Storm in the Hospital
The hospital room felt charged with tension.
Mira and Adrian stood on opposite sides of the room, glaring at each other.
Neither was willing to back down.
Neither was willing to stay silent.
And Elena sat between them, exhausted.
"She needs rest," Mira snapped.
Adrian folded his arms.
"Then stop shouting."
Mira let out a bitter laugh.
"You're unbelievable."
The doctor, hearing the raised voices, stepped inside.
His expression immediately became stern.
"This is a hospital."
The room fell quiet.
For a moment.
Then Adrian turned toward Elena.
"Get your things."
Elena blinked.
"What?"
"We're leaving."
The doctor frowned.
"Actually, I'd prefer she stay a little longer for observation."
Adrian looked annoyed.
"She's fine."
The doctor's face hardened.
"I'm the doctor here, Mr. Hart."
For the first time, Adrian had no reply.
The doctor turned to Elena.
"You can leave later today if everything remains stable."
Elena nodded gratefully.
Once the doctor left, silence returned.
Heavy silence.
Uncomfortable silence.
Finally, Mira sat beside Elena.
As though physically placing herself between Elena and Adrian.
Adrian noticed.
His eyes darkened.
But he said nothing.
Instead, he pulled out his phone and started checking messages.
A few seconds later, his expression softened.
Elena knew why.
Vanessa.
The realization hurt.
Even now.
Even after everything.
---
Several hours later, Elena was discharged.
The nurse handed her a few papers and explained the doctor's instructions.
Rest.
Proper meals.
Avoid stress.
Elena nearly laughed.
Avoid stress?
If only it were that simple.
The nurse smiled warmly.
"Take care of yourself."
Elena nodded.
"I will."
Though deep down, she wasn't sure how.
---
Outside the hospital, rain clouds gathered overhead.
The sky was dark and threatening.
A storm was coming.
Mira carried Elena's small bag while Adrian walked ahead toward his car.
Not once did he offer to help.
Not once did he ask if she felt alright.
Mira noticed too.
She always noticed.
By the time they reached the parking lot, her patience had vanished.
She stopped walking.
"So that's it?"
Adrian turned.
"What now?"
Mira pointed at Elena.
"She was in the hospital."
"And now she's leaving."
Mira stared at him in disbelief.
"You didn't ask how she was feeling."
Adrian sighed heavily.
"As you can see, she's alive."
The words hit Elena like ice water.
Mira looked ready to explode.
"That's all you care about?"
Adrian's expression remained cold.
"What exactly do you want from me?"
Mira stepped closer.
"I want you to treat her like a human being."
The rain began falling.
Slowly at first.
Tiny droplets landing on the pavement.
Adrian laughed humorlessly.
"She's my wife."
"That's exactly the problem."
The storm intensified.
Thunder rolled across the sky.
People nearby began hurrying toward shelter.
But neither Mira nor Adrian moved.
Years of anger were finally pouring out.
"You don't love her."
Mira's voice shook.
"You never loved her."
Adrian didn't deny it.
That hurt Elena more than if he had.
"She knew that before we got married."
The answer came instantly.
Like he had repeated it a thousand times.
As though it excused everything.
Mira stared at him.
Disgust filled her eyes.
"You think honesty gives you permission to hurt her?"
Adrian's jaw clenched.
"Stay out of this."
"No."
The word rang out sharply.
"No, Adrian."
Mira's voice softened slightly.
"But someone has to care about her."
The rain continued falling.
Harder now.
Elena stood frozen.
Watching.
Listening.
Hurting.
Because both of them were speaking truths she didn't want to hear.
Then Mira turned toward her.
Her eyes filled with concern.
"Elena."
Elena looked up.
"You don't have to go back."
The world seemed to stop.
Even Adrian looked surprised.
Mira stepped closer.
"You can come with me."
Thunder cracked across the sky.
Elena's heart pounded.
The offer hung between them.
Tempting.
Terrifying.
Impossible.
Could she really leave?
Could she walk away from six years of marriage?
Could she start over?
Adrian scoffed.
"She's not going anywhere."
The certainty in his voice frightened her.
Because part of her believed him.
For years, he had controlled every part of her life.
For years, she had obeyed.
For years, she had stayed.
Mira grabbed her hand.
Gently.
"You have a choice."
The words felt strange.
Choice.
Freedom.
Escape.
They sounded like words meant for other people.
Not her.
Never her.
Yet something stirred inside her chest.
A tiny flicker.
A tiny spark.
The same spark that had appeared after reading Mira's note.
The same spark that had whispered there might be another life waiting beyond the mansion walls.
Before Elena could answer, Adrian opened the passenger door of his car.
"Get in."
The command shattered the moment.
Fear rushed back immediately.
Old habits.
Old wounds.
Old chains.
Elena looked at Mira.
Then at Adrian.
Then at the rain pouring from the sky.
And finally...
She climbed into Adrian's car.
Not because she wanted to.
Because she wasn't ready.
Not yet.
But as the car pulled away, Mira stood in the rain watching them leave.
And something in her expression changed.
Determination.
She was done waiting for Elena to save herself.
If her best friend couldn't see the prison she was trapped in...
Mira would find a way to show her.
No matter what it took.
And inside the moving car, Elena placed a trembling hand over her stomach.
A silent promise formed in her heart.
I don't know how yet...
But someday, somehow...
I'll get us out.
The storm outside raged on.
But a much bigger storm was only beginning.
