Chapter Eleven

Punished for Surviving The drive home was silent. Rain battered the windshield as Adrian drove through the city. Elena sat quietly in the passenger seat, her hand resting protectively over her stomach. Every bump in the road made her nervous. Not for herself. For the baby. Her baby. The secret she carried beneath her heart. The secret Adrian could never know. At least not yet. The storm followed them all the way to the mansion. By the time they arrived, the sky was nearly black. Thunder rolled overhead. The servants hurried to open the doors. Adrian walked inside without waiting for Elena. Just like always. She followed slowly. Still weak. Still exhausted. Still recovering. But none of that seemed to matter. The moment they entered the house, Adrian stopped. Slowly he turned around. Something about his expression made Elena uneasy. Very uneasy. "What exactly happened at the hospital?" Her heartbeat quickened. "The doctor treated me." "I know that." His voice hardened. "What was wrong with you?" Elena froze. For a second she thought he somehow knew. That the doctor had told him. That the secret was gone. But then she remembered the doctor's promise. "No one had told him." She forced herself to remain calm. "I wasn't feeling well." Adrian stared at her. Clearly dissatisfied with the answer. "You caused quite a scene." Elena blinked. "A scene?" He laughed bitterly. "Mira rushing you to the hospital in the middle of the night." His eyes narrowed. "The servants gossiping." The anger in his voice shocked her. As though her illness had embarrassed him. As though she had done something wrong. "I'm sorry." The words slipped out automatically. Adrian shook his head. "You always have a problem." Something inside Elena hurt. Not physically. Emotionally. Because she had nearly collapsed. And yet somehow, in his eyes, she was still the inconvenience. --- The next few days were miserable. Adrian barely spoke to her. When he did, his words were cold. Sharp. Cruel. The mansion felt colder than ever. Even the servants seemed worried. Elena tried following the doctor's instructions. She rested. She ate properly. She avoided stress whenever possible. But avoiding stress while living with Adrian was like trying to stay dry in a hurricane. Impossible. Every day she feared he would discover the truth. Every day she feared what would happen if he did. --- One evening, Adrian came home later than usual. The smell of alcohol filled the hallway. His mood was terrible. Elena knew immediately. Something had happened. The safest thing to do was stay quiet. So she did. She sat in the living room reading a book while he poured himself a drink. Then another. Then another. Eventually he looked at her. "What are you doing?" Elena lowered the book. "Reading." He frowned. "You seem comfortable." The comment confused her. She said nothing. That turned out to be a mistake. Because suddenly Adrian stood. And his anger exploded. "You spend all day sitting around while everyone else works." Elena stared at him. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. The doctor had literally ordered her to rest. But reason never mattered when Adrian was angry. "I wasn't feeling well." The moment she said it, she regretted it. His eyes darkened. "Again." The word dripped with annoyance. Not concern. Annoyance. Elena lowered her gaze. Trying to avoid an argument. Trying to keep the peace. Trying to protect her baby. But Adrian wasn't interested in peace. "You always have an excuse." The words came one after another. Each one sharper than the last. Until finally he pointed toward the front door. "Get out." Elena looked up. Certain she had heard wrong. "What?" "I said get out." Thunder rumbled outside. The rain had started again. Heavy. Cold. Merciless. "Adrian..." "Go." His voice echoed through the room. The servants froze. Nobody moved. Nobody spoke. Elena's heart pounded. Surely he wasn't serious. Not in this weather. Not after everything. But one look at his face told her otherwise. He meant it. He absolutely meant it. --- A few minutes later, Elena stood outside the mansion. The front door slammed shut behind her. Then came the sound of a lock turning. Click. The noise echoed in her chest. She stared at the closed door. Unable to believe what had happened. The rain soaked her instantly. Cold water ran through her hair. Down her face. Into her clothes. Thunder shook the sky. Elena wrapped her arms around herself. Shivering. Alone. Pregnant. Abandoned. She knocked once. No answer. Twice. Nothing. Then she stopped. Because she already knew. He wasn't going to let her in. Hours passed. The storm grew worse. The cold became unbearable. Her body trembled violently. Several times she considered calling for help. But she had no phone. No way to contact Mira. No way to contact anyone. She was trapped. For a moment she looked up at the dark sky. And tears mixed with the rain. Not because of Adrian. Not anymore. Because of the baby. The innocent child growing inside her. A child who deserved warmth. Safety. Love. Everything Elena herself had never received. Slowly she placed both hands over her stomach. And whispered the first words she had ever spoken to her unborn child. "I'll protect you." Her voice cracked. Rain streamed down her face. "I promise." The words were barely audible. Yet they felt powerful. Real. For the first time, Elena wasn't enduring pain for Adrian. She was enduring it for someone else. Someone tiny. Someone innocent. Someone who needed her. And in that moment, something changed. The woman who had spent years sacrificing herself for a man began finding the strength to fight for her child. She didn't realize it yet. But the first step toward freedom had already begun. Because the next morning, Mira would discover what Adrian had done. And she would finally stop asking Elena to leave. Instead... She would help her escape.
