Narien stood tall and proud, looking over his pack. Everyone around us began to quiet down, seeing their Alpha ready to speak. He cleared his throat and suddenly it felt like the whole room went silent. With that, my heart began to race.
“Good evening everyone,” he said in his Alpha-Leader voice. “I’ve gathered you all here today to reveal some important information. This is information I’ve neglected to share with the pack, but I hope in time that you will forgive me.”
There was some slight movement and confusion from the pack, but no one spoke. Narien took a deep breath and continued onwards. “Two weeks ago, Ithalia launched an attack against one of our own. At the time, we stated it was for unknown reasons, but in reality she was attacking to kill.
“Years ago, Ithalia and I met while in high school. At the time, I didn’t really know who she was, just a rogue wolf it seemed to me, but as time went on I could feel the two of us growing close to one another. Upon graduation and with council from my father and various other pack members, it was determined that I might be mateless.
“This was not an easy bit of information to swallow, as you all might expect.” He laughed, and the rest of the pack laughed with him. “But I was grateful to have met Ithalia, who was also mateless. We bonded over that and grew closer and closer to one another over time. What I did not realize over these past few years was that Ithalia had been manipulating me. She was a sad, lone, rogue wolf who was mateless, and instead of taking that at face value, she decided to make me love her.”
Narien paused as the pack became restless. Before anyone could speak though, Narien spoke once more. “What I’m here to announce today is my mate. Turns out, I’m not mateless. I’ve had a mate this whole time and because of Ithalia, I forgot who she even was. But as you all know, the mate bond doesn’t lie. We Wolves know upon first contact who our mates are.”
The pack became excited now. Cheers began to erupt and Narien smiled in response to this. “I’m very excited to announce Amethia as the Dark Moon Pack’s new Luna.”
Silence.
I froze. My smile disappeared from my face. Narien looked to me with worried eyes and I felt tears sting at the corners of my eyes. I could feel all of my fears come racing back to me. Then, just as quickly as the fears came, they disappeared. The pack began hooting and hollering with excitement and Narien smiled the brightest smile at me. He held out his hand and I took it, standing next to him.
Everyone smiled and cheered, and I felt at ease. I took the podium, taking a deep breath, trying to keep a calm, firm composure. I pushed my hair behind my ear and the crowd died down. “Thank you, everyone. I’m not going to lie here. I used to never feel at place in the Dark Moon Pack. From a young age I made the decision to distance myself from the pack because I felt like a burden to everyone here. My family that I love so dearly understood my decision. I mean, my father and my brothers are Wolves and I myself am like my mother, completely normal. It was through a stroke of fate that I came back to the pack house with my family, and that I discovered my new family.
“I can assuredly promise you that I, despite not having a Wolf like all of you will do everything in my power to be as strong and as reliable as Kaeala was before me. I am here for you. I am here for all of you. Being Luna is much more than being a Wolf. It is being a confident mate to your Alpha, and I will do everything in my power to protect him. Narien’s been through a lot, he’s told you all that much. I promise to be everything Ithalia wasn’t. While I can’t engage and be a warrior, I can be a diplomat, an ambassador. I want nothing more than this now. I’ve found where I belong. And while I’m still a little bit shocked that it is with the Dark Moon Pack, I promise that I am happy and there is no place I’d rather be now.”
Cheers erupted from the crowd. I looked to Narien and he smiled his brightest smile back at me, which warmed my heart. I then looked to my family and my father clapped with a large smile on his face. My brothers were on their feet cheering for me and Kaeala was stood next to them. Erandius was also smiling and clapping along with the rest of the crowd, though his eyes were fixed on his son.
I let out a huge sigh of relief and turned to find comfort in my mate. He quickly enveloped me in his warmth, planting a gentle kiss on my head before releasing me and taking the podium once more.
“That will be all for today’s meeting. The investigation into Ithalia is still ongoing. She is still imprisoned on our land and talks are still ongoing with her group of rogues as to how her crimes will be handled. Thank you, and good night.” Narien said very briefly before pulling me to his side once more.
The pack meeting dispersed and many came to properly greet me and congratulate Narien. I didn’t stop smiling the entire time. I was overjoyed with how warmly everyone was treating me. Even my aunties came up to me to congratulate me and give me a solid “told you so” too.
Before I knew it we were back in the Alpha’s house, or well, I guess my house now too? When I thought of that I realized something. Narien and I should not be sleeping in different beds at night.
We made our way upstairs and as we walked down the hallway, I slowed to a stop. “Will you help me move my stuff into your room?” I asked Narien slowly. “I mean… If that’s okay for you?”
His jaw dropped. “You mean… really?”
“Well it would probably seem kinda suspicious if the Alpha and the Luna didn’t even share a bedroom.” I said carefully. “Besides, having a big bed all to myself feels weird.”
Narien laughed, grabbing my hand and pulling me toward my room. He helped me grab my things, which wasn’t a lot, and we brought it to his room. He quickly emptied drawers for my clothes and made space for my things elsewhere. He was so excited to have my stuff mingled with his. I sat on his bed as I watched him fuss about his desk. I giggled, which caught his attention.
“You think this is funny?” He joked about.
I shrugged. “I think it’s cute. Your enthusiasm is very endearing.”
He walked towards me before flopping on the bed next to me. “Well I’m exhausted. I’ll worry about that stupid desk tomorrow.”
I nodded, laying back next to him. “Alright, I’ll kick your butt if you don’t. I need that desk for deskly things you know.”
He gave me a playful shove at my words, and I laughed in response. “Thank you for helping me move over, or… in?” I said slowly. “Thank you for letting me. And thank you for giving me time to ease into this whole thing.”
“Of course Amimi, anything for you.” He smiled back at me. I was about to say something else when suddenly he jumped up.
“What’s wrong?” I asked worriedly.
His eyes found mine and he calmed slightly. “It’s another attack. I have to go Amethia-”
“I’m coming with you.” I stated firmly.
“No.” His Alpha voice came out and sent a shiver down my spine. “It’s too dangerous.”
I clenched my jaw. “Then tell me something I can do, Alpha.” I replied to him with determination in my heart.
He recognized this and nodded. “Find the non-warriors and children. Offer them refuge in the cellar of this house. Do you remember where the entrance is?”
“I do.”
“Good. Take them there. Do not open the doors for anyone unless it is myself or Marsen. We’ll signal one of the Wolves with you when things are handled.” He took a deep breath. “This is a lot to take on so please tell me if you’re uncomfortable with doing this.”
“No, Narien… I want to do something. I need to help.” I spoke calmly.
“Okay, okay.” He ran a hand through his hair. “I’m going to be thinking about you the whole time. The fact that we haven’t mated yet is going to kill me.”
“What do you mean?” I asked raising an eyebrow.
He shook his head. “Nevermind, I’ll tell you later. Go now, I believe in you.”
I nodded my head once. “Okay.” I then turned to leave but Narien quickly grabbed my arm and spun me back around and pulled me into a kiss.
“I love you Amethia.” He spoke softly into my ear. “Don’t die or I swear to god I’ll kill you.” He then pushed me out the door before I could get a response in and I took this as my chance to run to the pack house.
I had to fulfill my duties as Luna. This was my first test.
