Lena held onto David tightly, savoring the brief moment of solace but acutely aware that the storm was far from over. Their world had been turned upside down, and each heartbeat reminded her of the residual tension that lingered in the air. What would she say to Chris when he inevitably found out that his family was fractured?
As they pulled apart, David looked into her tear-streaked eyes, his expression softening. “We need to talk to Chris together. He deserves the truth from both of us.”
Lena nodded, though the pit in her stomach deepened. “What do we say?” The dread settled like a stone. “How do we explain this to our son?”
“We tell him we’re working on fixing things,” David replied calmly. “We emphasize that we both love him and that we’re committed to navigating this together.”
“Together…” The word echoed in Lena’s mind, mingling with her lingering doubts. Would they truly be able to mend the pieces so carelessly shattered?
As David's phone buzzed, the moment of clarity was punctuated by the apprehensive weight of reality. He checked the screen, and Lena could see a flash of concern cross his features.
“It’s the hospital,” he said, rising abruptly. “They’re giving me updates about Sofia. I should take this.”
After a moment of hesitation, Lena nodded. “Go ahead.” As David stepped out of the room to take the call, Lena’s heart raced. Alone with her thoughts, she replayed the earlier fight and wondered if she would ever come to terms with Sofia’s presence in their lives.
The memory of their confrontation resurfaced unbidden, the adrenaline-fueled rage swirling in her chest. Despite her regret, a flicker of anger rekindled. Sofia’s the one who intruded—she instigated this chaos, Lena thought bitterly. She needs to face the consequences of her actions, not just against me, but against our family.
A few moments later, David returned, his expression serious. “Sofia has a few bruised ribs, but thankfully nothing’s broken. They’re keeping her for observation overnight. It could have been much worse.”
Lena felt a rush of relief mixed with guilt. “That’s good… but also terrible. I can’t believe I let it escalate like that.”
“You were fighting for what you love,” David said gently. “But now it’s time to focus on how we heal.”
“What’s the plan?” Lena asked, striving to shift her focus onto something productive. She sensed the urgency of needing to rebuild trust—not just between herself and David, but as a family unit.
“Let’s figure out how to approach Chris first, then we tackle the elephant in the room—Sofia,” David said. “Maybe we can frame our discussions with Chris around honesty. He needs to know he’s valued, no matter how messy things get.”
Closing her eyes briefly, Lena took a deep breath, steeling herself for the challenges ahead. “Okay. I can do this.”
“Can we do it now?” David inquired, his voice steadier now.
“Let’s wait just a bit. I think he needs a moment to unwind after everything,” Lena suggested.
“Right. After all this, I want to ensure we’re both ready.”
They spent the next while in relative silence, Lena drifting into her own thoughts while David busied himself with small tasks around the living room. Their connection may have been frayed, but they both felt the gravity of the moment. In the back of Lena’s mind, she couldn’t shake the feeling that their rivalries with Sofia were far from over.
When the clock struck seven, Lena felt her heart race as she approached Chris's room. She knocked gently, breathing deeply before entering. He was sprawled on his bed, his fingers dancing across his tablet screen as he focused.
“Hey, champ,” Lena said, forcing a smile. “Can we talk for a moment?”
“Sure, Mom!” he replied, looking up from his device. The light in his eyes filled Lena with warmth, but it also filled her with fierce determination to protect his innocence.
David entered behind her, standing quietly as Lena took her place beside Chris. She felt the enormity of the moment pressing in on her.
“Chris, there’s something important we need to talk to you about,” she began, unsure of how to frame the reality they were facing.
Chris tilted his head, a mix of curiosity and concern washing over his face. “Is everything okay with you and Dad?”
Lena exchanged a glance with David, who nodded encouragingly. She swallowed hard, fighting against the painful realization that their family was not okay at all.
