                                                                                           •KARSYN• Walking into the market with my father I see people standing around getting ready for the sale. "Do you see which one you might want". My father asked looking down at me. "I want that one". I said pointing to the little girl that was holding on to this women's hand. "WE'RE GOING TO GET THE BIDDING STARTED". Some man said as everybody gathered around. "2 dollars can I get two dollars". He asked looking around. "Here". Somebody said raising their hand. "4 dollars can I get four dollars". He said scanning the crowd. "Here". I heard someone else say. After a while I stopped listening and looked over at the girl who was already looking at me. Looking away I look down at the ground kicking rocks with my hands behind my back. Feeling my father nudge me I look up at him. "Look alive your n*****s up next". He said and I cringed at the word. I wanted to say something but that would only result in a beating. "We have this sweet young thang here so we're going to start off with 10 dollars". He said and my fathers hand instantly went up. "Here". He said with a smile looking down at me. "Can we go for 15". He said and nobody raised their hand. "Sold to the gentleman in the back". He said and somebody walked over handing him a piece of paper as he handed him the money. Looking over at the stage I see them dragging her off. Grabbing my hand my dad makes me follow him to where they kept the slaves to be picked up. "Come on here girl". My father said grabbing her arm but she held on to the lady beside her and that was a huge mistake. "Please come". I said to her with pleading eyes but she shook her head no. Watching my father he draws his hand back to hit her but I jump in front of her and he gave me this crazed look. "You gone embarrass me by protecting this n****r". He said drawing attention our way. "She's just scared pa". I said shaking because I was so scared of what he would do. "I'll handle you when we get home". He said before pushing me out of the way and grabbing the girl as she kicked and screamed. Looking over at all the other slaves they looked so sad and lifeless. "I'm sorry". I said causing them to look down at me. "LET'S GO BOY". My father yelled and I ran over following behind him. Tossing the girl in the wagon he gets on and I follow in suit. "Hey". I said waving at her but she backed away from me. "What did I tell you about talking to them". My father said causing me to turn around away from her. |Home| The ride was long and when we finally made it home the other helpers were there to get the girl. Stepping off of the wagon I reach up and try to help her down when I was snatched back and towards the house. "Betty come get your n****r lovin' son". My father said pushing me towards my mother. "Take him to the room I'll be there soon".He said walking towards the kitchen. "Why can't you just do as he says". She asked guiding me to a room. "Because it's not right ma they're people too you don't own people". I said and she smiled down at me. "I see I've raised you well but your father doesn't want us to be the talk of the town". She said grabbing g my face with both hands. " I don't care what the people say ma". I said staring into her eyes. As she was about say something the door slammed open hitting the wall causing us both to jump. "Get out".He said unbuckling his belt. "Come on Jackson go easy on him". She said trying to reason with him but he pushed her out of the room and slammed the door. "You gone get it now boy". He said walking over to me. This is about to be a long day...
