Chapter 13 POV Charlie - Werewolf History
As we were walking down the hallways towards our next class, my mind kept drifting back to the Shadow Moon pack. I can’t seem to get their safety off my mind. My thoughts were suddenly interrupted by Martin asking me where I wanted to sit. I didn't even realize we had walked all the way to class. The four of us took some seats near the back. No need to be the keener of the front row, the back will suit me just fine. I can pay attention when needed and catch up on sleep when necessary. I internally laughed at myself.
I’m not exactly thrilled about attending this class. I mean I am a werewolf. Why do I need to learn even more about us? I want to learn strategy, pack financing. Not who killed who before I was even an idea of a person. Just then, our teacher walked in, only about 5 minutes after we all settled in. She is very pretty. She stands about 5’10, with long black hair, naturally rosy cheeks, and somehow looks insanely strong but also elegant.
“Good afternoon class. My name is Mrs. Storm. I will be your werewolf history teacher. I know many of you believe you have nothing to learn from history.
‘Well she’s got that right.’ I can hear Iris snicker in response.
“I can assure you, you are wrong. First off, this semester we will be learning about the werewolf and vampire war and treaty.” Well, this is intriguing. I know my grandfather helped make that treaty but, in all, honestly, I really don’t know much about it. No one really talks about vampires anymore. I know they used to be major players in wolf demises, and that the war ended in a treaty between our species, but other than that, no one my age really knows much about them.
“With this class you will learn about the causes of the war, what went on during the war and how it ended. I will also have a few guest speakers on the subject. A former alpha from the Blood Moon pack who was there and helped create the treaty with the vampires, as well as one of the corresponding vampires who created and signed the treaty.” At this, the whole class gasped. As part of the treaty, we all knew that vampires were to stay out of wolf territory, so none of us had ever met a vampire. All we really know about them is that they are incredibly fast, most can't enter daylight except those who have a daylight tool, and they drink blood. One of the main reasons for the war as far as I remember was because the Vampires wanted more territory to hunt, so they began wiping out small packs and turning werewolf territory into vampire territory. They would drink whole packs dry. It was a really dark time. I shivered at the thought that a vampire would now be here in our classroom.
“Yes, I realize many of you might be discouraged to come to class with a vampire, but I assure you, you're safe. We have this particular vampire here every year to talk to in the first years. It's crucial to your education. With the treaty in place, you have nothing to fear. Vampires have not been a problem for wolves in many, many years.” She said that with such confidence, but something still felt hard in the pit of my stomach at the thought of being face to face with a vampire. By looking around, I felt the others thought the same. A cold shiver ran up my spine, as I recalled those red eyes peering out from the tree line just yesterday. No, it couldn’t be. Or could it?
‘I think you’re onto something, Charlie. I think we need to be very careful. There are things you don’t know, things I can’t tell you yet, but if that was a vampire in the woods that day. We need to be very careful.’ The pit in my stomach got deeper.
‘What do you mean you can’t tell me yet?’ Since when does Iris keep secrets?
‘When the time is right I’ll be able to. Just be careful for now’. I rolled my eyes, I saw Iris retreat to the back of my mind and knew the conversation was over. Thank Iris for the confidence. I rolled my eyes.
Before the war, werewolves and vampires lived at some peace with each other. Based on mutual survival. Each had their territory, though the wolves didn’t believe in the vampire's ways of killing their food (AKA humans), they couldn't fault them for surviving. As long as they left the wolves alone and their territory, werewolves didn't get involved in the affairs of Vamps. In fact, some wolves and vampires got along so well they actually ended up being true mates. Which in turn became a problem. For when a vampire mated with a wolf, they would join the wolf pack. Which caused the first territory to take over.
The vampire's name was Katarina. She was the daughter of the king of vampires, King Dimitri. One day when she was out hunting with her friends , she came across a young wolf pup. The friends wanted to bring the pup home and raise it to be a slave. Katarina said no, something about the pup gave her pause. In the distance, they heard someone yelling for the pup. They dropped the cub and scattered so they couldn't be seen by older wolves or it might cause a war. Though Katarina couldn’t give up her feeling of attachment for the pup, she stayed behind to watch.
Out from the edge of the forest, the young pup ran to the arms of an older wolf. He called him uncle Mikale. Katarina found this particular wolf to be gorgeous, strong, and she became instantly enthralled by him. She noticed the wolf smelled the air and her body hitched. Then he met her eyes. Their connection sprung to life. He sent the young pup home and then turned to walk over to her. He knew she was a vampire by her smell, but this inexplicable pull to her made him go to her. Some say she compelled him, but he always said it was the mate's pull.
They didn’t know what to say or do, so they embraced each other. Once they held onto one another, they knew they could never let the other go. This, unbeknownst to them at the time, was the spark to begin the war.” Ms. Storm looked out at the class and I’m sure everyone was enthralled as I was.
I think I was in a state of shock, a vampire and a wolf in a mate bond. How had I never heard of this, what happened to them? Why did this start a war? I didn’t know I could be so wrong about not wanting to learn history. I needed to hear more.
Mrs. Storm was about to continue talking about the war and its beginnings, but then the bell rang and we all got up to leave. Training and werewolf history are the only classes for this semester, as in the first years they really want to get us in shape. I couldn’t have been happier. Before I left the class, I asked Ms. Storm, if there were any books on this subject, she knowingly smiled at me and told me if I liked I could always visit the library and see them.
“But I think you’ll enjoy this story much better listening to me tell it in class.” and she winked at me.
I decided to let it go for now. She's probably right and I’m just being impatient trying to see how the story goes before she can finish it.
So I caught up with the others and we all headed back to the training field for afternoon training.
