CHAPTER1.
A BROKEN BOND In a valley full of ancient trees, the town lay hidden. The whole forest seemed to have a living life of its own--a giant animal that breathed in and out with time. The town's weathered cobblestone paths wended their way among clusters of stone cottages whose roofs were covered with moss. Soft glows from lanterns bobbed in the mist that clung to the air. The forest was alive with the sound that night—leaves rustling, the distant hoot of an owl, or the gentle wind weaving through trees. Lydia stood on the edge of the forest, her fiery red hair cascading down her back in small waves glimmering in the moonlight. Her freckled face was a glow in the pale light, giving her an ethereal quality that contrasted with dark wood. Her green eyes, warm and full of life, looked up at the crescent moon low in the sky and frowned at its long shadow over the forest floor. She was not an ordinary woman; she was a force of nature - strong-willed and fiercely independent. Yet beneath all her strength there lurked a deep vulnerability that lay cold to the touch, a thing known only by her and Samuel. More and more her thoughts turned to him, the man who had won her heart despite the hazards that accompanied their love. Samuel, however, was something different from any man she had ever known. Tall and broad-shouldered, he dominated those around him, every movement full of Power when he moved off (even slightly). His thick unruly hair seemed to glow white under the moon's silver light; this must mean that he was the true alpha among men. His deeply tanned skin made a stark contrast against the brightness that surrounded him, emphasizing his chiseled face. His blue eyes, a deep shade nearly purple held depths of emotion that others saw only in rare moments; a cloud of feelings hidden beneath the calm surface that were never guessed at. And it was he who she called out "The Great King" in her most troubled hours, only half hearing herself as she murmured this at least once every night. Voice, so deep as to help her through times when it seemed impossible to weave or spin any more time into her net of days. But Samuel was more than just a presence in his body language; he was strength and loyalty personified, a pack leader who would do anything for the people he cared about. Still, when he was with Lyla this strength softened and he was reserved only for her turned into a gentleness It was this contrast that drew her to him - the fierce Alpha and the tender lover - both parts of him equally attractive. Their love, however, was a secret, one kept hidden from the world. In the werewolf world, relationships with humans were not permissible and the consequences for such a union were severe. But from the moment they first met this connection between them was undeniable- a force that neither could resist. They spent countless evenings together, hidden deep in the heart of the forest that no one went to look for them. Theirs was the love of stolen moments and whispered promises, one where their passion burned brightly even as they knew it would end Samuel would speak often to Lyla of his duties, of the weight that came with being an alpha male. Yet when he was with her all of this seemed to melt away, leaving only the two of them alone in their world. But both of them knew what the truth was. They were playing with fire. A human in a world of beasts, she was an outsider to the werewolves- little more than Carrion left to rot outside their domain. The pack would tolerate her presence only because Samuel commanded it. She could feel it in their regards, even if nobody ever said a word about how unwelcome it made them feel that there was someone who didn't belong. But it was a fact as unpleasant and unpalatable for them as. Such she never would be one of them. Even so, she couldn’t keep away from him. Their love was like a breath of fresh air, something pure and true in this dark world. She knew the risks involved, the danger that threatened them both, or so it appeared. But that didn't matter then. He was in too deep as well, and so was she. When she arrived, Samual was already there, waiting for her. His tall, muscled form stood out in the moonlight, his hair almost glistening white in the dark sky. So handsome, he looked like someone from an ancient legend, and for a moment, Lyla was entranced by him. His deep blue eyes gazed into hers, and a special smile made only for her curled up the corners of his mouth. "Lyla," he murmured, taking her into his arms. His body warming hug, she drew in a deep breath and nestled her head against his broad chest. This was her place of refuge, where she felt most at peace, in his arms, far from the rest of the world. Like that they stood for a long time, not speaking, just holding each other. Time flew on the night of the full moon, but they did not notice. When they were together, it seemed to stand still as if even all the clocks in Creation itself had somehow been paused so that they together might have this little space of time. But reality intruded all too soon. Lyla removed herself an inch or two from Samuel and sought his face with a certain expression of concern. "I'm tired of this, Samuel," she said softly. 'It's too risky.' The alpha male in him was increasingly dominant, and his expression grew stiff. "Lyla, It’s okay, I won't allow anything to happen to you. I'll protect you, no matter what." She shook her head at him. "You can't protect me from everything. And what about your pack? They're your family. You can't turn your back on them because of me." Yet Samuel turned his face away, and his jaw tightened. He focused his attention on the waiting dark forest. "I know," he said at length. "But at the same time, I can't lose you." Her hand went out to take hold of his. "You won't lose me," Lyla assured him, voice low. "We just have to be careful. If anyone finds out..." He tightened his grip on her hand as their eyes locked. "No one will find out," he said hotly. They stood quietly in the moonlit garden, the weight of their situation hanging heavy. The love between them was certainly genuine, yet fragile as a piece of glass balanced delicately on its edge. Another act of heedlessness, one false move, and the whole thing would come tumbling down. Long into the night, they spoke about everything and nothing. Though they touched on most things about life, about the Pack, the future, and especially the kind of world they yearned to live in, things dragged on. Their feelings might not change, but their circumstances changed, always there around the corner, ready to pounce the minute they let up their guard. At the hour, when it became time for Lyla to go, Samuel walked her to the edge of the forest with his hand still tight in hers. "Take care," he told her, his voice full of concern. The corners of her mouth curved upward as she tried to put on a brave smile. "I will. You too." They kissed, the last kiss they would have as love and longing filled each other's hearts. With a sidelong glance, Lyla turned around and walked off into the night—gone. Samuel watched her leave, the weight of their impossible relationship heavy on his heart. He knew they couldn't go on like this forever, but for now, he was prepared to fight for what they had. Lyla made her way back to town, her thoughts a swirling confusion of emotions she couldn't quite understand. She loved Samuel with all her being, but she also understood that their love was a ticking time bomb that could detonate at any moment. However, for now, she would treasure these days they spent together hanging on to the hope that somehow, they would all come right. What they didn't know, however, was that they were not the only ones there. In the shadows, one person had been watching them all along... a figure with eyes full of malice and a heart burning with jealousy. Ryder, who had witnessed everything, smiled cruelly as he turned away. Things were about to change, but neither Lyla nor Samuel knew how much at risk they were
