As Salvador slowly drifted into the realm of the freshly awake, his brain tried to tie something together, swirling it around only to lose it again down the plug hole. The essence of a new day emerged from the night’s anaesthetic and started to reveal itself in birdsong and the sunlight on his face. Still not quite ready to be released from a long overdue sleep, he thought he’d roll over and grab another few minutes but an unexpected and impertinent gravity opened his eyes wide as he toppled off his seat onto the hard stone floor outside La Mona bistro in San Juan’s old town. The place went quiet.
