ARC ONE: THE FALL OF TWO EMPIRES Chapter OneThe Fall Before the Deal
"Sir... please wake up!" Amelia Hart's scream echoed through the executive boardroom as she dropped to her knees beside her father. Richard Hart lay motionless on the polished marble floor, one hand pressed against his chest, his face pale and covered in cold sweat. "Dad!" Her trembling fingers gripped his shoulders. "Look at me... please look at me!" Nothing. The boardroom, which had been filled with heated arguments only moments ago, had fallen into complete silence. Some directors stared at the floor. Others quietly picked up their briefcases. Not one of them stepped forward. Not one. Amelia looked around in disbelief. "What are you all waiting for?" she shouted. "Call an ambulance!" One of the directors slowly reached for his phone. The others remained still. Almost... relieved. Footsteps echoed through the hallway before two paramedics burst into the room with a stretcher. "Move aside!" Amelia stepped back as they checked Richard's pulse. "We're losing him." Those four words drained every ounce of strength from her body. "No..." She shook her head repeatedly. "No... no... no..." Her father couldn't die. Not today. Not like this. Not after spending thirty years building Hart Industries from nothing into one of the country's most respected engineering companies. This wasn't supposed to happen. --- Three hours earlier... Richard Hart had walked into this very room smiling. He believed today would save the company. Instead... It destroyed it. --- "Hart Industries has officially defaulted on its obligations." The bank chairman's voice was calm. Too calm. He slid a thick file across the conference table. Inside were foreclosure documents. Liquidation orders. Asset seizure notices. Every page carried the same conclusion. Hart Industries was finished. Richard slowly removed his glasses. "There has to be a mistake." "There isn't." "We requested another ninety days." "The request was denied." "Our government project is almost complete." "The investors withdrew." "We can recover." "You no longer have the funds to do so." Every sentence felt like another nail in the coffin. Amelia watched her father's shoulders slump for the first time in her life. He looked... Old. Not the fearless engineer who had built skyscrapers. Not the businessman who had inspired thousands. Just... A tired father fighting a battle he could no longer win. "Dad..." She whispered. Richard forced a smile. "It's okay." But Amelia knew he was lying. --- The conference room doors opened again. Five men in expensive black suits entered. Each carried a leather folder embossed with the bank's logo. Legal officers. Behind them came security personnel. Without asking permission... They began removing confidential company files from the cabinets. "What are you doing?" Amelia blocked their path. A middle-aged lawyer adjusted his tie. "By order of the court, every physical and digital asset belonging to Hart Industries is now under the bank's control." "You can't just walk in here!" "We already have." She glared at him. "This company isn't yours." He met her eyes without emotion. "It is now." The words hit harder than a slap. --- Outside... News had already spread. Employees gathered in clusters throughout the headquarters. Some cried openly. Some called their families. Others simply stared at the building that had given them careers, friendships, and purpose. Rumours spread faster than facts. "They're shutting us down." "I still have two children in school." "What happens to our pensions?" "My wife is due next month..." Fear was contagious. Inside his office, Richard could hear every word. Every voice. Every shattered dream. He closed his eyes. Thirty-two years. Thirty-two years of sacrifice. Of sleepless nights. Of impossible deadlines. Gone... In a single morning. --- "Dad..." Amelia entered quietly. He was standing beside the large glass window overlooking the city. Without turning around, he spoke. "When you were nine..." She frowned. "You asked me why I loved this company so much." She smiled faintly. "You said buildings change lives." Richard nodded. "I believed if I built enough... I'd leave behind something nobody could destroy." His voice cracked. "I was wrong." Amelia walked over and held his hand. "We'll fix this." "No." "We will." "There is nothing left to fix." "There has to be another investor." "I've spoken to everyone." "A loan?" "They refused." "A merger?" "They laughed." Silence. Then... Richard reached into his desk drawer. He removed a small velvet box. Inside was an old silver key. "This..." He placed it in Amelia's palm. "...opens a private vault." She looked confused. "Why are you giving me this?" "If anything happens to me..." "Dad." "Promise me." Her heart tightened. "Don't say that." "Promise me." "...I promise." He smiled. Not happily. Almost... Like a man saying goodbye. --- Suddenly— BANG! The office doors flew open. A security officer rushed inside, breathing heavily. "Mr. Hart..." "What is it?" "The media is downstairs." "They've just received the bankruptcy documents." "And..." The guard hesitated. "They're saying this isn't an accident." Richard's expression changed. "What do you mean?" "They're saying..." He swallowed hard. "...someone inside Hart Industries sold confidential company information before the government contract was awarded." The room froze. Someone had betrayed them. And whoever it was... Had just destroyed an empire. Absolutely. Let's keep the momentum going. The words refused to leave Amelia's mind. Someone inside Hart Industries sold confidential company information. "No..." She stared at the security officer. "That's impossible." "I wish it was, Miss Hart." Richard slowly lowered himself into his chair. His face had turned frighteningly pale. "Who released that story?" "The media says the information came from an anonymous source." Anonymous. The perfect disguise for a traitor. Amelia clenched her fists. "They're lying." The security officer remained silent. "They're trying to destroy our reputation before the investigation even starts." Before anyone could respond, Richard's office phone rang. Once. Twice. Three times. He ignored it. It rang again. Amelia picked it up. "H-Hello?" The voice on the other end was cold. Professional. "Good afternoon. This is the Financial Crimes Investigation Unit." Her heart skipped. "We'd like to speak with Mr. Richard Hart regarding allegations of fraud and contract manipulation." Amelia froze. "W-What?" "The complaint has already been filed." "There must be a mistake." "You may tell him we'll arrive shortly." The call ended. Richard didn't ask what they said. He already knew. One disaster never came alone. --- Outside the building... The once-proud headquarters of Hart Industries had become a battlefield. Journalists surrounded the entrance. Camera flashes lit up the glass doors. Microphones stretched over one another. "Is it true the company is bankrupt?" "Did Hart Industries steal government funds?" "Was the engineering report manipulated?" "Who embezzled the project money?" Every question felt like another bullet. Employees trying to leave the building covered their faces. Some burst into tears. Others denied everything. Security struggled to hold the crowd back. Inside... Amelia watched everything through the window. "They've already judged us." Richard stood beside her. "They always do." "Dad..." "They don't care about the truth." "They will when we prove it." Richard gave a weak smile. "You've always believed people are good." "They are." "No..." His voice was barely above a whisper. "They're only good... until money gives them another option." --- Another knock. This time... Three police officers entered the executive floor. Behind them stood a woman in a navy-blue suit carrying an official case file. She flashed her identification. "Richard Hart?" "Yes." "I'm Inspector Evelyn Brooks." "We have a warrant to question you regarding allegations connected to the East River Smart Bridge Project." The room fell silent. Amelia stepped forward. "My father hasn't done anything." "We're only here to ask questions." "Then why bring officers?" "Procedure." Richard gently placed a hand on Amelia's shoulder. "It's alright." "No, it isn't." "They're treating you like a criminal." Richard looked at the inspector. "I'll cooperate." The inspector nodded. "I appreciate that." Amelia hated how calm everyone else seemed. Only she could feel her world collapsing. --- Forty-five minutes later... The questioning ended. No arrest. Not yet. But the damage had already been done. News channels reported only one headline. HART INDUSTRIES UNDER FRAUD INVESTIGATION. No one mentioned that nothing had been proven. No one cared. --- Evening arrived. The headquarters slowly emptied. Lights went out floor after floor. For the first time in over three decades... Hart Industries was silent. Amelia stood alone in the engineering department. Rows of abandoned workstations surrounded her. Blueprints still covered the drafting tables. Coffee mugs remained beside computers. Someone had left a family photograph on a desk. Life had stopped... As though everyone expected to return tomorrow. But they wouldn't. She walked into her father's office. The bookshelf. The awards. The framed photographs. Everything was exactly where it had always been. Only now... It felt like a museum. She opened one drawer after another. Project files. Old contracts. Engineering sketches. Then... She noticed something strange. One drawer wouldn't close completely. She frowned. There was something stuck behind it. Carefully pulling the drawer out, she reached inside. Her fingers brushed against a brown envelope. No name. No company stamp. Just a single handwritten sentence. For Amelia. Her breathing quickened. She opened it. Inside was a flash drive. And a folded note. She unfolded it. The handwriting wasn't her father's. It read: > If you're reading this... It means we're already too late. Trust no one inside Hart Industries. They've been watching your family for years. The answers you seek are hidden inside this drive. But whatever you do... Don't let Alexander Kingston find it first. Amelia's eyes widened. Alexander... Kingston? She had never heard the name before. Who was he? Why was he mentioned in a message hidden inside her father's office? And why... Did whoever wrote the note seem more afraid of him than the people destroying Hart Industries? Before she could think any further— A loud crash echoed from the hallway. BANG! Someone had kicked open the office door. Heavy footsteps rushed toward Richard Hart's office. A deep voice thundered through the empty floor. "Search every room!" "Find the drive before she does!" Amelia's blood ran cold. She instinctively hid the flash drive inside her coat. The footsteps were getting closer. Very close. Then... The office doorknob slowly began to turn. Slowly. Amelia's heartbeat thundered in her ears. Without thinking, she slipped the flash drive into the inner pocket of her blazer and pushed the envelope beneath a pile of engineering blueprints. The office door burst open. Three men stormed inside. Black suits. Black gloves. No company badges. No identification. The man in front scanned the room before his cold eyes settled on Amelia. "There she is." Amelia instinctively stepped back. "Who are you?" The man ignored her question. "Search the office." The other two immediately began pulling open drawers, emptying cabinets and throwing confidential files onto the floor. "What are you doing?" Amelia shouted. "You can't just break in here!" The leader smiled faintly. "We already did." His voice was calm. Too calm. "You should save your energy, Miss Hart." "Who sent you?" Silence. He walked toward Richard Hart's desk. His eyes landed on the open drawer. Then on the scattered papers. He looked back at Amelia. "Did your father leave you anything?" She forced herself not to react. "I don't know what you're talking about." "No?" He leaned closer. "That's disappointing." One of the men searched behind the bookshelf. Another checked every cabinet. Nothing. The leader's expression darkened. "It's not here." Amelia kept her face blank. Inside... Her pulse was racing. --- "Boss." One of the men held up an old project file. "Nothing." The leader snatched it away and threw it onto the floor. "Damn it." He looked at Amelia again. "If your father contacts you..." "He won't." "...tell him some secrets should stay buried." Amelia's eyes narrowed. "What secrets?" The man smiled. "You'll find out." He turned toward the exit. "Let's go." Just before leaving... He stopped. Without looking back, he said quietly, "Oh... One more thing." "If you value your life..." "Forget Alexander Kingston." The office door slammed shut. --- For several seconds... Amelia couldn't move. Who was Alexander Kingston? Why did everyone suddenly know his name except her? And why did they think she would meet him? She reached into her pocket and touched the flash drive. Whatever answers existed... They were inside this tiny piece of plastic. --- "Amelia..." The weak voice startled her. She turned. Richard Hart stood in the doorway. He looked exhausted. His face had lost all colour. "Dad!" She rushed toward him. "You shouldn't be walking." "I'm alright." "No, you're not." He glanced around the destroyed office. "They came." "You knew?" Richard closed his eyes. "I prayed they wouldn't." Amelia helped him into a chair. "Who are they?" "They're men who don't exist." "What does that mean?" "It means..." Richard looked at the office door before lowering his voice. "...they've controlled companies from the shadows for decades." Amelia frowned. "I don't understand." "You will." He reached into his coat pocket with trembling hands. He pulled out an old photograph. Its edges were faded with age. "There are only two people who can explain this." He handed it to Amelia. Her eyes widened. The photograph showed two young men standing beside an unfinished skyscraper. Both were smiling proudly. One of them was unmistakably her father. The other... A handsome man in an expensive suit. Around them stood dozens of construction workers. At the bottom of the photograph... Someone had written: Kingston & Hart. 1989. Amelia looked up. "Who's this?" Richard stared at the photograph for a long moment. "My best friend." "What happened to him?" Richard's voice almost disappeared. "He was murdered." A chill ran through Amelia's body. "And his son..." Richard looked directly into her eyes. "...is Alexander Kingston." --- The room fell silent. For the first time... Alexander Kingston wasn't just a mysterious name. He was connected to her family. Connected to her father. Connected to everything happening now. But how? --- Richard suddenly grabbed Amelia's wrist. His grip was surprisingly strong. "Listen to me carefully." She nodded. "If anything happens to me..." "Dad, stop saying that." "...promise me you won't trust anyone." "I promise." "Not the police." "Okay." "Not the board." "...Okay." "And especially..." His breathing became uneven. "...not..." He stopped. His eyes rolled back. "Dad?" Richard's body slumped sideways. "DAD!" Amelia caught him before he hit the floor. His breathing was shallow. His lips moved weakly. She leaned closer. "What?" He whispered just one sentence. "So... sorry..." "...I couldn't protect you..." His eyes closed. "NO!" Amelia screamed. "Somebody help!" Her voice echoed through the empty building. No one answered. She reached for her phone with shaking hands. Before she could dial emergency services... An unknown number flashed across the screen. She almost ignored it. Then the phone rang again. She answered. "Hello?" A deep male voice spoke. Calm. Powerful. Completely emotionless. "Miss Amelia Hart." She froze. "Who is this?" There was a brief silence. Then the man said five words that changed her life forever. "My name is Alexander Kingston." Click. The call ended. Amelia stared at the screen. A second later... Her phone vibrated again. A text message appeared. > Tomorrow. 10:00 a.m. Kingston Group Headquarters. Come alone... if you want to save your father. Amelia's blood turned cold. She slowly looked down. Richard Hart lay unconscious in her arms. Then she looked back at the message. For the first time that day... She realized something far more terrifying than bankruptcy. Someone had been planning this from the very beginning.
