THE LAST BREATH FROZE 1
The Last Breath Froze
Prologue
The wind howled through the bare trees, lifting swirling clouds of snow that danced like shadows over the white landscape. Night had fallen heavily upon the small town, and the darkness, dense like lead, covered everything. In the middle of the forest, a man collapsed to the ground. The snow absorbed his weight, but not the horror in his eyes.
His last breath froze in the air, leaving behind a faint echo.
Chapter 1: The Winter That Never Ended
The sound of the old clock on the wall was slow and steady, like the heartbeat of someone struggling to stay alive. Elena stood in front of the window of her small house and gazed outside. The world was white, blurred, lifeless. Snow had been falling relentlessly for weeks, as if time had frozen in an endless, cold desolation.
She sighed and wrapped the thick woolen shawl around her shoulders. The heating in her home was barely functioning, and despite the fire flickering in the fireplace, the cold seemed to seep into her bones. Taking a deep breath, she touched the windowpane with her fingertips. The glass was freezing.
Her village, Alden, had changed since the great winter began. Once full of life and sounds, it was now a ghost of its former self. The streets were nearly empty, and those who ventured outside walked hunched over, wrapped in heavy coats, their eyes filled with unease.
Elena knew something was wrong.
Chapter 2: The Dark Secret
Elena woke up early the next morning. The sun had yet to rise, and the house, shrouded in darkness, was filled with the damp chill of winter. She lifted her head from the pillow and looked around. The only sound she could hear was the wind whistling through the cracks in the windows.
Her thoughts drifted back to the nights she had spent trying to understand what had happened to her village. Once, Alden had been a vibrant and welcoming community, full of people who spent their days in the market, chatting and laughing. But over the past two years, everything had changed. People had begun to disappear, one by one. No one knew what was happening, but there was a sense that something unseen had taken hold of the village—something no one could comprehend.
Elena had no answers, but she couldn’t forget that man she had seen the night his last breath had frozen. She had tried to talk about it with others, but they either turned away or pretended not to hear. It was as if they were afraid to mention something they couldn’t explain.
She decided she had to uncover the truth, no matter the cost. She felt that the village’s secret was hidden somewhere out there, in the forest, which seemed to conceal something dark and dangerous. A silent call pulled her towards it, as if it beckoned her to discover something she was never meant to know.
Elena dressed quickly and stepped outside. The cold was unbearable, but her determination was stronger. She had to go where it had all begun. To the forest.
Chapter 3: The Man in the Forest
The trees were bare, their branches stretching toward the sky like sharp claws. Snow covered the ground in a thick layer, and the only sound was her footsteps breaking the silence. Each step felt heavy, as if she were walking in a world that no longer existed.
As she moved forward, she felt a sudden sensation—something was watching her. She turned sharply, but saw nothing. Only trees and the darkness that spread around her. A cold sweat ran down her back. It wasn’t the first time she had felt this way in the forest. There were stories of strange occurrences there, of shadows moving as soon as darkness fell. But she had never believed that such things could be real.
She had reached a clearing when she saw something that made her freeze. In the center of the space, the snow-covered ground was disturbed by the heavy footprints of boots. But what frightened her more was the blood that had dripped onto the snow. It was fresh, still red and alive, as if something had happened just a few hours ago.
Her heart pounded as she followed the tracks. Soon, she came upon a large stone, and beside it, among the roots, lay the body of a man. Elena recognized him immediately. He was the man she had seen that night—his eyes filled with terror.
He was dead, but the most horrifying thing was that his eyes still held the same fear she had seen in them the first time.
What had happened to this man? What had happened to their village?
The answer was out there, and Elena couldn’t turn back now. The man’s last breath had frozen in the air, but hers had to survive—to uncover the truth.
Chapter 4: The Dark Presence
Elena knelt beside the man’s body, her gaze locked onto his face. She couldn’t understand what exactly was happening, but deep in her chest, she felt that the answer lay within the forest itself. Something dark, something ancient had awakened and was slowly taking over their village.
The wind had begun to howl, and the snow swirled around Elena, making her feel as though she had stepped into a world beyond time. She looked at the man’s body and clenched her teeth. She had no time to waste. Something much bigger than she had imagined was lurking out there.
She rose to her feet when something made her turn. A shadow moved quickly behind the trees, and her heart pounded violently. She rushed behind the trees, her eyes fixed ahead, following the tracks left by the shadow. Something told her that if she didn’t, she would lose the chance to discover the truth.
The shadow grew more distinct as she advanced, and Elena felt its presence closer and closer. The forest seemed to swallow her, and the tension in the air was unbearable. But she didn’t stop. She couldn’t return without knowing what was happening. The injustice of all the people who had disappeared pushed her forward.
Suddenly, she stopped. Right in front of her, among the bare trees, a dark figure appeared. A figure that had nothing to do with a human. It was something else, something that seemed to belong to another world. Its form was indistinct and hazy, as if it had emerged from the shadows of the forest.
«Who are you?» Elena shouted, trying to mask her fear.
The figure did not answer. Instead, the atmosphere around her grew colder and tighter, as if it were enclosing her. Elena felt her heart race, but she could not turn back. She couldn’t retreat.
«Answer me!» she called again, her voice echoing through the silence of the forest.
The figure stepped forward, and the cold around her intensified. Unconsciously, Elena took a step back, but the figure followed. The silence was absolute. Something very strange was happening here, she thought. And then, the figure spoke.
«What you see is not real, Elena. You are not meant to know the truth.»
Its voice was raspy and full of menace, and Elena felt the blood in her veins freeze. But her determination to uncover the truth was greater than her fear.
«I have to know! You can’t stop me!» she declared firmly, putting all her strength into her voice.
The figure remained silent for a moment, and the darkness around them seemed to thicken. Suddenly, the trees groaned, and a strange glow passed through the figure’s eyes. A shiver ran down Elena’s spine, and the figure vanished into the air, dissolving into tiny particles of dust.
Elena stood still for a moment, trying to comprehend what had happened. The forest was silent once again, and the only sound was her breathing. Fear still gripped her, but her determination was stronger.
She followed the figure’s path and soon found herself in front of an old, abandoned house hidden deep in the forest. The air around it reeked of decay and neglect. Something was wrong here. Something evil.
