Chapter 25

Chris’s tablet, a warm reminder of the innocence that still resided within their son. For a fleeting moment, Lena felt a surge of hope—perhaps they could navigate this storm together and emerge stronger. However, as she leaned back against the couch, the shadows of the unresolved past loomed large in her mind. Sofia was still a lingering storm cloud over their family, and no matter how they tried to patch things up, the rift created by betrayal and violence would take time to heal. “David,” she said softly, bringing his attention back to her. “What do you think we should do about Sofia? I don’t want her to be a constant presence, but I also don’t want to escalate things further.” David rubbed his temples, clearly deep in thought. “We need to set boundaries,” he replied. “We’ll be civil, especially if it helps Chris feel secure. But I think it’s crucial that she understands our family dynamic needs to come first.” “That sounds fair,” Lena agreed, though apprehension tinged her words. “But how can we ensure she respects those boundaries? I worry she’ll find a way to weasel back in.” “I’ll talk to her,” David said, his voice firm. “Letting her know that our family comes first should be priority number one. This is our chance to redefine—no more games, no more misunderstandings. It has to be clear that our focus now is on healing.” Lena breathed in deeply, feeling a knot in her stomach loosen slightly. She wanted to believe that they could come together, that with every conversation, they could turn this ship around. “Okay,” she said, her resolve hardening. “But you have to promise me that you’ll be honest with me about everything. I can’t handle any more secrets or surprises.” “I promise,” David replied, sincerity in his tone. “We’ll face the uncertainty together, one step at a time.” As the night wore on, they moved back into the living room, settling into a space of mutual understanding. Together, they discussed how best to prepare Chris for the days and weeks ahead and came up with actionable steps to make their family unit feel whole, again. The next few days were rife with tension, yet also laced with moments of hope. Lena and David made time to engage with Chris and focus on their family bond. They took him out for ice cream, started a game night tradition again, and took long walks together around the neighborhood, each experience reminding them of their purpose: to nurture the love that still existed in their family. But inevitably, the moment of confrontation loomed. David informed Lena that he planned to visit Sofia at the hospital, and the anxiety that had been brewing inside her returned full force. “Are you sure you want to do this?” Lena asked, her voice tentative. “What if it opens old wounds?” “I need to talk to her,” David replied, a determined look on his face. “It’s not about rekindling anything. It’s about making it clear that this chapter is closed for good.” Lena swallowed hard, attempting to mask her doubts. “I understand, just… please be cautious. I don’t want this to turn into another fight.” “I will,” he assured her. “I promise to keep our family and your feelings at the forefront of every conversation.” When the day arrived for David's visit, Lena couldn't shake off the anxiety clawing at her insides. She busied herself around the house, trying to distract her mind, but the clock ticked away, counting down to the moment that could change everything again. Finally, as the afternoon sun dipped into the horizon, David left for the hospital, leaving Lena battling waves of uncertainty. She fought the urge to call him for updates, wanting to trust that he would handle things appropriately. Hours ticked by, and the silence in the house was deafening. It was difficult not to imagine David caught in a whirlwind of emotions. But as night fell, fear gripped her with icy fingers. What if he decided to re-engage with Sofia emotionally? What if this visit unraveled all the progress they had made? Finally, her phone buzzed.
