De Luca? Did she mean The real Dante De Luca? The most powerful and ruthless of the De Luca Group? Colour drained from Siena’s face. “You lying i***t! Don’t you have some shame? Siena spat disgusted. Giulia kept her cool as she brought out the marriage certificate. “Here’s my proof.” “You worthless trash, it's obvious you were cheating on me before…” Vincenzo spat. "You were only looking for an opportunity to be open with your secret lover." Dante walked into the hall, a black suit, tall and painstakingly handsome. The hall stood still as if star-struck. Dante strode with an aura of authority that seized the breath of many ladies. He stopped at the middle where Giulia and Vincenzo were standing. “Bro, I'm aware you don't know Giulia is my wife, but let this be the last time you address my wife in this manner!” Dante warned sternly. Everyone including Giulia froze. His gaze locked on Vincenzo. Serena who was standing at the entrance blinked hard in shock. Nobody expected him to show up here. Vincenzo staggered a bit. “D-Dante…? “From now on, you would treated my wife with utmost respect and never at any time ever call her by her name or any other name. " He warned sternly. "Understood". Vincenzo nodded. “Good!” Dante turned to Giulia. “Are you okay, Mrs. Dante De Luca?” Giulia nodded still in shock. “Great, now that everyone has confirmed that I’m married to this beautiful woman, kindly excuse us.” With that, he took Giulia by hand and walked out of the hall. Immediately they were alone, he released her hand and turned to her. “You have five seconds to explain what happened in there” “I…I had to cover up for you as your wife since you weren’t available to attend the party.” Giulia said, her heart pounding fast. “Hmmm, as my wife?” Dante mouth curved into a mischievous smile. “Let’s see how well you play the role." He smirked.
