Episode 1: A Heavy morning
I woke up at 3:58 AM this morning and I couldn't go back to sleep. For nearly three hours, I stared at my ceiling, and thousands of thoughts were going through my mind, but I couldn't even catch a single one. Finally a voice broke the silence,
“Eva! Eva! Eva!” My Mum called.
I glanced at my table clock, and it was 6:43 AM. A moment later, she opened my door.
“Hello, sweetie. How was your night?” she asked, looking at me closely. “You look worried, my dear.”
“Good morning, Mum. I am fine,” I lied. she replied. “Okay, sweetie, change out of your pajamas and help me in the kitchen. She said gently before heading out.
I was so tired , dragging myself out of the bed, I felt like I had fought a war in my dream. I went to my closet, changed into something loose, then I walked straight to the kitchen to do some dishes. While I was there, My dad walked into the kitchen to get some ketchup;
He stopped and stared at me. I probably looked like someone who had just walked Ten thousand miles to get home.
“Hi, Eva,” he said.
“Hi, Dad.”
“Hope you slept well?”
I answered reluctantly, “Yeah, I did.”
After breakfast, my Mum left for the market, Dad headed off to work, and I went straight back to my room. I opened my laptop to check my email.
Nothing.
Still zero replies from any of the companies I had applied to. I took a deep breath, swallowed the saliva in my mouth. It had been six months since graduation, and despite sending out countless applications, I was met with total silence.
Unexpectedly, my phone rang. The screen lit up with Chloe’s name. I picked it up immediately.
Hi, Chloe”
“Eva! I have good news!” she shouted, her voice bursting with pure joy. “Where are you?”
“I’m home,” I replied, immediately catching her excitement.
“Okay, I will be at your place in twenty minutes!”
Chloe has been my best friend since high school. We went through everything together, even graduating from the same university. I kept my eyes glued to my clock, counting down the minutes, dying to know what her news was. Unable to sit still, I walked to the living room to pour myself a glass of water just to calm some nervous energy.
about five minutes left before Chloe was supposed to arrive, my phone rang again. I rushed back to my room to answer it. It was my dad.
“Hi, sweetie,” he said, his voice was warm. “Listen, I spoke to a friend of mine about your job hunt, and he says he has an opportunity for you. Don't worry, sweetie; I've invited him over to have dinner with us tonight so he can explain everything in detail.”
Two pieces of good news in one morning—even if one was still a mystery!
“Thank you so much, Dad! See you tonight, bye!”
I was still in my mood of excitement when the doorbell rang. I rushed to open it, and there stood Chloe.
“Hi, bestie!” throwing her arms around me.
We ran straight to my room and sat cross-legged on my bed. I couldn't contain myself any longer. “Girl, my ears are literally itching! What is the good news?”
Chloe smiled from ear to ear, opened her email, and proudly handed her phone over to me.
It was an official appointment letter from the biggest company in the city.
“Wow! This is amazing! Congratulations, girl!” I cheered, genuinely delighted for her. We hugged and celebrated her massive win.
But then, an unavoidable question came. Chloe looked at me softly. “Eva, what about you? Any word from the companies you applied to?”
The excitement snapped from me, replaced by a familiar heavy weight. I took another deep breath. “None of them have called or replied to my emails.”
I considered telling her about my dad’s phone call, but since I didn't know any details about the job yet, I decided to keep quiet for now.
“Don't worry,” Chloe said comfortingly, squeezing my hand. “They will call you soon, okay?” I nodded, and we exchanged a small, comforting smile.
Then, Chloe’s expression shifted to something else “What about Tim? Have you heard from him at all?”
Timothy. Just hearing his name stung. He was my college boyfriend. We had believed in each other so deeply, making endless promises to stick together through thick and thin. He used to be so protective, making sure no other guys came near me, and he had even proposed to me with a beautiful, gold-colored bangle. Our love had felt completely inseparable.
But things changed after graduation. He was lucky enough to land a job at a prestigious company right away. Within two months of starting, the calls stopped.
If I called him, he wouldn't answer. On the rare occasion he did pick up, his voice would be cold: "Stop calling me, I'm busy with work. I'll get back to you when I'm free."
Then, three days would pass. Then four.
Distraught and worried, I called him countless times with no response. Finally, I started texting him. His reply shattered my world:
"Why are you disturbing me? Don't you know your class? I am working in a big company now and I'm not on your level anymore. Forget whatever we had in the past. I have a girlfriend here now who is at an upper level in the company. It's over between us. Can't you use your head?"
I stared at the screen, completely unable to believe the words. Trembling, I texted back: "This is not my Tim. Who are you and why are you texting me? Where is Tim?"
Immediately, my phone rang. It was him. The second I picked up, his toxic voice filled my ear.
“Are you a fool? I’m the one who texted you! Stop bothering me. I was just using you, can't you get that? You were the easiest person to fool, that's why I clung to you. I felt embarrassed every single moment I spent with you. It's over.”
Before I could even gasp out a response, I heard a woman's voice in the background. "Baby, who are you talking to?" she cooed.
Tim replied to her, "Oh, it's a nobody." Then he turned back to the phone, raising his voice to a shout. "Stop stalking me, or I will have you and your miserable family arrested!"
He hung up. Tears rolled down my face, choking out any words I might have had. A few seconds later, a final notification popped up. It was a series of photos Tim had sent—pictures of him and the new woman making out and partying on a yacht. I had cried my eyes out for days, but as time passed, I forced myself to grow strong again.
As I finished sharing the whole ugly breakup, Chloe was practically vibrating with anger on my behalf. I felt a lingering pang of self-pity, but I quickly shook it off. Tim was the absolute least important thing for me to worry about right now.
We talked for a while longer, trying to clear the heavy air. Chloe mentioned that she would be moving away in three days to start her new job, but promised we would stay in close contact over the phone.
“It’s getting late, girl,” Chloe finally said, checking her watch. “Come see me off.”
“Okay, let's go,” I replied.
I peeked through my bedroom window before we walked out. The sky had turned dark. “The weather looks really cloudy, like it’s going to pour today. Did you bring an umbrella?”
“Yes, I did,” she smiled.
