NARIEN
Fuck.
Fuuuuuuck.
Well, there goes all my progress with Amethia. I didn't even want to look at her. I knew that I was totally in the shitter with her right now and trying to do or say anything would probably make her mad.
Instead, I heard her laugh.
Out of shock I turned to see her expression. Instead, I watched as she wiped tears from her eyes. This wasn't a joyous laugh, I soon realized.
"Figures." She mumbled. "I'm going to go now so that you two can, well, figure that out." She stood, leaving her book and heading towards the staircase.
I pursed my lips before speaking. "I'll come-"
"Don't." She quickly cut me off without even looking at me.
Marsen scratched his head. "Don't say I didn't tell you so," he said.
"Yeah, alright." I snarled back. "I don't know how she's pregnant though. The only time I've ever not used protection was with Amethia."
"Are you sure?" Marsen questioned quickly.
"Of course I'm f*****g sure!" I growled, standing up. I rubbed my brow before continuing. "We barely even had s*x to begin with, and she said that she was on birth control anyways. We didn't want to have pups before we were married. Goddess, the idea of being with Ithalia now disgusts me."
Marsen nodded his head. "We should get to the bottom of this, Narien."
"Lead the way," I groaned, following Marsen out the door of my house.
We didn't have to walk too far. Marsen was holding her in one of the cellars nearby. There used to be a house here too, but it burnt down when I was only a child. I don't remember much of it, truth be told. Nowadays we continue to use the cellar for storage and keeping prisoners. Not that we have prisoners all that often.
I saw Ithalia looking completely ragged behind a small set of bars and chained to a pole. With her hands tied behind her back she would be unable to shift since if she tried she would instantly break her arms and quite possibly her back too.
"You." I muttered. "Speak to me." I called out to her in the dark.
She looked up and sneered at me. "You used to be so kind and gentle with me, Narien. What happened?"
Marsen snapped at her. "You will not call him by his name!"
"You attacked my mate," I replied calmly. "You attacked me subsequently."
She laughed. "I still don't think you understand, Narien. I asked the Moon Goddess for a blessing and she gave me you."
"ENOUGH!" Marsen shouted.
I huffed angrily. "What do you mean by that?" I asked.
Ithalia rolled her eyes. "I'll speak when your mutt leaves."
"Marsen, leave." I demanded without hesitation.
"But Alpha," he whimpered in response to my quick words.
"I'll only be a moment." I tried to reassure him as best as I could.
He then nodded and left without another word. I knew he'd be waiting for me outside the cellar doors. "Speak, woman." I said once the door was shut behind me.
"Do you know how hard it is to live as a rogue?" She asked drearily, looking up at her cell. "Nothing is worse than going to a school full of Werewolves and constantly being pushed around because you're not part of one of the big bad packs. So what do I do? I decide to transfer schools once I get to high school. That day before I left my house I prayed. I prayed to the Moon Goddess that I would receive a blessing, one so that I wouldn't be alone anymore. I walked into my brand-new school and laid eyes on you. Future Alpha of the Dark Moon Pack, Narien."
I sighed. "So... you saw me and you thought what exactly?"
She smirked, meeting my gaze. "I thought that you were perfect. I was mateless and I was going to make you mine. As I started seeing more and more of you, I realized that you were infatuated with that little human of yours. Amethia this, Amethia that. You were constantly asking her brothers about how she was. I knew instantly that this was the early beginnings of the Mate Bond."
I slammed my hands on the bars. I could barely think straight I was so angry. "What did you do to me?" I demanded with pure rage dripping from my voice.
"I focused your attention on me. There's this plant, an herb to be specific, it's very rare and is rumoured to cause your one true love return your feelings for you. I sought it out, and believe it or not, I found it!"
I growled. "You're making this bullshit up."
"I am not! Need I remind you that we're Werewolves, the creatures of fairy tales?" She asked with a devious smile on her face. "Anyways, I gathered it up, and slowly bit by bit began sneaking it into your food. Soon enough it was goodbye Amethia and hello Ithalia!"
"You're disgusting." I spat, turning away from her. "You're such a selfish woman, as expected of a Rogue."
"Yes, well this Rogue wants to be released into the custody of the other Rogues she used to live with." She replied in a sing-song voice. I'd never heard her speak this way before in my life.
I shook my head, refusing to look at her anymore. "Over my dead body," I grumbled. "You will be punished for your crimes here, first."
"But surely you cannot inflict such a harsh punishment on a pregnant woman!" She cried out.
I turned back to her. That's right, the whole reason I came down here originally was to sniff out what was going on. "What kind of game is this?"
"There is no game, Alpha." She replied softly. "I am currently with child. Your child, to be specific."
"That is no child of mine." I snapped back at her.
She c****d her head to the side. "But it is. I carry the heir to the Dark Moon Pack whether you like it or not. I'm going to give birth to the next Alpha, and there is nothing you can do about it."
"No!" I snarled. "Only the children that Amethia bares will be able to inherit the Alpha title."
She laughed. "You seem to have forgotten, dear Alpha, that the code is absolute. The first born to the Alpha shall be the one to inherit the title. Since I am pregnant and you haven't even marked dear Amethia yet, it seems as though my child will be your heir."
"Keep her name out of your filthy mouth," I said through clenched teeth. Screw that stupid code that my pack abided by. I want nothing to do with it. What I decide will be absolute because I am the Alpha, and what I say goes.
Except I couldn't do that. Some members of my pack might get angry, morale would drop, and we might even lose members too. Disowning the code would mean complete disarray for my pack and I wasn't ready for that.
"Rest assured that the child will be tested for paternity." I added on.
Ithalia actually looked hurt for the first time since I'd seen her down here. "You think that I'd sleep with someone other than yourself?"
"Yes." I said firmly. "Considering all the other things you've done to me, I wouldn't even be surprised at this point."
"I guess we'll have to wait and see then," she slowly returned to her evil smirk.
I turned away from her, heading towards the stairs. "No, we will be doing a test before the thing is born." I said, glancing back at her once more.
"Impossible!" She shouted, her voice cracking.
I began up the stairs. "I'm sure someone out there will do the test. I'm willing to pay a large sum to prove it."
"No!" She screamed after me. "You can't! I won't allow it!"
I shut the cellar doors behind me, cutting Ithalia off. I sighed once I was free. I loathed seeing her now, it was such an awful feeling.
"How did it go?" Marsen asked from where he sat a few meters away.
I joined him, plopping myself down in the long grass where the house once stood. "About as well as you'd expect it to go."
"Did you figure out who the father is?" He asked.
"No." I grumbled. "She seems opposed to a paternity test, so I'm willing to wager a lot of money that it's not my child."
"Good, wouldn't want the code to prevail in this sort of situation." Marsen replied, looking up to the sky.
I groaned. "Would you shut up about the stupid code?"
"Why?"
"I wish it didn't exist. I don't want anything to get in the way of Amethia and I." I answered. "I was making progress with her today before you showed up. She was actually agreeing to marriage."
"Ah, I see." Marsen looked away. "Though there's no guarantee that Amethia will produce Werewolf heirs for the pack."
I growled loudly at his words. "How dare you speak that way of her," I said angrily.
Marsen quickly looked back at me with big, pleading eyes. "Ah! I didn't mean it that way Narien, I'm sorry!"
I stood, brushing my legs off. I chose to ignore his previous statement. "I'm going to find my mate now. If anyone asks about my interrogation, say nothing. Also order the doctor that examined her to stay quiet as well. I don't need this headache to get any bigger than it already is."
"Of course, Alpha." Marsen nodded before standing and heading off towards the pack house. I began to trudge back to my own home, knowing full well that this next conversation with Amethia wasn't going to be very easy at all.
