In Town

Red's POV

The first explosion is what tipped me off. I knew it was not a car crash. I was under a car in the shop when it went off. I slid out from under to see the road out front of the shop swarming with the leeches I had seen in pics from the city. I realized they were just starting to tear up this town. I heard gun fire shortly follow. I knew that the sheriffs and others were shooting back. Grabbing the .50 AE shoulder holster and getting them on. Adding the 9m on my hip I grabbed the keys to the Scout. The Scout was old iron, made in 1973. She would help keep most of my body protected. I had inlaid Kevlar on the doors, hood and other areas of importance. Windshield was made of bullet proof glass as was the rear windshield. I was still slowly adding armor to her as I knew she would be with me when this happened.
Popping the Scout in reverse I seen some of those mindless idiots who did this notice me. They came at me in a straight line. I guess they thought I would stop. I didn't. I heard their screams but kept driving. The first place I needed to get to was the school. They always went for the children. Nobody knew why but those kids they would not get this time. I was pushing the speed through town, when I seen the little café where all the old timers hung out. I seen a group of the invaders breaking windows and plowing inside.
I parked the Scout and stepped out. Looking around I seen no other groups. Grabbing my 9mm I racked a round and stepped towards the door. I seen the first little brat, and put two to his chest. He fell, as another turned and charged. One to the head, after that skirmish started I didn't remember much until I was standing in front of Butch. He and the other where in the back corner near the bathroom with a big kitchen knife.
"Ah, Red its was you coming." A smile lit up the old man's face.
"Come on, my Scout is outside." I turned and started back out making sure what had been in here was down and stayed down. I got them in and then started back down the street. Another wave of them stepped in front. I didn't stop.
I got to the School told Butch to keep everyone in the Scout til I say the word. At the School there was a swarm of them with trucks. I handed the 9mm to Butch. He nodded and took hold. I pulled both .50 AE Desert Eagles from their holsters. Racked back rounds into the chambers. If these ones had body gear, it wasn't gonna help. I headed toward the main doors, the two look outs came at me, the eagles blared and they dropped. I kept going. I found some teachers, a bunch of students and a couple parents locked in a room at the very end of the hall.
"Ruthann lets get everyone out. Where is your bus?" I could see she was upset. She was looking down the hall at what I had done. I gently turned her attention to me. "Lets get the kids together and get them in your bus."
"Yes, Yes of course!" Turning to the kids, "Alright, kids we are going to follow Red and I out to the bus." A single file line formed and I had them follow Ruthann to the main doors where I checked to see if we had more coming, we did not. The bus was pulled up. Kids loaded and then I waved for Butch. He brought the others in the Scout. At the door Butch was the last one to get on.
"I want to stay here and help you." Butch mentioned to me.
"Nah, bud I need you to stay with these kids and make sure they get up to Lia." I put my hand on his shoulder. "Keep the 9mm, and if you see more of this foul, clean them up." I patted his back and he turned to find a seat in front.
Looking at Ruthann I said "Your gonna follow me outta town. Once out don't stop till you get to Lia." I smiled, "You all will be safe with her." I stepped out, she shut the door and I jumped back into the Scout.
They followed me to the edge of town, there I let them past to head up to Lia. I knew Lia was ok, it would be highly unlikely they would bother with how far out we were.
I turned to see a couple SUV's heading this way. I can't let them see the school bus going down the road. Turning the Scout, I plow towards them. Sliding right between them like I am threading a needle I continue back into town. The fairgrounds, there are always volunteers there cleaning and most of them are veterans. Likely no children or others. I throw the hammer down. I don't stop as I plow through their lines and their people. I see more of their vehicles behind me. Bullets are hitting the sides and the windows, blowing out my the passenger and backside of the driver window. Somehow, I managed to get on the road that lead to the fairgrounds. I seen the drop down gate, I picked up speed I wasn't stopping til we got closer to the buildings in the distance.
Busting through the fairground's gate, the Bush guard making short work of the little lever gate. Blasting inside with like 20 of those SUV's behind me I swing into the the building section, that will give me cover and a chance should I need to go hand to hand. Grabbing the rifle out of the back seat I lay on the ground just behind the tire. Knowing engines as I do the old Mosin Nagant rifle is by best choice to do damage. Aiming for the radiator on one SUV facing me I let her sound off. The radiator explodes, sending water and steam everywhere. The men scatter, I start picking them off. I hear more guns going off, I knew it had to be the others that were here. Noticing a good chance for an ambush. Bullets rain down on the SUV's I hear more start from the street. Likely those that hid seen a change too. I see another radiator to the side. I have that one go more men move inside the SUV circle. Bullets continue, those men fall. I want one more radiator, I see one closer to the middle, a harder shot but well worth it. I aim, fire and watch as that explodes. Men inside the circle scatter. The bullets rain down on them as they drop.
All the chaos going I hear foot steps behind me getting louder, I draw an Eagle and roll to meet this person face to face. It's Jay, I recognize instantly. Lowering my weapon he finds a spot behind the tire just next to me.
"This was a good idea." He smiles at me.
