The Alley
"You are such a loser."
Yes! I hear you. I opened my eyes after squinting them as she was about to slap me but she never did. I heard her sardonic laugh with her friends.
"What are you gonna do about it?" One of them said as she pulled my hair.
Please no more. I was about to burst in tears but there was that part of me that don't want to reveal how weak I was. Countless of times, I cried in front of my torturers in school but this time, it was like I ran out of liquid but the desire to get away from everything and cry it all out on a dark room alone was still there.
Suddenly, I had the urge to fight back. I looked at the blonde popular girl still pulling a handful strands of my hair. I didn't waste time to bite her hand and pushed her away. It was my opportunity to run so I took it. Running away through the halls which was filled with a swarm of students, it gave me a bit of relief to finally lost my bullies.
Never again I would stick around to dark corners and silent halls in the school grounds. It was always the best place for sharks to feast on. Yet, I find being alone by myself quite self-satisfying. To be frank, I belong to the nobodies when it comes to classifying myself to classic stereotypes. Nobodies don't have bestfriends. Even sometimes, I'd be thankful to at least have a fake friend. But I'm guessing this best high school dream life was never for me.
Like a cliché sad teenager would say, it's better to be alone.
I walked out of the building and headed to my bike. It was time to go home. Although, I never called it home when two adults who supposed to be my caring and loving guardians were total drunkards and sometimes, never home to prepare some delicious dinner for their only adopted daughter. Every night, my not biological father would invite some drunk men and believe me, they feel very much at home. Especially, coming upstairs and knocking at my door saying, "Hey sweetie." I would escape every time that happens.
I have a little secret though. When I escape, I'd get myself out through my window and go to a safe place. My favorite place in the world. The alley. There was this abandoned room where I stayed for a couple of nights when my parents tried to hit me.
I made a quick turn to the direction where the alley was. I didn't feel like getting extra dramas at that wretched house after getting some from school. The alley was a place for me to get a peace of mind.
The alley was overwhelming with wind shuffling trash into corners, dogs rooting through garbage and cats meowing. It was still inhabited with people coughing or talking in low voices and music from clubs with back entrances. This feels like home.
Thinking about that made me realize I'm as close to a homeless man. It doesn't change the fact that there are several eviction notices on the doorstep at the house.
I walked towards the old rusty door. Stepping inside after unlocking the closed metal door lock, I turned the lights on. The globe string lights wasn't easy to get but it was worth the effort as it gave extra decoration for the room, making it pretty habitable. After finding this room uninhabited, it took time to clean the place and set some belongings. I knew one day, someone is going to find this place because for all I know, this building isn't even mine.
Sitting down at my small bed I prepared months ago, I closed my eyes, thinking I've had a long day and I deserved some rest. I almost fell asleep when I heard something. A cry. A wailing. It was from a girl's.
"Come here you little freak." Someone said. It was another girls voice.
I was going to ignore what was happening outside but it took minutes to make me anxious. I take a breath. Was it another one of me who's getting bullied?
I looked at the baseball bat laying down beside the table. That's it, I had enough with bullies. I grabbed the bat and took a deep breath. I opened the door and looked outside. A few distances away. A person lying down as she begs for help as two more person were laughing at her.
I gripped my bat in front of me. I yelled, "Hey, Leave her alone!"
They didn't seem to have heard me. They continued grabbing the victim's arm and speaking stuff I couldn't hear due to music blaring from some club.
"Hey!" I yelled once more.
Before I could do something, my eyes widen as something unimaginable has happened right in front of me. A black cloud appeared at the bully's hand and pointed at the girl. The cloud went through her mouth in a quick time as her whole body shaken. Her frightening screams filled up the entire alley. Her body became to disintegrate and for a blink it was no longer there.
I dropped the bat in panic. Suddenly, the persons who were the only ones left saw me. Great.
