Chapter Ten: Meeting Him Outside of School

935 Words
BECCA By the last class, Dakota and I planned to hang out at her place in the evening, and when she told me that all her friends lived together, I didn't think she meant they all lived together in a freaking mansion amidst the dense forest we passed the first day on our way into the town. I look out of the car, and that's one enormous mansion! Did Dakota really ask me to meet her here? There seems to be no connection with the world outside. I stop the car and climb out as I clasp my hands tightly together. I catch glimpses of many strangers looking up at me, but I try to ignore their gazes or pass them with a shy smile as I walk toward the mansion. I halt at the stone path and look up, taking in this five-story house as I wonder how many rooms there are on each floor. I then look around. The sky is slightly dark, and the ground is lusciously green, with lots of shrubs and flower beds lining the path. I make my way to the porch furnished with clean white patio furniture, and a few stone pedestals and wreaths add to its classy appeal. The walls are white with a touch of blue spread alongside, and it looks like the paint is splattered on the plain white main door giving the porch an aesthetic and inviting aura. Completely in awe, I take in the simplicity and charm of the mansion when my phone vibrates in my back pocket, bringing me out of my reverie. It is an unknown number. I frown. Hey! This is Sienna here. Your mother asked me to look after the house and told me to meet you in the evening. Woah! My mother has already hired somebody? My phone buzzes again. Don't worry. I am a certified housekeeper, in case you are worrying too much. - Sienna. I open the attachment, which is her resume. Her experience looks impressive, and she appears responsible and trustworthy. I will stay here and take care of the house and Aria until you come. - Sienna. I type back. I'll take some time as I am out to meet a friend. Dinner is in the fridge, and Aria's schedule is attached to the refrigerator door. Feel free to relax. Thank you. - Becca. Sure. Take care. - Sienna. I then sigh and knock with tension in my stomach, and the door opens wide. Skylar says, "Hey!?" with her hair tied up in a bun and glasses resting on the bridge of her nose. "Hi." I bashfully wave and smile. Skylar smiles, "You must be here for Al...I mean, Dakota, right?" A minute later, she steps away and gestures to me. "C'mon in, then." I enter the foyer, and my eyes move along the spiral staircase. I look back at her. She walks toward the extensive pastel sofa set, and I notice almost everything matches in this house, from the walls to the curtains and even the couches and the ottomans, the drawers, and the decorative pieces. Everything screams aesthetic. "Make yourself at home. Dakota will be down soon. She's busy with some..." Skylar falls on the couch and glances into her phone. "Sure." I politely take a seat. A minute later, I ask, "So, you all live together?" "Pretty much, yeah!" Skylar replies nonchalantly. "We have lived here for generations, and I bet our kids will too." Oh! Skylar glances at me and shrugs. "We are all very close, you see." Oh! "What about you?" she asks. Huh? Skylar asks, "Your family?" I take a moment to contemplate and then with a smile. "Just my mother and sister, that's all." "What about your dad?" Taken aback, I sigh. "My dad does not live with us." "WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?" someone startles me, so I turn my head and notice the familiar person dreadfully striding down the staircase. Nathan...is so rude. Why? "Woah, take a chill pill!" Skylar says, but Nathan throws her a swift glare. Skylar pokes her tongue out and grins when he looks at me. Scared, I slowly get up and gulp when Nathan steps closer. "What are you doing here?" he snaps when Skylar butts in with a groan. "Dakota has invited her. She is here as Dakota's guest." Nathan doesn't take his eyes off me, making my heart thump. I take a moment to appreciate how gorgeous he is until Skylar clears her throat. I blink and take control of myself at her teasing gaze. I lean back and exclaim, "Anyway, I have something to discuss with Nathan too." His eyebrows furrow. I innocently shrug but then notice them staring at each other. What is that about? For some reason, I don't like how they seem to understand without saying anything. I suggest, "I think we should talk about the project before Dakota is ready to see me. What say?" Skylar gets up and scoffs, "I'm going to my room. See you later, Becca." I purse my lips and nod before I look back at Nathan. Nathan snaps, "So, you want to discuss the project now. Fine!" and then grabs my wrist. I gasp when he begins to lead me to the stairs. "Let's go to my room then. We can talk about..." He then sneakily slips his hand into mine. I wonder what kind of expression he is making because I can't see his face with his back turned to me. My face feels warm and probably turns beetroot red as we walk toward his room.
