The Beginning
“Selene,” a deep voice boomed in my head while I sat in my room, staring out the window, scanning the thick green forest that surrounded our pack. I immediately sensed and recognized that it was Julian, my husband and Alpha of this pack. For a short moment, I kept silent, wondering what made him link to me so suddenly. “Selene? Can you hear me?” His voice boomed once again when I didn't respond. I slowly blinked as I let out a hefty sigh. “Yes, I can hear you. What's up?” I finally answered. “Is everything alright? You seem a bit down,” he wondered with curiosity and concern. It was not anything that made me angry in particular, but I had this sinking feeling in my stomach. Everything felt like a storm was brewing. It made me uneasy and very anxious. I couldn't do anything other than just sit and stare out the window, as if waiting for something tragic to happen. “No, everything is fine. I just don't feel well,” I answered, my tone carrying the heaviness. “Still troubled about the nightmares?” He recalled my restless nights. It was getting worse every night, so bad that I sometimes screamed and cried in my sleep. Julian had to cut his business trip short just to be with me. It got better when he was around. Maybe I just felt safer in his presence. He even promised to cancel his trips until I felt better. “Perhaps, but I'll be fine. Is there something you needed to talk about?” I asked him, attempting to dismiss the topic, as I'd rather forget about the nightmares altogether. “I need to talk to you about something,” he said, his tone serious and firm. I felt my heart skip a beat, curiosity reeling in my head. “It sounds serious?” I pointed out, a hint of panic escaping my voice. “It is. Meet me by the waterfall,” he stated. “You are scaring me,” I breathed, completely anxious, fear slowly creeping into my heart. “You don't need to be. Trust me. It's just something I've been keeping, and I really need to say it… about me… us,” he said, very thoughtful. He dropped the mind link before I could ask any questions, leaving me curious and concerned. Mostly scared. What was so serious? What did he want to tell me? Julian barely kept any secrets from me. He always made sure to tell me the truth, no matter how sweet or painful it was. Knowing that he had been keeping something away, something that he thought was important, made my heart race and flooded my mind with questions. I stared at the forest one last time before standing from my seat. My steps felt heavy, and my heart pounded as I made my way to the door. I shuffled through the trees of the forest, my feet crunching against the small dirt path that led to the waterfall. It curved along the tall, flourishing trees. The smell of fresh earth and leaves lingered in my nose, sort of comforting my anxiousness. A cool and steady breeze swept lightly. I could hear the waterfall gushing from the distance as it poured into the river that supplied our pack. Birds chirped in trees, rustling their branches softly. Squirrels and rabbits, startled by my footsteps, swiftly scurried for safety. But my mind was occupied by thoughts hard to ignore, and I was partly absent for half my journey, my head booming with worry. I almost didn't recall how I reached the bank of the river. But when I regained awareness, my heart sank to my knees, and a heart-wrenching scream left my lips. “Julian?” I rushed to the edge of the waterfall to see my husband lying unresponsive. “Julian? Julian, talk to me!” I begged as I shook him, searching for any kind of response. He was still alive with a faint heartbeat when I inspected his body, which was partially drenched by the water. “Somebody help, please! Julian, please don't do this to me!” I cried as I held his unconscious body, heavy in my arms. It was only a second later when the Beta arrived. “What happened?” he questioned, jumping to inspect Julian. He didn't have any injuries or any sign of struggle, which was weird and scary. “I don't know! I found him like this. He said he wanted to talk to me… and then I came here… I found him unconscious,” I cried, trying to explain something that, too, boggled my mind. My heart was beating hard against my chest, hot tears streaming down my face with the splashes of the waterfall. “Please help him. You have to take him to the doctor.” My tears fell on his pale face. “Now!” I ordered the Beta, who was just as confused.
