...not everything is okay, sweetie,” Lena finally managed to say, her voice trembling. “There have been some problems between your dad and me, things that we should have talked about sooner.”
Chris sat up, his eyes wide, the playful energy from before replaced by concern. “Like what? Did I do something wrong?”
“No, no, honey, you haven’t done anything wrong,” David interjected quickly, kneeling beside Chris’s bed. “This is about us, not you. We love you very much, and we want you to know that no matter what happens, we’re still a family.”
“But Mom looked upset,” Chris said, glancing between them as if searching for answers. “Is it because of Sofia?”
Lena’s heart sank at the mention of Sofia’s name. “Yes, it is. Things have been complicated with Sofia,” she confessed, her throat tightening. “There were moments where I didn’t know how to handle it, and I let my anger get the better of me.”
“What do you mean?” Chris asked, his innocent curiosity piercing through Lena’s heart.
“We had a fight. And I hurt her,” Lena said gently, looking her son in the eye, willing him to understand. “I didn’t mean for it to happen, but I let my feelings get out of control. I’m really sorry.”
Chris’s expression shifted from concern to confusion. “Why would you fight her? Is she going to be okay?”
“Y-yeah. She’s at the hospital, but they’re taking care of her,” David said, his voice steady and reassuring. “She’ll be fine. But we needed you to know that there are consequences to the choices we make.”
Chris looked back and forth between his parents, trying to grasp the situation. “I don’t understand. Why is it so complicated? Aren’t we supposed to be a family?”
Lena felt tears prick at the corners of her eyes. “Yes, we are. And that’s what we’re working on. Sometimes families go through tough times, and we have to find a way to overcome them together.”
“I just want everything to be normal again,” Chris whispered, his voice cracking. “I don’t want anyone to be hurt.”
“I know, buddy,” David said gently, placing a comforting hand on Chris’s shoulder. “And we’re going to do our best to fix this. It might take some time, but we’ll find a way. We’re all going to try hard to communicate and be honest moving forward.”
“Does that mean I can still go camping with you guys?” Chris asked, a faint glimmer of hope in his eyes.
“Absolutely,” Lena said, her heart swelling at his resilience. “We’ll go camping together, just like we planned. That’s important to me, too.”
The silence stretched around them for a moment as Chris processed the information. “I just don’t want anyone to be mad at each other,” he finally said, his small voice heavy with concern.
“We feel angry and sad sometimes, but it’s okay to talk about those feelings,” David replied, rubbing Chris’s back. “What’s important is that we love each other, even in the hardest times.”
“Okay,” Chris said softly, his eyes casting down as he started to comprehend the gravity of the situation.
Lena felt a weight lift slightly but realized that the journey to rebuilding their family wouldn’t be easy. “We’ll work through this together. I promise.”
Chris nodded, though the worry in his eyes remained. “Just promise you won’t fight anymore. I don’t want anyone to get hurt.”
“I promise,” Lena said, her voice firm. “I won’t let my anger take over again.”
As they finished their conversation, Lena felt an overwhelming sense of hope flicker within her. They could mend the cracks, but it would take effort and sacrifice. As Chris returned to his tablet, Lena looked over at David, who was watching their son with a mix of pride and concern.
“We have to be stronger for him,” David whispered, brushing his fingers through his hair. “He can’t see any more of this chaos.”
“Agreed,” Lena said, determination coursing through her. “We fight for Chris. We also have to navigate how to deal with Sofia without letting it drag down our family any further.”
“Right,” David replied, steeling himself. “I’ll reach out to her family to check on her when she gets home. She deserves whatever support she needs, but I don’t want to complicate things for us.”
Lena nodded. “We can’t let this escalate any further. I don’t want this fight to be the last word on our family.”
Just as they began to strategize how to handle Sofia and repair their marriage, Lena heard the sound of Chris’s laughter coming from his room and smiled, At least his smiling, for now.
