Chapter 7
Charles kept country hours for dinner, and he waited for his guest in the study with a jug of lemonade and two glasses. Farrah had seemingly recovered from his initial shock of not drinking wine, or ale, or even brandy well and now he indulged in the lemonade or even plain water, cold from the well, without comment. It wasn’t that Charles didn’t drink at all, but since returning home from the war, he had drunk more and more until he realised that he spent most of each day and evening in his cups. It took a difficult discussion with Coulson to make him realise what he was doing and stop. Just stopping had been immensely difficult and now he feared that if he started with just one, he could wind up on that path again. So, he didn’t drink anything stronger than lemonade.
