From miss nobody to ceo
The office clock struck 6:03 PM.
Karachi’s heat had defeated even the central AC. The 32nd floor of Apex Corp smelled like stale coffee, printer ink, and desperation.
"Amna! These files to the CEO’s office. Now. 5 minutes."
Sarah, my boss, didn’t even look up from her laptop.
I nodded. Three years. Three years I had been an "Office Assistant" at Apex Corp. Salary: 45,000 PKR. Job description: everything. From making tea for clients to taking out the CEO’s trash.
I picked up the heavy files and ran toward the elevator. My black kameez was already damp with sweat.
Inside the elevator, I saw her. Mahak.
My university best friend. 3.9 GPA. Top of our MBA class. Valedictorian speech and all.
"Oh my God, Amna? Is that you?" She laughed, covering her mouth. "My husband was asking about you last week. He said, ‘Amna was so smart in uni. What happened to her?’"
My cheeks burned. What happened? Life happened.
"Just working, Mahak. You know how it is." I smiled. The fake one. The one I’d perfected over 3 years.
"Duh. I’m a Marketing Manager here now. At Apex. Maybe I can put in a good word?" She winked.
I didn’t tell her that Apex was the only place that hired me. As an assistant.
The elevator doors opened. 32nd floor. The CEO’s suite.
Hamza Khan.
28 years old. Billionaire. CEO of Apex Corp.
And my ex-boyfriend.
Three years ago he said, "Amna, you’re amazing. But my family… they want someone with a name. With connections. You understand, right?"
I understood. I understood that "nobody" doesn’t get invited to Khan family dinners.
I knocked.
"Come in."
The office was all glass and gold. Hamza was sitting behind a 20-foot desk, laughing with Mahak. Of course.
"Put the files there and leave," he said, without looking up. His voice. I used to fall asleep listening to that voice.
I placed the files on his desk. As I turned, my heel caught on the carpet.
The files flew. Papers everywhere. Contracts, reports, confidential data.
Mahak burst out laughing. "Oh Amna! You can’t even do this right?"
Hamza finally looked up. His eyes met mine for 2 seconds. Cold. Empty. Like I was a stranger.
Which I was.
"HR," he said to his secretary. "Tell her she doesn’t need to come in tomorrow. We can’t afford mistakes like this."
Just like that. Three years. Gone.
I didn’t cry. I didn’t beg. I bent down, picked up the papers with shaking hands, and walked out.
The elevator ride down felt like a funeral.
At home, Ammi was cooking daal. "Beta, did you get the bonus?"
"Yes, Ammi. Got a very big bonus today." I smiled and went to my room.
I locked the door and collapsed.
MBA. 3.9 GPA. Six internships. Two business competition wins.
And I was fired because I dropped some files.
At 2 AM, I was on the roof. The Karachi sky was full of stars but I couldn’t see any of them.
My phone buzzed. A spam email.
*"Dreame Startup Fund 2025 - 100 Million PKR for Female Entrepreneurs. Application closes in 30 days. No experience needed. Only idea needed."*
I laughed. A bitter, broken laugh.
"Me? An entrepreneur? I can’t even keep an assistant job."
But then I remembered something. Final year project.
"Apex Killer" - that’s what we called it. A business plan to disrupt Apex Corp’s logistics model. More efficient. Cheaper. Tech-driven.
Our professor gave us an A+. Said, "This could actually work."
I opened my laptop. The file was still there. "ApexKiller_Final.pptx"
30 days. 100 million.
I whispered to the sky, "Miss Nobody? Okay Hamza Khan. Let’s see who becomes CEO."
The next morning, I didn’t go to HR to collect my dues.
I went to a cyber cafe and applied.
*Company Name: NOBODY Logistics*
*Founder: Amna Siddiqui*
*Idea: Same-day delivery at half the cost, using AI and bike riders.*
Submit.
30 days. That’s all I had.
---
*Day 3*
Rejection email. "Thank you for applying."
*Day 7*
Second rejection. "Your background doesn’t meet criteria."
*Day 12*
I was selling my mother’s jewelry to pay rent.
*Day 18*
An unknown number called.
"Ms. Siddiqui? This is Dreame Fund. We liked your pitch. Can you come for a final interview tomorrow?"
My hands were shaking so bad I dropped the phone.
---
*Day 19. Dreame Fund Office.*
The panel had 5 people. All men. All in suits worth more than my yearly salary.
"So, Ms. Siddiqui. You have no funding, no team, no office. Why should we give you 10 crore?"
The head judge asked.
I took a deep breath. "Because I have nothing to lose, sir. And Apex Corp has everything to lose."
I presented for 20 minutes. No slides. Just me, a whiteboard, and rage turned into numbers.
How Apex was wasting 40% on middlemen. How I could cut it to 8% using student riders and AI routing.
Silence.
Then the head judge leaned forward. "We’ll let you know."
---
*Day 25*
Email. Subject: CONGRATULATIONS.
*"You have been selected for Dreame Startup Fund. Initial grant: 2 Crore PKR. Mentor assigned."*
I screamed. Ammi came running. I hugged her and cried for the first time in 3 years.
---
*Day 30. The Last Day of the Contest.*
My phone rang. Unknown number.
"Amna? It’s Hamza."
My blood froze.
"Apex heard about your funding. The board is... concerned. Can we meet? For old times’ sake?"
I looked at my new business card. *CEO & Founder, NOBODY Logistics.*
I smiled. "Sure, Hamza. Let’s meet.
But this time, I’m not coming to your office to drop files.
You’re coming to mine."
I hung up.
Outside my new small office, 20 bike riders in blue jackets were waiting. My team.
My name was on the door.
*NOBODY Logistics - Founded by Amna Siddiqui*
From Miss Nobody.
To CEO.
*To be continued in Episode 2: "The First Delivery"*
