Caroline studied her hand. The ring, made from two parallel loops of gold wire, had a pattern of random scrolling lines and a pink pearl. It must have taken an impossibly tiny tool to make such intricate loops. “Oh, it’s so pretty, Victor. Why on earth would you say it’s not a real engagement ring?” “It’s not a diamond,” he said, as though that explained everything. “So? Don’t have such a one-track mind. You’re not an engineer yet.
