Chapter 26

735 Words
Setting Boundaries Sofia studied David with a mix of pain and determination, the bruising on her face contrasting sharply with her fierce spirit. “You think you can just come here and fix everything with words? You think saying you care will magically erase what’s happened?” “I don’t expect that,” David said, his voice steady despite the turmoil in his heart. “But I need you to understand my priorities. I’m doing my best to take responsibility for what happened. But it can’t come at the expense of my family.” Sofia leaned back against her pillows, the fight in her eyes dimming just a bit. “You know it’s not that easy. Feelings aren’t something you can turn off like a light switch. I won’t lie, David—my feelings for you are still here, and it hurts to see you trying to pretend like everything’s fine.” “I’m not pretending,” David replied, his tone clipped. “I’m trying to juggle the truth of what we've turned into with the reality of my responsibilities. I want to ensure I'm there for you, but I can't let that affect my marriage or Chris.” Sofia’s gaze fell to her hands, and David could see the tears glistening in her eyes. “You didn’t just tear apart a relationship; you hurt a family. I thought we had something real, David. It wasn’t just a fling for me!” David felt the weight of her words sink like stones in his chest. “I thought so too, Sofia, but I have to face the consequences of my actions. I love my family, and I can’t put you in a position where you feel you’re fighting for a place that isn’t yours now.” Sofia’s expression hardened for a moment. “You think I want to fight for something broken? I don’t want to come between you and Lena, but I can’t just pretend that I don’t want you.” “And I don’t want to hurt you any more than I have,” David said firmly. “But right now, my obligation is to Lena and Chris. The chaos this has created has to stop—it’s only causing pain for everyone involved.” A silence fell between them, the weight of what they had shared now settling uncomfortably in the room. Sofia finally broke the silence, her voice barely a whisper. “So where does that leave us?” “It leaves us with boundaries,” David explained cautiously. “I’ll support you in your recovery. I want to help you heal. But you need to respect the fact that Lena and Chris are my priority. There can’t be any more secrets, any more ambiguous situations.” Sofia nodded slowly, her eyes glistening with a mix of defeat and understanding. “So this is goodbye then?” David swallowed hard. “For now. I want you to focus on getting better, and I hope we both can move on. I hope you can heal from this.” “Do you really think it’s that simple?” Sofia accused, the defiance flickering back in her eyes. “You think I can just erase everything we shared because you want to focus on your family?” “No, it’s not simple; nothing about this situation is,” David admitted. “But we have to try. I want to make sure this doesn’t drag you down or haunt our family any longer. We can’t keep going on like this.” Sofia took a shaky breath, her vulnerability surfacing. “I’ve never felt so lost, David. Everything feels shattered. What if I’m not strong enough to move on?” “You are,” he reassured her, his voice filled with compassion. “With time, you’ll find your way back to yourself. Just focus on your recovery. Please allow this to be the closure for both of us, for the well-being of everyone involved.” After a few tense moments, Sofia nodded, the fight dimming in her eyes. “Alright. I’ll respect your wishes, but just know—you may have closed this chapter, but it doesn’t mean what we had was meaningless.” “And it won’t be forgotten either,” David replied gently. “But we both need to embrace our reality. For the sake of our lives and the ones we love.”
