The Rainy Promise
The storm finally ended just before dawn.
The rain slowed to a drizzle, and the dark clouds began to drift away.
Elena was still sitting outside the mansion.
Cold.
Exhausted.
And barely able to keep her eyes open.
Her clothes were soaked, and her hands trembled from hours spent in the freezing rain.
She had never felt so alone.
Yet somehow, she had survived the night.
The front door finally opened.
A servant stepped outside carrying a blanket.
The woman gasped when she saw Elena.
"Mrs. Hart!"
Elena attempted a smile.
It came out weak and broken.
The servant immediately wrapped the blanket around her shoulders.
"You were out here all night?"
Elena nodded.
The servant's eyes filled with tears.
No one in the house could understand how Adrian could be so cruel.
No one.
---
A few hours later, Mira arrived.
One of the servants had secretly contacted her.
The moment she saw Elena, her face went pale.
Then red.
Then furious.
She rushed forward.
"What happened?"
Elena looked away.
That was answer enough.
Mira already knew.
The blanket.
The pale skin.
The exhaustion.
The swollen eyes.
The signs were obvious.
"Tell me."
Elena hesitated.
Then quietly spoke.
"He locked me outside."
For a moment, Mira simply stared at her.
As if trying to process the words.
Then her expression changed.
Not shock.
Not sadness.
Rage.
Pure rage.
"He did what?"
Elena lowered her head.
Mira paced across the room.
Unable to stay still.
Unable to calm down.
"He left you outside all night?"
Silence.
Mira's fists clenched.
"You could have gotten seriously sick."
Another silence.
Then Elena whispered something that shattered Mira's heart.
"I'm used to it."
The room became very still.
Mira stared at her best friend.
The woman she had known since childhood.
The woman who once dreamed of fairy tales and happy endings.
The woman who now believed cruelty was normal.
And suddenly Mira realized something.
If Elena stayed here...
She would never leave.
Not on her own.
Because years of suffering had convinced her she deserved it.
And that terrified Mira more than Adrian ever could.
---
That afternoon, Mira sat beside Elena in the garden.
The weather had improved.
The sun shone brightly.
Birds sang from nearby trees.
The world looked beautiful.
But Elena barely noticed.
She sat quietly with one hand resting over her stomach.
A habit she had developed recently.
Mira watched her.
Then smiled softly.
"You're thinking about the baby."
Elena nodded.
A small smile appeared on her face.
One of the few genuine smiles Mira had seen in years.
"I wonder if it's a boy or a girl."
Mira laughed.
"Already?"
Elena shrugged.
"I can't help it."
For a few moments, they simply sat together.
Enjoying the rare peace.
Then Elena spoke.
"Mira?"
"Yes?"
"What if I'm not a good mother?"
Mira immediately shook her head.
"Impossible."
Elena smiled weakly.
"You don't know that."
"I do."
Mira's answer came without hesitation.
"Because I know you."
The words warmed Elena's heart.
Mira reached over and squeezed her hand.
"Do you remember the orphanage?"
Elena laughed softly.
"How could I forget?"
"We used to take care of the younger children."
A memory surfaced.
Tiny children crying during thunderstorms.
Elena reading bedtime stories.
Sharing food.
Sharing blankets.
Sharing whatever little they had.
Mira smiled.
"You've been a mother your whole life."
Elena felt tears sting her eyes.
Not painful tears.
Hopeful tears.
---
That evening, after Mira left, Elena returned to her room.
The mansion felt strangely quiet.
Adrian still hadn't come home.
Probably with Vanessa.
The thought didn't hurt as much as it once had.
Instead, Elena sat by the window.
Watching the sunset.
Her hands rested protectively over her stomach.
And for the first time, she spoke directly to her unborn child.
"Hello."
A tiny laugh escaped her lips.
She felt silly.
Yet she continued.
"I don't know if you can hear me."
The room remained silent.
"But if you can..."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I want you to know something."
She took a deep breath.
A promise forming in her heart.
The most important promise she had ever made.
"No matter what happens..."
Her voice trembled.
"I will love you."
The words felt powerful.
Healing.
True.
"I will protect you."
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"You will never feel unwanted."
Another tear followed.
"You will never feel alone."
She closed her eyes.
Holding her stomach gently.
As though holding her child already.
And in that moment, Elena understood something.
For years she had lived only for Adrian.
For his approval.
For his attention.
For a love he never intended to give.
But now there was someone else.
Someone worth fighting for.
Someone worth living for.
Someone worth leaving for.
The realization frightened her.
Because it meant Mira had been right all along.
A better life existed.
And maybe...
Just maybe...
It was time to reach for it.
---
Later that night, Mira sat in her apartment staring at a notebook.
Inside were names.
Addresses.
Plans.
Possible apartments.
Possible jobs.
Possible futures.
For the first time, she wasn't wondering if Elena should leave Adrian.
She was planning how.
Because one thing had become painfully clear.
If Elena stayed...
The story would end in tragedy.
And Mira refused to let that happen.
No matter what it cost.
