To say I could feel my whole world shattering is an understatement. The understatement of the year, actually. The instant Ithalia's name came from Narien's lips I felt my world freeze over. I fell back in shock and before anyone else could react, I stood and left the room.
"Amethia! Amethia wait!" My father called after me.
I didn't want to talk to him. I didn't want to talk to anybody right now. My biggest fear was finally being realized and I was scared absolutely shitless. I needed to be alone to think. I needed to gather myself and my thoughts and I just really needed space.
I left the Alpha's residence and my father quit his pursuit once he reached the front door. I heard him sigh before shutting the door. I continued to power walk to my little cottage, tears now stinging at my eyes. I picked up the pace, I really didn't want anyone to see me this vulnerable.
I swung the front door open and locked it behind me. Tears began to fall indiscriminately down my cheeks. I could feel my heart breaking into tiny little pieces. Everything hurt, and nothing felt okay.
"Ame," Katson's voice rung out, scaring me. I spun around, my face drenched in tears and looked him up and down.
"How did-" I croaked out.
"Dad linked me," He explained.
"Where's Torka?" I asked.
Katson shrugged. "Goofing off somewhere, I'm sure."
I bit my bottom lip. "Katson, I-" My voice wavered and instantly Katson grabbed me and held me in his arms. Katson was always the comforting brother to me. While both of my brothers were insanely protective of me, Katson was a bit gentler than Torka was. I'm pretty sure Katson was the comforting brother to Torka too, but I never really saw the vulnerable side of any of the men in my family.
"You're scared, I get it." He said softly, petting my head.
I began to sob into his chest and Katson didn't stop holding me for a second. When I had calmed down for a second he pulled me to the small living room and sat me down while going to make me a cup of tea.
I took a few deep breaths. I was living my worst nightmare right now. My own husband didn't remember me, and he'd promised me that he'd never forget me. I know I'm supposed to try and help him remember everything, but right now... My hands pressed to my stomach gently.
"Oh my God. You are pregnant." Katson remarked when he saw me.
My hands shot to my sides. My lip quivered again and tears flooded my vision. Katson rushed to my side again, placing the mug full of tea on the small coffee table before pulling me into his arms again.
"What do I do?" I sobbed. "This isn't how this was supposed to happen!"
Katson hushed me. "It's going to be alright, Amethia. I promise. Everyone is here for you just as much as they are Narien."
"You can't tell anyone, Katson." I said firmly, tears still streaming down my cheeks.
Katson sighed. "I really don't think that's a good idea Ame..." He shook his head. "But let's not talk about it right now."
"You're the only person who knows, so please, just keep it a secret for a bit longer." I wiped my face and looked at him directly in the eyes. "Besides, I don't know for sure... I haven't done any official tests, I just kinda pieced together a few puzzle pieces."
"Still," Katson said softly. "It's usually a pretty blatant puzzle."
"Yeah," I mumbled.
Katson released me finally and reached for the tea, handing it to me. "Here," he said gently. "Drink up. It'll help you feel better, I promise."
"Mom's tea?" I asked with big eyes.
"You know it," Katson smiled back at me.
When my brothers and I were kids, our mother had a tea blend she used to make herself. She then added a few other ingredients to somehow make it taste amazing. I'm pretty sure one of them was honey. The only one of the three of us that could properly recreate her tea was Katson. He made it whenever someone in our house was having a rough time.
I felt sleepy soon after drinking the tea. I think my exhaustion was catching up to me once again. Katson noticed this and ended up carrying me to my bedroom. He tucked me into bed, shutting off the light. "I won't be far," he said gently while shutting the door. "Sleep well, Amethia."
I sleepily nodded back at Katson. I wanted to say something, but my drowsiness overcame me and I was asleep shortly after he'd left. I guess I really was tired.
The next morning started as per usual. Morning sickness followed by a shower to rid myself of the yucky feeling. I wasn't exactly hungry, but I knew I needed to eat something. I settled on some yogurt and berries, something light on my stomach, and ate in silence.
I wanted Narien back so badly. He'd be doting on me right now if everything was fine. But nothing was fine. Everything hurt. I had no idea how to go about my day at this point.
I decided on staying home today. I didn't want to go to the Alpha's residence and see anyone. The thought hurt my heart more than I'd like to admit. Instead, I sunk back into the couch and pulled my phone from the cushions where it had fallen last night. I checked my notifications, and had about a million missed called and texts from Laila.
ame!!! ame answer your freaking phone!
you are so lucky i know you're alive. i'm gonna whip your ass tomorrow.
amethia, i'm here for you okay. please call me or text me asap.
love you bestie. please reply soon.
Those were just a few of the messages that caught my eye. I sighed, I guess I really shouldn't have gone silent like that. I pressed the little phone icon next to her name in my phone and pressed the receiver to my ear.
Not even a full ring before she answered. "Are you at the Alpha's Residence? I'm almost there."
"No," my voice croaked out, completely ruined from all the crying I'd done yesterday. "I'm at home."
"YOU WENT BACK TO YOUR HOUSE?" She shouted.
I laughed, realizing how much I missed her. "No Laila, the cottage."
"Now that is a sound I like to hear. I'm here." She then hung up before knocking on the door once. I shook my head, standing to answer the door. She burst through the doorway and grabbed me in her arms, once again squeezing me a little bit too tight.
"I love you so much, Ame. I'm here for you, okay?" She said before releasing me. I smiled back at her, realizing how exhausted I must look.
"Love you too Lails." I sighed contently.
Laila clapped her hands together. "Alright, let's get to baking."
"What?" I asked curiously.
"Baking!" She exclaimed happily, throwing her hands in the air. "It always makes me feel better, because then afterwards you can stuff your gut with cookies."
I laughed, following behind her. This was the perfect distraction for me right now. My best friend was going to make sweets with me so that we could eat them all later.
While Laila dug through my kitchen for utensils and mixing bowls, I began to grab ingredients from the pantry and fridge. We worked mostly in silence, until Laila pulled out her phone and began to blast music. Soon, our baking turned into a messy dance party. I followed Laila's instructions but we continually got distracted by new songs coming on and we had to sing along.
I laughed. This was the happiest I'd felt in the past 2 months. I was so grateful for Laila in this moment. She truly was the best friend a girl like me could ask for.
In the middle of one song, Laila accidentally cut her hand open. I gasped, grabbing her hand and quickly shoving it under the faucet and running cold water over it.
"Amethia, i'll be fine. Wolves have super healing, remember?" Laila joked, removing her hand from the water.
I grabbed her phone, pausing the music. I then grabbed her wrist and stuck her hand back under the water. "Just because you heal fast doesn't mean you're not susceptible to infection." I raised an eyebrow at her.
She rolled her eyes at me. I stuck my tongue out at her in response before looking to her hand which I still held under the water. I faced her palm towards me. It wasn't a deep cut or anything like that, extremely superficial, but I wanted to make sure it was fully cleaned out since hands can get nasty. Especially hands that were just full of flour and sugar.
I brushed my fingers across the cut, assessing it one last time before releasing her. "I'm going to go get you some bandaids. Stay here." I commanded her.
Before I even left the kitchen however, Laila called out to me. "Um, Amethia?"
I turned to her. "Laila, please just let me help."
She thrust her palm towards me. It was fully healed. I sighed, shrugging my shoulders. "Well, that was fast." I walked back towards her.
"No, Ame... That wasn't me." Laila said.
"What do you mean?" I asked, my brows knotted.
Before I could stop her she grabbed the knife again and reopened her wound. I ran towards her and wrestled the knife out of her hand and back into the sink. "Are you crazy?" I asked with bewildered eyes.
"Look!" She exclaimed.
I looked down at her hand and saw it healing where my fingers sat. Without prompting, I brushed my fingers along the wound again and waited. Before I knew it, the cut healed over without a single scar. Laila and I looked at each other in the eyes.
"You're a healer, Ame!" Laila exclaimed happily, pulling me into a hug.
I blinked, letting Laila hug me yet again. "Is this... a normal Wolf thing?" I asked carefully.
She pulled away from me, her hands holding onto my shoulders so that she could man-handle me easily. "It's a rare ability now, it used to be a lot more common among non-warrior Wolves. But you have it! You're so much more Wolf than we ever thought! This is a great sign Ame!"
I looked down to my hands, which I held up to my waist to look at. "I can heal...?" I said softly. My eyes met with Laila's once more. "Do you think... I can heal Narien?"
Her eyes darted back and forth on my face. "Ame, I don't want to give you any false hope, but if it's a brain injury that's affecting Narien, then, most likely you can heal him."
Tears flooded my vision. "I-I have to try!" I exclaimed.
Laila smiled. "Of course you do." She then glanced down at me. "Are you okay Ame? Do you feel sick or something?"
I looked down and saw that I had instinctively reached to my stomach. I looked back up to Laila, removing my hands from my stomach and smiled. "Nervous. Tons of butterflies in my stomach." I said, trying to cover up my mistake.
"C'mon," she said, pulling me along. "I'll be by your side to keep you calm the whole time."
I nodded. "Okay," I said as she grabbed my hand and we began to make our way to the Alpha's Residence.
