Chapter Two`

"You don’t need to do this," I begged. The anguish etched on his face was a haunting reflection of the pain we both shared. It broke me all over again. I didn't think I could be more broken than I already am. Marco had been torn from our lives over his stupid choice, but I couldn’t help but feel guilty. My heart wrenched as Mauro's index finger curled around the trigger, his eyes glazed with a grief so intense that it seemed to have drowned him. His other hand clutched a photo of the three of us the day Marco was born. "I love you," he whispers, "I will always love you both!" "I love you, Maria and Marco, more than words can express." "I can’t live my life without either of you." his voice filled with loss and longing. As the thunder cracked in the distance, I could feel it, but I couldn’t stop it. No reasoning, no lying could get us out of this mess. Our story started as a tragedy. We lived through darkness and there must be an ending to our shared madness. We survived so much, but we couldn’t survive this. There are some things love can't fix. The air was thick with suffering, heavy with the weight of unspoken words, it was like a noose tightening around us. My eyes, once sparkling with the joy of motherhood, were now a storm of pain, anger and regret. My husband, once feared and admired in the underworld as a mafia lord, hung his head in a silent confession of his sins. Maurilio pressed the barrel of the gun firmly against his temple, his hand trembling. The moment stretched on, a silent scream frozen in time, as I pleaded to God to stop the inevitable. I looked up to the sky, my voice shaky. "Please Maurilio! You can’t do this!" "You can't f*****g do this to me after everything you’ve done!" I screamed. The rainfall mixed with his sobs. "I can’t do this, Maria! I killed him! I should have been watching him! I should’ve protected him!" "No! You didn’t kill him. It was an accident, Mauro. A terrible, tragic accident." "You’re not to blame for what happened," I muttered, trying to do and say anything to shield my heart. "But I was supposed to protect him!" "I was always supposed to protect you both, and I f*****g failed!" his voice laced with anger, "You can still protect me, you can still live for Marco. That’s what he would’ve wanted!" "You need to fight for him!" he sinks to his knees, gripping his hair. "I’m a f*****g monster." "I can’t live with this guilt!" He whispered a final apology, but I was paralyzed, as the deafening crack of the gunshot resonated through the dark, secluded hillside villa. Love is tough, but loneliness is twice as hard. My lifeless husband crumpled to the ground, a crimson tide combined with the rain, painting a gruesome display of his regret and misery. All I could do was rush to his side whilst screaming for help, but it was too late; the damage was done, and my world had permanently altered. "Why!" "You did you have to do this!" I shrieked. My mind struggled to comprehend his decision. With a desperate plea to the heavens, I collapsed beside him, my sobs lost in the storm. Elena pried my hands from his still warm but lifeless body. "Maria, you have to get up." "The ambulance will be here shortly," she softly whispered. I shook my head, "They can't save him!" I bitterly choked. "I understand you are hurting, but it will all be okay, I promise you. It's hard to see it now, but you can't stay here and by being here it won’t change what’s happened." "You need to think of your own life." "It’s dangerous, and... and the rain…" but before she continued, I bitterly laughed. "My life? What f*****g life, Elena?" "He took the f*****g cowards way out Elena. He took my son from me, and now he’s taken himself. I don’t have a f*****g life, but I’ll show you f*****g dangerous!" The sirens grew louder, a harsh symphony of despair that pierced through the rain. Elena knelt beside me, her voice almost desperate as she rubbed my back, "You have a life, a life to honor your son and his memory, not to let him drown again." I glared at her. "I wasn’t the one who let him drown, the man I f*****g loved did, and then he killed himself out of guilt!" "How can I honor my son when half of him is the monster he f*****g called dad!" I wailed. "I know it feels like betrayal, but you have to remember—he was struggling." "He wasn’t himself, not after... after everything," Elena sternly said. "Struggling? He had a f*****g choice. He could’ve been a man and fought his demons, fought for us, fought for our f*****g family we created. Instead, he chose to climb into bed with a slut and took the cowards way out as he couldn’t face his mistakes yet a f*****g again!" "Maria, he was lost, he didn’t know how to cope." "He was a lost soul", she glanced at him and then back at me before sighing. "And you think I know how too? All I picture is him with her, yet I still f*****g love him, I still want him back..." I breathed "… I want my son back." "I’d do anything to hear his voice again, to hold him, to see him smile, just to f*****g feel him." "My heart has been ripped from my body, and I’m the one left to pick up the pieces, to live with this agony." "You’re right. You have every right to be angry, to feel betrayed. But don’t let that anger consume you. You need to think clearly. Marco wouldn’t want you to be like this. Let’s head inside, the paramedics are arriving, and they have a job to do." A smile crept on my lips, a fierce determination began to rise within "That’s true, he wouldn’t want me to be like this" as I slowly removed my shaking hands from Maurilio. As the whirlwind of chaos, flashing lights and first responders rushed over, I reached for his gun and vowed to myself to rise from the ashes and reclaim my son's legacy. I vowed to the heavens I would return to the mafia world as the most feared powerful force to shake the foundations and reclaim what was rightfully mine, my sinful husband's throne built on pain and misery now stained with blood and tears. Slowly, I retreated back to our house. I stood and watched them take his body, but I was no longer afraid of drowning. I craved the storm.
