Chapter 7

Xander (POV) My wolf was able to give Link, Santiago and Issac time to heal, and now they were joining the fight. I looked around, realizing over half their men were dead. "We need some of them alive." I mind linked. "Tell that to your wolf. He's the one ripping everything apart," Link laughed. I didn't answer because he was right. I needed to rein my wolf in before he killed them all. I focused on my wolf, trying to calm him down. "We need survivors. Take a step back and watch. Let the others take over. They are better at capturing than we are," I told him. He let out a growl letting me know he was not happy about stepping out of the fight. "I know your mad and I would never ask you to step out if it was not important. We need to find out who is behind the attacks." "I know!" He growled back at me. He was trying to calm himself down. Stepping out of the fight was not easy for him. We stood off to the side watching our men ready to jump in if they needed help. Link was facing off against three vampires at once. My wolf was watching intently pacing back and forth. Link seemed to have the situation under control, but it would only take one quick move to put the vampires at the advantage. "Just kill them." I mind-link to Link. "I think the one in blue is their leader. I'm trying to keep him alive." He mind-linked back to me. "I'll kill the others so you focus on capturing him then," I said as I ran over to where they were fighting. I leaped towards the taller vampire first. He was the better fighter of the three. I wasted no time ripping him apart. I was about to leap onto the other vampire when a sharp prick hit my back. I fell to the ground mid-jump. My wolf roared in pain and shifted, leaving me lying on the ground naked in my human form. The pain was making it hard to move. I don't know how long I laid there. But eventually, Link was next to me in his human form. "Stay still, I have to get it out," he said, putting both his hands on my back. "What is it?" I grunted out. "Wolfsbane." "Shit." I hissed. "It's out, you have to get out of here. We can handle it from here," he said, pushing me to my feet. I was still off balance and in pain, but Link was right. I had to get out of here. I needed to be treated for the wolfsbane. If not, it could kill my wolf. I could already feel him getting weaker. I needed to get out of here. I couldn't fight with the wolfsbane running through me. I would put them all in danger if I stayed. They would try to protect me and put themselves in danger. I needed to get out of here. I took off running. I don't know how long I ran for but the weather had changed. It was wet and foggy. I knew I should be close to home. I just needed to go a little bit longer and my wolf could get healed. I was feeling weak and needed to rest. I could feel the wolfsbane spreading. My wolf was hurting and on edge. "Let me take control. Something feels off." "You're just on edge because you're hurt," I told him. Just as I was about to tell him we were almost home, I heard what sounded like a stick being snapped not far from where I was. Maybe my wolf was right. "I told you. Someone is near." "Even if someone is near, you are not strong enough to fight," I said, getting to my feet. I needed to get home. I had started walking towards our pack again when they attacked. My wolf took over and tried to fight them off, but the wolfsbane was spreading, and he was growing weak. We needed to get out of here. My wolf took off running as fast as he could. That's when I smelled her. My mate was close. Her smell was making my wolf wild and the vampires were right on our trail. My wolf was not paying attention to where we were going. He was worried about our mate being close by with the vampires being so close. That's when I saw the headlights coming right at us. My wolf tried to move out of the way, but it was too late. The driver had already swerved and was crashing into a nearby tree. My wolf ran over to the car to check on the driver and that's when we saw her. Our mate. She was beautiful and covered in blood. She was hurt badly. We needed to get her help now! The vampires were closing in, so my wolf wouldn't shift. We need to get these vampires away from our mate. "Xander, get home. We will take care of this," my brother Teddy said, coming up beside me with my other brother Chunk. "She is my mate." I mind-linked to both of them. They looked at each other, then looked at the girl bleeding in the car. "Call an ambulance. She needs help," Teddy told Chunk. "Don't worry about her, we will get her help. She will be fine," Teddy told me. "Get home, so your wolf can be healed." My wolf shook his head no, just as another piercing pain hit my back. My wolf let out a growl and shifted back. There I was again, lying naked on the ground, unable to move. This had never happened to me before, and now it was twice in one day. "s**t!" Teddy cursed as he pulled the dart out of my back. "We will take care of the vampires and your mate. We got back up on the way. You need to get home. You need to get the wolfsbane out of your system before it can do any damage to your wolf. Now Go!" Chunk yelled at me right before he shifted into his wolf. I didn't want to leave my mate, but I was no good to her like this. I could barely stand up. The wolfsbane was spreading faster, and I could feel my wolf growing weaker by the second. I needed to get to the pack doctor. Everything was fading and spinning. The last thing I remember was hitting the ground just as the ambulance was pulling onto the scene. Then everything went black. I woke up three weeks later in the pack hospital. I found out later that my brothers and our warriors handled the vampires. We were still holding over a dozen of them in the dungeons for questioning. My mate was rushed to the nearest hospital. Her condition was pretty bad. They had to fly her to a different hospital to be treated and, because we were not family, the hospital would not release any information. They would not even tell me if she was still a patient there. I didn't even know her name or any other information about her. All I knew was that she was my mate and in a car accident. The sight of her bloody and ripped apart in her car has haunted my dreams for the last six years. That is the only image I have of my mate. Her smell stays in my head, reminding me that she is out there somewhere.
