Edge of Decision

Sleep didn’t come easily. Lena lay on her side, staring at the faint crack of light slipping in through the curtain, her body stiff, every nerve alert. The room was quiet, way too quiet. Even the hum of the air conditioner felt louder than it should. She kept replaying the knocks in her head. The first one had been harmless. Room service. Warm food. Relief. The second one… Her chest tightened. No voice. Just the knock. Firm. Patient. Persistent. Who knocks like that? She had stayed frozen on the bed, barely breathing, until the sound finally stopped. Even then, she hadn’t moved. Not until long minutes passed. Not until her legs went numb from fear. Now noon had come, but the unease hadn’t left. Slowly, she pushed herself up and walked to the door, her steps cautious. She checked the lock again. Then again. Her hand hovered over the handle before she leaned down and peered through the peephole. Empty hallway. She exhaled shakily and leaned her forehead against the door. “I’m not safe here,” she whispered, the words tasting bitter on her tongue. Her phone lay on the bed where she had dropped it the night before. She crossed the room and picked it up, pressing the power button with a small prayer. The screen flickered. Then came to life. Relief rushed through her so fast it almost hurt. Notifications filled the screen. Missed calls. Emails. And a message that made her breath hitch. Unknown Number: Be ready. Your flight details will be sent within the next 48 hours. Her heart started pounding. Forty-eight hours? She sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the message like it might disappear if she blinked. This was real. Not a dream. Not a distraction. An escape from all of this drama. But escape to where? And what? She hadn’t told anyone. No friends. No family. Not even herself, really. Saying yes meant leaving everything she knew, that little she had left of it, behind. Saying no meant staying. Her phone buzzed again. This time, a different number. Unknown Number: You didn’t sleep. Lena’s blood ran cold. Her fingers tightened around the phone. How would anyone know that? She typed slowly. Lena: Who is this? The reply came almost immediately. Unknown Number: Someone watching out for you. Her stomach twisted. Lena: Watching me where? Three dots appeared. Disappeared. Appeared again. Unknown Number: You should keep your door locked today. Her gaze snapped to the door. The knock replayed in her head, louder now. Lena: Why? Several seconds passed. Too many. Then Unknown Number: Because not everyone who knocks means well. Her hands were shaking. She dropped the phone onto the bed like it had burned her and stood up abruptly, pacing the room. Her thoughts spiralled, crashing into each other. Who was this person? How did they get her number? And why did it feel like they knew more about her than they should? She glanced toward the window. The curtains were still drawn. After a moment’s hesitation, she crossed the room and pulled them back just enough to peek outside. The street below looked ordinary. Cars passing. People walking. Nothing unusual. Still, her eyes lingered. Then she saw a car parked across the street. Dark. Familiar. Her heart skipped. She recognised it. Daniel. He was sitting in the driver’s seat, sunglasses on, head slightly turned toward the hotel entrance. He wasn’t moving. Wasn’t on his phone. Wasn’t talking to anyone. He was waiting. Her breath caught. Why was he still here? They had exchanged names. Nothing more. He had driven her to safety and left. That should have been the end of it. So why did it feel like it wasn’t? Her phone buzzed again. She didn’t need to look to know who it was from. But she did anyway. Unknown Number: Don’t panic. She laughed softly, a hollow sound. “Too late,” she murmured. Lena: Are you outside? A pause. Longer this time. Her eyes remained fixed on the car below. Then, Unknown Number: I told you. I’m watching out for you. Her pulse raced. That wasn’t an answer. Before she could reply, another notification slid onto the screen. An email. Subject line bold and unmistakable. FLIGHT CONFIRMATION – PREPARATION REQUIRED Her heart slammed violently against her ribs. She opened it with trembling fingers. Dates. Documents. Instructions. And one final line at the bottom: Be prepared to leave on short notice. The weight of it all crashed down on her at once. The knocks. The messages. Daniel outside. The flight is waiting. Everything was moving too fast. She felt like she was standing at the edge of something massive, something she didn’t yet understand. A choice. Her phone vibrated one last time. Unknown Number: When the details come, don’t hesitate. Lena stared at the message, then at the window. At Daniel. At the life she hadn’t planned but was being pulled into anyway. Her heart whispered one thing. Her fear screamed another. And somewhere between the two, the clock was already counting down. 48 hours. Then, from somewhere deep in the hallway, she heard a soft, deliberate click of a door opening across the corridor. Her heart froze. She wasn’t alone. Someone was inside the hotel. Watching. Waiting. And just like that, Lena realised the 48 hours weren’t just about the flight… they were about surviving the next two days alive.
