My heart beats
SIERRA. Of all things that I imagined could happen to me in my life, I never imagined that I would be the one to discover the secret that destroyed our family. It happened on an ordinary afternoon when I came home earlier than expected, carrying my schoolbag and thinking about nothing more serious than the food waiting in the kitchen. I remember smiling as I pushed open the front door because I thought I was coming home to the same safe family I had always known. Then I heard my father's voice coming from upstairs, and something inside me told me that I should not have been there. I stopped halfway up the stairs. At first, I thought he was talking on the phone because his voice was low and soft in a way I had never heard before. I could not hear the other person clearly, but I heard a woman's laugh, and I immediately felt confused because my mother was downstairs at work. I took another step, then another, until I reached the hallway outside my father's room. The door was slightly open, and when I looked through the narrow gap, I saw something that made the whole world seem to stop. There was a woman standing beside my father. She was wearing a red dress, and his hands were around her waist. He leaned toward her and kissed her like he had done it many times before. The woman smiled against his lips, and my father smiled back at her in a way I had only ever seen him smile at my mother. I covered my mouth with both hands because a small sound had escaped me, and I stumbled backward before either of them could see me. I ran downstairs. My heart was beating so hard that I thought it might break through my chest. I dropped my schoolbag beside the sofa and stood there, staring at the front door as if I could somehow leave and pretend I had never seen anything. Dad was the person I had trusted most after my mother, the man who always told me that our family was strong enough to survive anything. Now I could not understand how the same man could walk downstairs, kiss my mother's forehead, and act as if nothing had happened. That evening, I watched him do exactly that. My mother came home tired, and Patrick took her coat from her shoulders before kissing her cheek. She smiled at him and thanked him, while I sat at the dining table feeling sick. Every time he touched her, I remembered the woman from earlier and wanted to scream. Instead, I pushed food around my plate and wondered whether telling my mother would save her or destroy her. I decided to keep quiet. For two days, I carried the secret everywhere. I went to school with it, ate breakfast with it, and lay awake at night listening to my parents talking in the room beside mine. I kept telling myself that maybe I had misunderstood what I saw, even though I knew I had not. Maybe the woman was a friend, I thought, even though friends did not kiss each other like that. Maybe Dad would stop, maybe he would tell Mom, maybe everything would somehow return to normal. But the secret became too heavy. On the third night, I found my mother sitting alone in the kitchen right in front of her laptop. She looked up when I entered. "Sierra, are you okay?" I sat across from her. "Mom, I need to talk to you about something." Her smile disappeared as she closed the laptop and gave me her full attention. "What happened?" I hesitated, staring down at my hands. How was I supposed to break something like this to my mother without having her heartbroken? "I saw Dad with another woman." The room became completely silent. My mother did not move. "What do you mean?" "I came home early a few days ago, and I heard Dad upstairs. I thought he was on the phone, but when I looked inside his room, there was a woman with him." My voice broke. "They were kissing." My mother stared at me as if she did not understand the words. "No." "Mom..." "No, Sierra." She stood suddenly. "Your father would never do that." "I saw them." Her eyes filled with tears. "Are you sure?" I nodded. "I wish I wasn't." She covered her mouth, and for several seconds she said nothing. Then she walked upstairs without another word. I followed her, crying quietly because I suddenly wished I had kept the secret buried inside me. Dad was in the living room upstairs when she confronted him. "Who is she?" He froze. My mother stood in front of him with tears running down her face. "Patrick, look at me." He looked at her, then he looked at me. Everything was clear from his expression. He did not deny it. My mother let out a broken sound. "How long?" Dad rubbed his face. "Fiona..." "Patrick, how long?!" He looked away. "Several months." I felt my stomach twist. Several months. While I had been laughing with him at dinner, while Mom had believed they were happy, while our family had continued pretending everything was fine, my father had been living another life. "You lied to me," Mom whispered. "I didn't know how to tell you." "You didn't know how to tell me?" Her voice rose. "You had months to tell me!" Patrick tried to step closer. "I'm sorry." She moved away. "Don't touch me!” I stood in the hallway, crying as I watched the two people who had always seemed unbreakable fall apart in front of me. I had thought telling the truth would give my mother a chance to save her marriage, but instead, it felt like I had pushed the first stone that started an avalanche. Dad left the house that night. Jonah, my brother, came home later and found Mom crying in the kitchen. When he learned what had happened, his eyes immediately turned toward me. When we were finally alone—Jonah and I, he gave me a look that made me realize I must have made the greatest mistake ever. "You told her?" I nodded. He stared at me with anger. "Why?" "Because she deserved to know." “Because she deserved to know,” he repeated, staring at me like I was some human specie he had never seen before. "Do you feel better now?" His words hurt. "Jonah, I didn't mean to destroy anything." He laughed bitterly. "Some truths should have stayed buried, Sierra." I flinched. "I thought telling Mom was the right thing." "And look what happened." He pointed toward the hallway. "Dad is leaving." My heart sank. "I didn't make him cheat." "But you were the one who told her about it!” he snapped. “You should've come to me!” That sentence stayed inside my head long after Jonah walked away. Later that evening, I stood near the front door as my father carried a suitcase outside. Mom was upstairs crying, and Jonah had locked himself in his room. I wanted my father to turn around, say he was sorry, and tell us he would stay, but he never did. He stopped at the doorway for a moment, and our eyes met. Neither of us spoke. Then he walked away and the door closed behind him. I stood frozen with tears running down my face, staring at the place where he had disappeared. I knew my father had made the choice to betray my mother, but a terrible thought had already taken root inside me. If I had stayed quiet, maybe he would still be here, maybe Mom would still be smiling, and maybe our family would still be whole. That night, I retired to my room with the cold reality that sometimes, telling the truth did not always feel like doing the right thing.
