Lena’s unease followed her all the way back down the corridor.
The feeling of being watched refused to leave her, clinging to her skin like a shadow she couldn’t shake. She didn’t look back again. She was afraid of what she might see if she did.
When she reached her room, her hands trembled as she unlocked the door and slipped inside, locking it immediately behind her.
She leaned against the door, pressing her palm flat against her chest as her heartbeat thundered wildly. "I’m safe", she told herself.
At least for now.
She crossed the room slowly, onto the edge of the bed, and stared at the door.
That was when the handle moved.
Lena didn’t breathe.
She couldn’t.
Her eyes stayed locked on the door as if blinking would make whatever stood outside come rushing in.
Her heart pounded so loudly she was sure it could be heard through the thin wood.
The handle didn’t move again.
But the silence was worse.
She pressed a trembling hand over her mouth, forcing herself to stay quiet. Every instinct screamed at her to run, to scream, to do something, but her body felt frozen in place.
Then came a knock.
Soft.
Slow.
Intentional.
Her knees weakened.
“Who is it?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper, cracking despite her effort to sound calm.
No answer.
Another knock followed, harder this time.
Her phone vibrated in her hand.
She flinched violently, nearly dropping it.
Unknown Number: Open the door, Lena.
Her blood turned cold.
How did they know her name?
Her mind raced.
Only a handful of people knew where she was. And none of them should have known her room number.
Her breathing became shallow as panic tightened around her chest.
She backed away slowly, until the edge of the bed hit the back of her legs.
“No,” she whispered to herself. “This can’t be happening.”
Outside, in the car parked discreetly across the street, Daniel stiffened.
He had been watching the hotel entrance carefully, scanning for any unfamiliar movement. When his phone buzzed, he didn’t need to look at the screen to know who it was.
Unknown Number: You let this go too far.
Daniel’s jaw clenched.
Daniel: She’s scared. End this.
The reply came almost immediately.
Unknown Number: That’s not your call.
Inside the hotel room, Lena’s phone vibrated again.
Unknown Number: I just want to talk.
She shook her head, tears filling her eyes. “I don’t even know you,” she whispered.
The door handle turned slightly.
Just enough to remind her how thin the barrier was between her and whatever waited outside.
Her heart hammered as she scanned the room desperately. There was nowhere to hide. Nowhere to escape. Her gaze fell on the window, and she froze.
Down below, she saw him.
Daniel.
He was outside, standing beside his car now, looking up toward the building with an intensity that made her chest ache. Relief flooded her so suddenly she almost sobbed.
She rushed to the window and knocked lightly on the glass.
Daniel’s head snapped up.
Their eyes met.
For a brief moment, the world narrowed to just the two of them.
Then Daniel’s expression changed.
Alarm.
He raised his phone, typing quickly.
Daniel: Don’t open the door. No matter what.
Her phone buzzed at the same time.
Unknown Number: He can’t protect you forever.
A sharp knock hit the door.
This time, loud.
Demanding.
Lena screamed.
Outside, Daniel moved instantly.
He didn’t care anymore.
About the rules.
About the plan.
About the line he wasn’t supposed to cross.
He started toward the hotel entrance, his heart pounding with a single, terrifying thought:
If he was already inside… then Lena had never been safe.
Inside the room, Lena backed away until she hit the wall, tears streaming freely now.
“Please,” she whispered. “Please just leave me alone.”
The knocking stopped.
A pause.
Then a voice, low and calm, unmistakably close, slid through the door.
“You should’ve stayed invisible.”
Lena slid down to the floor, hugging her knees as fear wrapped around her like a suffocating blanket.
Because whoever was out there didn’t sound angry.
They sounded certain.
And somewhere deep inside, Lena knew one thing with chilling clarity.
This wasn’t random.
This wasn’t a coincidence.
And the flight that was supposed to save her…
Might be the very thing pulling her deeper into danger.
Lena squeezed her eyes shut, her whole body trembling as the silence stretched on.
Seconds passed.
Then minutes.
No knock.
No voice.
Nothing.
Her mind refused to believe the danger had passed. Silence, she had learned, could be just as threatening as noise.
Slowly, she pushed herself up from the floor, wiping her tears with the back of her hand.
Her phone buzzed again.
She flinched.
Unknown Number: You don’t understand what you’ve walked into.
Her chest tightened painfully. Then explain, she wanted to scream. Explain why my life suddenly feels like it’s no longer mine.
Before she could type anything, another message followed.
Unknown Number: When the details come, don’t hesitate.
Her fingers hovered over the screen.
Details?
The flight.
The job abroad.
Her escape.
Or her trap.
A sudden movement outside the window made her gasp. She rushed forward just in time to see Daniel being stopped by a man she couldn’t make out clearly. They spoke briefly, tension visible even from a distance. Then the stranger stepped back into the shadows, disappearing as if he had never been there.
Daniel looked up.
Straight at her window.
Their eyes met again.
This time, his expression wasn’t just protective.
It was a warning.
Lena stepped back slowly, her heart pounding as realisation settled heavily in her chest.
Whatever was happening…
Whatever plan had been set in motion…
She was already a part of it.
And there was no turning back.
