The. Answer. she swallowed
Day 90 Emma Whit more knew the answer. She knew it the moment the client finished speaking. Her hand lifted an inch off the boardroom table, then stopped in mid-air, as if someone had tied a string to her wrist. “Does anyone see a problem with the flood zone?” asked Mr. Grant from Crane Holdings, tapping his silver pen. Twelve people stared at their laptops. Emma’s throat closed like a fist. The Harbor Pier redevelopment was the biggest project Harlow & Vance had won in ten years. On page forty, the flood zone was marked wrong. She had found the mistake at midnight, alone at her kitchen table, and written the correction in her notebook. She had even practiced the sentence in the mirror. Section three uses an outdated flood map. Eight words. She could not say them. “I think it’s fine,” said Gareth from planning, leaning back with a smile. “We reviewed it thoroughly. ”He had not reviewed it at all. Emma knew it, and he knew she knew, and still she lowered her hand and wrote at the bottom of the page: I said nothing again. A yellow sticky note slid across the table. It came from Max Turner, the one colleague who ever noticed her. It read: Your face says you know something. Your mouth says you’re a mime. She pressed her lips together to hold back a laugh. Max winked. Mr. Grant closed his folder. “Good. Then we proceed. And Ms. Whit more? ”Emma froze. “Yes? ”“Mr. Crane specifically asked for you on this team. He said he knew your family.” He smiled politely. “Small world. ”The room seemed to tilt. Emma had never met Victor Crane in her life. * * * At lunch, Lily Hart from the design team dropped a slice of chocolate cake on Emma’s desk. “Eat. You look haunted. ”“Only by my own cowardice. ”“Then eat more cake. Cowardice hates sugar. ”Emma laughed. Lily was twenty-five, fearless in red lipstick, and the first person at Harlow & Vance who had ever said, “You’re funnier than you let people see. ” She always made the world lighter. “Walk into that boardroom like you own it,” Lily said. “Chin up. Ignore Gareth.”“Gareth would notice if I ignored him.”“Gareth notices nothing. He is a man-shaped cushion.”Emma snorted cake into her napkin, and for a few minutes she almost forgot the flood zone .* * * That evening, she drove through the rain to her parents’ house for Sunday dinner. The Whit more home still looked magnificent, with its tall windows, wide staircase and hall lights glowing like a promise. But the dining room had changed. Her father, Richard, once loud enough to shake the walls, now ate slowly, like a man counting each bite. Her mother, Claire, kept glancing at the window. Her older sister, Olivia, drank her wine too fast. “You’re quiet,” Olivia murmured. “I’m always quiet. ”“Not like this. ”Before Emma could answer, their mother put down her fork. “Daniel called,” Claire said. Emma’s fork clattered against her plate. “He’s coming home. For a while.” Her mother watched her carefully. “Perhaps next week. ”Daniel. Five years. The boy her family had raised beside them after his own family fell apart. Everyone called him her cousin. He was not related to her at all.Emma remembered the last time she had seen him. Rain on the garden path. His hand against her cheek. Her heart in her mouth. Then he had stepped back and said, I can’t stay. “That’s nice, ” she said, too high. Olivia raised one eyebrow. Emma changed the subject before her sister could say a word. “Harlow & Vance won the Harbor Pier bid, actually. I’m on the team.”Her father’s glass slipped from his hand and shattered on the floor.Nobody moved.“Excuse me,” Richard said quietly, and left the room. * * * Later, Emma stood in the hall with a broom, staring at the study door. Voices drifted through the wood. “Nobody outside this house can know yet. Nobody, Claire. ”“Then when exactly are you planning to tell your daughters? ”“When I’ve fixed it. ”“You have ninety days, Richard. That is all the bank has given you. ”Ninety days until what? Emma backed away, gripping the broom. Her phone buzzed in her pocket. An unknown number. One line.I know. She stared at it, her pulse thudding in her ears. She turned toward the front window, and there, at the end of the lane, sat a grey car with its lights off Waiting.
