Chapter One: He came for the child I had from a one-night stand.
The knock came at 11:47 p.m. Mia knew because she’d been watching the red numbers on her alarm clock blink. Same time every night. Her brain wouldn’t quit. Rent was due Friday. Liam needed new shoes — the 5,000 naira ones from Balogun were already splitting at the toe from playground wars. And that clinic bill from October kept showing up in her mailbox every two weeks. Like it was hoping she’d forget. She hadn’t slept right in days. Her body felt heavy, but her head was loud. She’d tried counting cracks in the ceiling. Making a grocery list she could stretch to payday. Imagining a beach. Nothing stuck. The worry always won. Three knocks. Slow. Steady. Like whoever it was knew she was home and wasn’t going anywhere. Mia sat up fast. Her chest felt tight. Mrs. Danvers downstairs always knocked like she was apologizing. Jade texted first. This wasn’t either of them. She slid off the bed. The floor was cold. She grabbed the faded gray hoodie off her chair. It smelled like detergent and Liam’s apple juice from breakfast. She went down the short hall and stopped at Liam’s door. It was cracked open the way he liked, with the little nightlight making a line on the floor. She could hear him breathing. Whatever this was, it wasn’t getting near him. She pressed her eye to the peephole. Metal was cold. Leo Blackwell stood in the hallway light. On a normal day he wouldn’t be in this building in Surulere with the peeling paint and the bulb that flickered every 10 seconds. Dark wool coat. Collar open like he’d ripped his tie off hours ago. Hair messy over his forehead. Probably cost more than her monthly food budget. He looked tired. Shadows under his eyes. But it was still him. The man who could mess up everything just by showing up. Her stomach dropped. She’d known this was coming. From the gala months ago. She’d seen him across the room, and he’d seen Liam. His eyes stayed too long. Something in his face shifted. She grabbed Liam’s hand and left before he could get close. She’d been careful since. Looking over her shoulder. Hoping she imagined it. She didn’t. She didn’t want to open the door. She wanted to turn off the light and pretend. But her hand was already on the deadbolt. Running forever wasn’t real, so she opened it. Leo’s eyes found hers right away. Same eyes. Like he could see through every wall she’d built since that one stupid night. "I’m here for my son." No hello. No sorry it’s late. Just that. Like he was talking about traffic. Mia gripped the door. Her knuckles went white. "Liam’s asleep." "I know." "You can’t just show up at midnight. This isn’t how it works." "I’ve been looking for you for months, Mia. I’m done looking." "I needed time to think." Her voice cracked. "You’ve had five years." She had nothing to say to that. He was right, and it hurt. He looked past her down the hall, toward the light from Liam’s room. For a second he looked less like the man from the news. Just nervous. Like a regular man. "I’m not here to fight. Not tonight. But I’m done waiting outside." Before she could answer, he stepped in. She moved to block him, but it didn’t matter. Then a small voice behind her. "Mom...?" Both of them froze. Liam stood in his doorway, rubbing one eye. His dinosaur pajamas were twisted. One sock on. Hair everywhere. He looked at the tall man, then at her. "Who’s that?" Still half asleep. Mia’s mind went blank. She wanted to scoop him up and shut the door. But Leo was already moving. He crouched down slowly so he was eye level with Liam. "Hey, buddy. I’m someone who knows your mom." His voice was soft and shaky at the end. Liam stared. "You’re really tall. Taller than the uncle who fixes the elevator." Leo made a sound. Almost a laugh, but rough. "Yeah. I hear that a lot." "What’s your name?" "Leo." Liam thought about it and nodded. "Do you know my daddy?" No one said anything. Leo swallowed. His eyes looked wet in the dim light. "Not really, kid. Not for a long time." Liam took one small step closer, even with Mia’s hand on his shoulder. "You look sad. Are you okay?" He looked between them. "My fish is called Leo. He’s orange." Leo blinked. The corner of his mouth twitched. "Yeah?" Liam yawned, eyes heavy. "Are you staying?" Leo looked up at Mia over Liam’s head. Liam touched the sleeve of Leo’s coat with his small hand. "You can stay if you want. Mom makes good hot chocolate when people are sad." Leo stood up slowly. He didn’t look at Mia yet. He looked at Liam. "Goodnight, buddy." Then he turned to Mia. His voice dropped. "I’ll be back in the morning." He walked out. The door clicked, and Mia was still holding it. She picked Liam up, held him tight, and carried him back to bed.
