TWENTY-TWO LuAnn sat next to Timothy at the circular table nearest the stage. She slid her heels off and sighed. “I shouldn’t have worn these stupid heels tonight. My boots are much more comfortable, but vanity always wins.” She rubbed one painful heel with her hand. “That wasn’t smart to wear something you knew would hurt your feet. The shoes are very pretty, but if they hurt your feet, I don’t understand why you would wear them?” Timothy gave her a quizzical look. “Sugar, they go perfectly with this sparkly red dress. The boots just wouldn’t have worked. So, I had to wear the heels,” she said. “And now you’re in pain,” he said, stating the obvious. “Yeah, well. That’s just how it goes. Women do silly things to look good, even if it hurts.” LuAnn couldn’t help but give a half smile.
