TWENTY-SEVEN Melitta's breath caught in her throat as George jumped into the cellar. She was so certain he'd fall to his death but he managed to catch onto the opposite wall, sliding down it to the earth floor, apparently unharmed. Melitta breathed again. The unicorn reached the edge of the pit and it appeared to hesitate, perhaps sharing Melitta's doubts that it would survive the jump. Then it reached the same conclusion Melitta had – if the man could walk around after jumping in there, then he would be fine. The beast backed up a few paces, then bunched its muscles and leaped. Right at George. Melitta screamed out a warning. He scrambled up the wall like a monkey, digging his hands into the mortar like his life depended on it. Which perhaps it did, for if the unicorn charged
