The Signature That Started a War

795 Words
The pen felt heavy in Elena’s hand. She stared at the blank line waiting for her signature. Just one name. One decision. And her entire life would change. Her heart beat loudly in her ears. “This is insane,” she murmured. Adrian leaned against the desk, watching her carefully. “You’ve said that three times already.” “That’s because it’s still true.” She looked up at him. “You’re asking me to trust someone I barely know.” Adrian’s expression didn’t change. “I’m asking you to make a business decision.” “This isn’t business,” she said quietly. “It’s marriage.” The word hung in the air between them. Adrian crossed his arms. “Marriage is often a business arrangement.” Elena shook her head. “Not where I come from.” “Then maybe it’s time to come from somewhere else.” His confidence frustrated her. “You talk like you already know what I’m going to do.” Adrian tilted his head slightly. “I have a good idea.” “And what is that?” “That you’re tired of being underestimated.” The words hit closer to the truth than she liked. Elena looked down again at the contract. “You said you’ve been watching me.” “Yes.” “Why?” Adrian hesitated for the first time. Then he spoke quietly. “Because I needed someone strong.” Elena frowned. “There are millions of strong women in this city.” “But not like you.” The sincerity in his voice surprised her. “What does that mean?” Adrian walked slowly toward the window again. “The people around me live in a world of power and manipulation.” His voice grew quieter. “They lie easily.” “They betray each other without hesitation.” He turned back toward her. “You don’t belong to that world.” Elena crossed her arms. “So you’re dragging me into it?” “Temporarily.” She sighed. “That’s not reassuring.” Adrian stepped closer again. “But you’re still considering it.” Elena didn’t answer. Because he was right. Despite all the risks, part of her was tempted. The contract represented freedom. A chance to start over. And maybe… Just maybe… A chance to prove everyone wrong. She thought about Daniel again. About the way he looked at her like she was nothing. Her grip on the pen tightened. Adrian noticed the shift in her expression. “You’re angry.” “Wouldn’t you be?” “Yes.” “So maybe I do want revenge.” Their eyes locked. “Then sign it,” Adrian said quietly. Elena hesitated. “You’re very confident.” “I usually am.” “What if I say no?” Adrian shrugged slightly. “Then you walk out of this building and continue your life.” “And you?” “I find someone else.” For some reason, that idea irritated her. She didn’t understand why. Maybe it was his calm certainty. Or maybe it was the strange feeling that this moment mattered more than she realized. Elena finally lowered the pen. Slowly… Carefully… She signed her name. The ink dried on the paper like a final decision. Adrian picked up the contract and examined it. A small smile appeared on his face. “Good.” Elena exhaled nervously. “So what happens now?” Adrian opened a drawer and placed the contract inside. “You move into my house.” “What?” “You’ll need a wardrobe suitable for public events.” “This is happening very fast.” “Yes.” Elena rubbed her forehead. “I think I just made the craziest decision of my life.” Adrian’s phone suddenly rang. He answered briefly. His expression turned cold. When he hung up, he looked back at her. “Interesting.” Elena frowned. “What?” Adrian grabbed his coat. “Your ex-boyfriend is downstairs.” Her eyes widened. “What?” “He’s asking about you.” Her heart began pounding again. “What does he want?” Adrian walked toward the door. “Apparently he regrets his decision.” Elena felt anger rise inside her chest. Too late. Adrian stopped beside her. “Perfect timing.” “Why?” He extended his hand toward her. “Because now you can introduce him to your husband.” Elena stared at Adrian’s outstretched hand. Her pulse raced. “You’re serious.” Adrian’s eyes glinted with quiet confidence. “Completely.” Then he added calmly, “Let’s go downstairs.” And Elena suddenly realized something terrifying. Signing that contract hadn’t just changed her life. It had just started a very dangerous game.
