The darkest night
Ring,ring,ring Max Wellington woke up early, his alarm blaring in his small bedroom. He rubbed his eyes, yawned, and got dressed for school.
Max lived with his parents in the suburban town of Oakwood, just outside Ravenwood City. His school, Oakwood High, was a typical American high school – until the recent strange occurrences in Ravenwood City...
Max grabbed his backpack and headed downstairs for breakfast.Max grabbed his bike and rushed to school. He arrived just as the first bell rang, slipping into his seat in Mr. Jenkins' history class.
Everyone looked normal – his friends Jake and Emily chatted quietly, while the class clown, Matt, made funny faces ate the back.
Mr. Jenkins cleared his throat. His teacher had wrote on the board:
"Camping Trip Details
* Date: Next Friday
* Time: 9am sharp
* Pack: Tents, sleeping bags, flashlights, warm clothes
We'll be learning about local Native American tribes and their history with Ravenwood City."
Max felt a rush of excitement. He loved camping and learning about history."Alright, alright, settle down, everyone," Mr. Jenkins said, his voice firm but slightly amused. "Today we're diving into one of the most pivotal moments in history – the American Revolution. I expect you all to take detailed notes, because your quiz next week will cover this material." He began writing on the blackboard, the chalk squeaking as he outlined the key events and figures of the revolution. Max pulled out his notebook and pen, ready to jot down important points, while Matt continued to make silly faces in the background, trying to get Emily and Jake to crack up.Max tried to focus on Mr. Jenkins' lecture, but Matt's funny faces kept catching his eye. Emily and Jake were struggling to hold in giggles too.
Mr. Jenkins turned around, noticing the distraction. "Matt, care to share what's so amusing?"
Matt quickly wiped the goofy grin off his face. "No, sir! Just... uh... patriotism for George Washington!"The whole class burst into stifled laughter, and Mr. Jenkins raised an eyebrow. "Patriotism for George Washington, you say? Well, I suppose that's a noble cause, but let's hope it doesn't distract you from the lesson on, ah, the American Revolution." Matt's face turned bright red as the class erupted into full-blown snickers, and Max and Emily were holding their bellies, trying not to make a sound. Jake just shook his head, grinning. Mr. Jenkins sighed, "Alright, alright, settle down. Let's get back to the founding fathers."As class ended, Max packed up his things, still chuckling about Matt's patriotism comment.
Mr. Jenkins called out, "Don't forget, quiz on the American Revolution next week – same day we leave for the camping trip!"
Max walked out with Emily and Jake. "See you guys tomorrow!" he said.As they walked out of the classroom, Emily turned to Jake and whispered, "Camping trip and a quiz on the same day? Mr. Jenkins is playing hard, isn't he?" Jake chuckled and replied, "Guess we'll be studying around the campfire, Em!" Max, overhearing, laughed and added, "Or pulling all-nighters before we leave!"

Jake chuckled and replied, "Guess we'll be studying around the campfire, Em!" Max, overhearing, laughed and added, "Or pulling all-nighters before we leave!"When he go to the house happily says to his parents.Max burst through the front door. "Mom, Dad – guess what? We're going on a camping trip for school next Friday! And we have a quiz that day too!"
His mom smiled from the kitchen. "That sounds fun! I'll help you pack. Your dad and I were just talking about your grandparents coming over for dinner tonight – want to invite friends over too?""Whoa, slow down, Mom!" Max replied, bouncing into the kitchen. "Camping trip, yeah! But, ugh, a quiz on the same day? Can't I just take it before we leave or something? And, grandparents coming over tonight? Can I invite my friends over for dinner too? Please? It would be so much fun! Can we have a BBQ or something? That sounds awesome!"His mom laughed. "One question at a time, Max! Yes to the BBQ and inviting friends – I'll call their parents. No to taking the quiz early, sweetie, Mr. Jenkins won't allow it."
Max's dad chimed in, "How about this: we'll make it a pre-camping trip party and you can study with your friends here before dinner?"That sounds like a plan, dude! Max's dad is a genius. A BBQ party with friends and a study sesh before dinner? Max is gonna love it. Plus, his parents are on the same page, so it's a win-win. Now, let's hope Mr. Jenkins doesn't have any other rules that might rain on their parade.Max's mom smiled. "I'll call Mr. Jenkins to confirm study groups are okay – and invite Jake and Emily over. Your dad will start the BBQ around 5 pm. Go invite Matt too!"
Max grabbed his phone and texted:
"BBQ and study party at my place today! Mr. Jenkins approved study groups – come over at 3 pm?"Matt probably responded with something like: "Yaaas, BBQ and study sesh? Sounds lit! I'll be there at 3 pm sharp. What's the plan for grub?"Max replied:
"Dad's grilling burgers, hot dogs, and veggies – Mom's making salad and ice cream for dessert! Come hungry, dude!"
Then Jake texted:
"Emily and I are coming – she's bringing her notes on the Revolution, I've got the Constitution printouts – see you at 3!"Max replied:
"Dad's grilling burgers, hot dogs, and veggies – Mom's making salad and ice cream for dessert! Come hungry, dude!"
Sounds like a solid plan for a study sesh on American History, bro! You're all set with food, notes, and printouts. What's the vibe like at your place? Got enough space for everyone?Max replied:
"Plenty of space – we'll study at the dining table, then move to the backyard for BBQ and hangout time! My grandparents are coming too, but they'll mostly be chatting with my parents"
Doorbell rang – 3 pm sharp!Matt's punctuality is on point! Max opened the door to find Matt, Jake, and Emily standing there, backpacks and smiles in place. "Hey, guys! Come on in, let's get this study sesh started!" Emily held up her notes. "I've got the key dates and events covered. Let's ace this quiz!"After dinner, Max grabbed the remote. "Anyone up for some TV before study time?" He flipped channels until he landed on the local news.
Breaking News flashed on screen:
"Ravenwood City Hospital Overwhelmed with Bizarre Attack Victims – 10 people bitten, scratched, or worse since yesterday evening. Authorities baffled by cause..."
Max's grandparents exchanged worried glances.Max's mom reassured them, but his grandparents' worried glances made Max uneasy.
As his friends headed home, Emily whispered, "Meet at school tomorrow – study together at lunch too, okay?"
Max nodded, watching them leave. His parents walked his grandparents out, discussing something in hushed tones.
Max went to bed early, but barely slept.The unease in the air is palpable! Max's grandparents' worried glances and the hushed conversation between his parents have got him on edge. He's trying to focus on the camping trip and the quiz, but the mysterious news about the hospital is lingering in the back of his mind.
As he lies in bed, he might be thinking about the strange attacks and wondering if there's more to the story. The darkness outside his window seems to amplify his anxiety. Suddenly, he hears a faint scratching sound outside his window. It's soft, but it's definitely there. What could it be?Max froze, listening intensely. The scratching grew slightly louder, then paused – followed by faint tapping like fingernails on glass.
He slowly sat up, threw off covers, and approached the window.
Heart racing, he pulled back the curtain...
A tree branch swayed in the wind, tapping against the window. But then, Max saw a piece of paper stuck in the branch forks.Curiouser and curiouser! Max's heart is still racing, but his curiosity is piqued. He quickly opens the window and retrieves the paper. It's a note, scribbled in hasty handwriting: "Don't go on the camping trip. Trust me." No signature, no explanation. Just a cryptic warning. Max's mind is racing with questions. Who wrote this? How did they know about the camping trip? And what do they know that Max doesn't?In the morning he woke up and seams so quiet he saw all of the people outside is all zombie and there's a lot of vampire he realizes that he is the only one who survived.
