CHAPTER 1
Ada Monroe peered out the rain-streaked window of her auntâs old house, watching evening shadows stretch across the lonely streets of Ravenwood. The town was small, the kind of place where everyone knew each other, but Ada was still an outsider. Sheâd only arrived a week ago, hoping the quiet would help her recover from the heartbreak she left behind in New York.
But peace eluded her. The wind rattled the shutters, carrying with it eerie stories sheâd overheard in townâthe most chilling about Ravenwood Manor, an abandoned house on the edge of Hollow Lake. Ada heard whispers at the bakery, warnings in the street: *Donât go near the old manor after dark. Some doors are better left closed.*
One stormy night, unable to sleep, Ada was drawn to the window by a flash of lightning illuminating Ravenwood Manor in the distance. Her curiosity got the best of her. Wrapping herself in her thickest coat, she slipped outside, the wet grass brushing her ankles. The sky rumbled overhead as she followed the narrow path lined with gnarled trees toward the manor gates.
As she reached the gates, they creaked open as if inviting her in. Hesitant but determined, Ada stepped forward. The air inside felt heavy, as if the house was holding its breath. Cautiously, she pushed open the massive front door. The hinges groaned, echoing through vast halls lined with tattered portraits and broken furniture buried in dust.
Suddenly, a faint flicker caught her eyeâa single candle burning at the bottom of a grand staircase. Sitting beside it was a young man with dark, haunted eyes. He wore an old-fashioned coat and seemed almost translucent in the dim light. Ada felt a chill, but she couldnât look away.
He turned to her, a sadness in his expression. âYou shouldnât be here,â he said, voice quiet but steady.
Adaâs heart thudded in her chest. âWho are you?â she whispered, trying to sound braver than she felt.
âOnly someone who knows this place never forgets,â he replied. âMy name is Nicholas.â
Ada took a tentative step forward, her curiosity overwhelming her fear. âIâm Ada. I just moved here.â
Nicholas watched her with those searching eyes. âRavenwood Manor isnât just a house. It remembers everyone who enters. Some memories are kindâŠothers, not so much.â
He stood up, gesturing for her to follow. The candlelight cast eerie shadows along the cracked wallpaper as they walked through the dark corridors. Nicholas told her stories of the manorâs pastâof lovers who disappeared, of promises broken, and tragedies that still haunted its empty rooms.
They paused in the ruined ballroom. Cobwebs hung from the crystal chandelier. Ada noticed faded footprints across the dusty floor, as if invisible dancers still circled when the moon was full.
Nicholas whispered, âThey say love never truly dies here. But sometimes, it comes backâŠdifferent.â
He offered her a delicate waltz, his cold hand gentle in hers. Despite herself, Ada felt a sparkâboth fear and the beginning of something dangerous. Outside, thunder crashed, shaking the old house.
As dawn began to break, Nicholas led Ada to the front door. âYou should go before the house decides to keep you,â he said, a soft plea hidden beneath his words.
Ada left the manor with more questions than answers and a heart pounding with new excitement and dread. She knew sheâd returnâand maybe, just maybe, discover the truth behind Ravenwood Manor, and her own heart, too.
HOW ARE U GUYS LIKING IT?
