Chapter 1
In the luxurious hall, diamond chandeliers cast a dazzling glow, illuminating the walls adorned with ceremonial decorations, pricey artwork and portraits of Jack Brown, the billionaire Chairman of Hybrid holdings and father-in-law to Richard Hunt. Richard donned a sleek gray suit, sat beside his newly wed wife, Sophia Brown, daughter of Jack Brown amidst her family in a well crafted dinner table and chairs positioned away from other guests tables. As an orphan, Richard's only companions were colleagues and employees tucked discreetly in a corner. Sophia's bridal gown, embellished with diamond lace, accentuated her curves, while a bold thigh slit revealed a striking red sunflower tattoo. As Jack Brown excused himself and departed with his daughter Lisa, Sophia's younger sister, to greet incoming guests, Richard couldn't help but notice a subtle unease in Sophia's demeanor. "What do you make of all this?" Richard asked, his voice raised slightly to be heard over the bustling noise of the hall surrounding them. “It doesn't matter what I think, I just want to do what I have to do”.Sophia replied grudgingly, adjusting her diamond earrings "If you're feeling uneasy about this, perhaps it's best to confide in your father," he suggested calmly, his gaze unwavering as he locked eyes with her, his expression serious yet understanding. “Is this an interrogation, or do you take me for one of your staff?" she retorted, her tone tinged with a hint of sarcasm and frustration. “I wouldn't be here if my dad wasn't so stubborn.” "I'm married to a man who relies on my father's house for our wedding reception," she stated, her tone tinged with a sense of disillusionment and disappointment, accompanied by a subtle shake of her head. At that moment, Sophia found herself unable to endure being near Richard. Her mind wandered to visions of basking on a Caribbean beach or sipping champagne aboard her father's private jet or clubbing all night with her friends. That's the life she was used to, not this, she knew that fulfilling her promise to her father was paramount, even if it meant suppressing her own desires. “I need to step out for a moment. And please, don't follow me," she said hastily, her tone betraying a sense of urgency as she tiptoed awkwardly, attempting to avoid the curious gazes of the guests before making a beeline for the back exit. Richard found the situation surreal. Here he was, at his own wedding reception, feeling drained and weary. He had no feelings for Sophia, he entered into this marriage primarily due to her father's plea, hoping it would help secure lucrative deals for his growing company. But for how long was he going to keep up with this sham called marriage ? With a gentle nod, Richard arose from his seat, excusing himself to fetch a glass of wine from the neatly dressed waiter standing beside a large flower vase across the hall. “Mr Richard.” “Groom of the day”. A gentle , yet unmistakable familiar soprano voice echoed from the left side of the hall, cutting through the joyful clamor of the celebration. Richard's heart quickened as he recognized the voice; it was Mariam, Richard's closest friend turned secretary. With a mix of surprise and anticipation, Richard whispered under his breath, "That's Mariam," his eyes swiftly scanning the hall in search of her familiar figure. A tall, dark looking figure makes her way through the populated hall, walking towards Richard looking so excited as she meets up with him halfway through the hall “You didn't have to cause a scene.” Richard said to her, smiling awkwardly, reaching out for a warm embrace “Apologies, I just couldn't resist stealing the spotlight," chuckled Mariam. Her eyes filled with admiration as she took in Richard's impeccable attire. Mariam Potter had been Richard's neighbor and closest friend since childhood, even before he tragically lost his parents at the age of eight. Richard moved in with Mariam's parents and spent most of his formative years in their home until he secured a job and eventually moved out to start his own company. After Mariam graduated, Richard hired her as his secretary, a role she still held. Their bond remained strong from their shared childhood experiences to their professional collaboration. "So, I noticed your wife just slipped out of the hall. Everything alright?" Mariam asked worriedly "Oh, nothing to worry about, just a quick call she needed to make." “Where are the rest of our guests?”. Richard inquired hastily, as he sought to deflect further enquiries regarding Sophia "They're well taken care of," Mariam reassured, gesturing towards the corner of the hall where his office staff were seated, a sense of confidence and trust evident in her tone and gesture. As Richard and Mariam conversed, their discussion was interrupted by the arrival of Sophia's father, accompanied by his younger daughter, Lisa. Lisa, a stark contrast to Sophia in appearance, with her black hair, chubby frame. Wore a simple handmade gown that accentuated her radiant smile. Hand in hand with her father, they approached with concern etched on their faces, their voices tinged with a blend of curiosity and worry as they inquired about Sophia's whereabouts. With a gentle smile, Jack spoke up first, concern lining his features. "Richard, have you seen Sophia? She's not picking up her calls”. Richard's brow furrowed slightly, mirroring his internal turmoil. "I haven't seen her recently," he admitted, his voice tinged with a mixture of worry and resignation. "She mentioned stepping out for a moment." Sophia's sister nodded understandingly, her grip tightening on their father's hand. "I hope she's alright," she murmured softly, her gaze flickering between Richard and her father. Jack placed a comforting hand on his daughter's shoulder, offering a reassuring smile. "Let's not worry just yet. She's probably just taking a breather," he suggested optimistically, though his eyes betrayed a hint of concern. "The time has come for the newlyweds to cut their cake!" announced the master of ceremonies loudly over the microphone. Mariam, Richard, Lisa, and Jack Brown all looked up in surprise and a hint of panic. "Richard, go find your wife. Duty calls," urged Jack Brown, his tone a mix of authority and concern. "I'll come with you," offered Mariam Jack and Lisa returned to their table, their expressions reflecting a mix of apprehension and curiosity as they watched Richard and Mariam navigate the bustling hall to locate Sophia. They hurriedly exited through the back door in search of Sophia, passing by cars and security details as they made their way towards the large swimming pool just beyond the mansion gates. Despite scanning every corner and searching diligently, Sophia was nowhere to be found. Frustration and worry etched onto his face, Richard reached for his phone and attempted to call her. "Damn it," he muttered to Mariam, his disappointment evident in his voice as Sophia's phone continued to ring unanswered. A few minutes later, Richard felt his phone vibrate, signaling a new message. His heart skipped a beat as he read Sophia's text: “I thought I told you not to come looking for me”. He quickly takes a quick glance around the compound one more time and there she was seated on a swing under an oak tree taking her cigarette. Both looked in amazement. They both walked up to her in speed “Why aren't you answering your phone calls?” Richard asked “Everyone is sick worried about you, and we're needed in the hall” “Who's we” she replied sizing Mariam from head to toe in a rude manner “Never mind," Sophia replied curtly before heading directly toward the hall, leaving Richard and Mariam trailing behind her as they followed in the same direction. Richard exchanged frustrated yet determined glances with Mariam, silently conveying their shared resolve to continue with the wedding reception despite the unsettling encounter with Sophia. With renewed determination, Richard quickened his pace to catch up with Sophia, Mariam following closely behind. They pressed forward, their expressions reflecting a mixture of concern and determination to address the situation and ensure the event proceeded smoothly.
