Chapter One: The Unwanted Crossing
ONYX
The city lights blurred into streaks of neon as Onyx vaulted over a chain-link fence, her boots hitting asphalt hard enough to crack it. Behind her, the snarls multiplied—too many, too coordinated, too *wrong*.
She'd been walking out of the underground club on Fifth, still tasting the willing donor's blood on her tongue, when the first rogue had lunged from the alley. Then another. Then a dozen more, pouring out of the shadows like they'd been waiting.
But she hadn't been tracking anyone. Hadn't pissed off any packs lately—well, no more than usual.
What the f**k is this?
Her arctic-blue eyes flashed as she pushed her speed, the belly-button piercing beneath her torn black crop top catching streetlight. The rogues were fast, but she was faster. The problem was their numbers. Twenty, maybe thirty wolves, all fixated on her like she was the last meal on earth.
She hit the edge of the city where concrete gave way to a dense wall of forest. All that mattered was using the shadows to her advantage—putting distance between herself and the horde, finding terrain where she could turn and tear them apart one by one.
A snarl erupted behind her, close enough that she felt hot breath on her neck. Onyx spun, her hand shooting out to catch the rogue by the throat mid-leap. She slammed it into a tree hard enough to splinter bark, her fingers crushing its windpipe before she hurled it into two others.
But more kept coming.
Fuck it.
She plunged into the dark woods at a dead run.
The forest swallowed her whole—ancient pines and shadows that felt alive, watching. Only once she was deep beneath the canopy did her pierced nose catch the sudden shift in the air—the heavy, suffocating scent of wolf everywhere, thick and fiercely territorial, far different from the rabid rot at her heels. But she didn't slow. The rogues crashed through behind her, their howls splitting the night.
Then the howls changed.
Deeper. Organized. Furious.
The Night Shade pack had noticed the intrusion.
Onyx's heart—which rarely bothered to race—kicked against her ribs as massive shapes exploded from the darkness ahead. Wolves the size of bears, their eyes glowing with predatory intelligence, their fur bristling with territorial rage.
She skidded to a halt in a clearing, rogues at her back, pack wolves ahead, and nowhere left to run.
"Shit."
HADES
The moment the rogues crossed his boundary, Hades felt it like a blade dragging down his spine.
He'd been in the pack house, reviewing supply routes on his laptop—because even Alpha werewolves had to deal with modern logistics—when the pack bond lit up with alarm. Lucian's mental voice crashed through: Rogues. At least thirty. They're chasing something.
Hades didn't bother with the door. He went through the window, his body already shifting mid-leap. Clothes shredded as muscle and bone reformed, his human shape giving way to the massive black wolf that was his other half. His tattoos disappeared beneath midnight fur, but the piercings—those stayed, glinting silver in his wolf's ears and the ridge above his eye.
He hit the ground running, his pack falling in around him. Lucian's gray wolf flanked him on the right, the focused urgency of his pack members surging through the bond as they swept through the trees.
The scent hit him first: rogue wolves, their stench sour with madness and lack of pack. But underneath it, something else. Something that made his wolf surge forward with an urgency that had nothing to do with territory.
Cold night. Old blood. Leather and steel.
Vampire.
His lips peeled back from his fangs. f*****g bloodsuckers on his land, with rogues at her heels—
He burst into the clearing and saw her.
The world stopped.
She stood in the center like a dark goddess, black hair whipping around a face too beautiful to be real, arctic-blue eyes blazing with power and defiance. Curves that would make a saint sin, wrapped in torn black denim and leather, piercings glinting at her nose, eyebrow, and the strip of pale stomach visible between her crop top and low-slung jeans.
And the scent.
It slammed into him like a freight train, bypassing every logical thought and hitting something primal and absolute in his chest.
Mine.
His wolf roared the word through every cell in his body, and Hades felt his control fracture. The mate bond snapped into place with brutal, undeniable certainty, a golden thread connecting him to the vampire in the center of his territory, surrounded by enemies.
His vampire.
His mate.
No. f**k no. Not possible.
But his wolf didn't care about possible. It cared that she was in danger.
Hades hit the nearest rogue like a wrecking ball, his jaws closing around its spine and snapping. The wolf went limp, and he tossed it aside, already lunging for the next. Around him, his pack tore into the rogues with vicious efficiency, teeth and claws flashing in the moonlight.
But Hades couldn't take his eyes off her.
The vampire moved like violence made art, her speed inhuman even by werewolf standards. She caught a rogue mid-leap, her delicate-looking hand punching clean through its chest and ripping out its heart. Blood sprayed across her pale skin, and she dropped the corpse without a second glance, already spinning to face the next threat.
Fuck, she's magnificent.
Another rogue lunged at her from behind. Hades was moving before he could think, his massive wolf form crashing into the rogue and bearing it to the ground. He felt ribs crack beneath his weight, tasted blood as his fangs found the throat, and then it was over.
He lifted his head and found her staring at him.
Those arctic-blue eyes widened, and he watched her nostrils flare as she caught his scent. Watched the exact moment the bond hit her, too, because her expression shifted from defiance to shock to something that looked almost like fear.
"No," she whispered.
The last rogue fell beneath Lucian's jaws, and suddenly the clearing was silent except for their harsh breathing and the sound of blood dripping onto leaves.
Hades shifted back to human form, not giving a f**k that he was naked and covered in blood. His royal-blue eyes locked on hers, and the mate bond pulled *tight*, demanding he close the distance between them, claim her, mark her, make her *his*.
"You're on Night Shade land, vampire," he growled, his voice rough from the shift. "Give me one reason I shouldn't rip your throat out."
ONYX
Onyx couldn't breathe.
The wolf—no, the man—standing in front of her was the most dangerous thing she'd ever seen. Tall, built like he'd been carved from violence and s*x, muscles shifting beneath skin decorated with intricate tattoos that covered both arms and crawled up the right side of his ribs. An eyebrow piercing caught the moonlight, and when his lips parted to speak, she caught the glint of a tongue piercing.
Royal-blue eyes pinned her in place, and the scent of him—pine and smoke and something wild—made her knees weak.
The mate bond thrummed between them, undeniable and absolutely wrong.
"I didn't lead them here," she said, hating how breathless she sounded. "They came out of nowhere. I was just trying to survive."
"Convenient." He took a step closer, and she forced herself not to back up. "Thirty rogues just *happened* to chase you onto my land?"
"You think I planned this?" Anger sparked through the shock, and Onyx let it fuel her. "You think I *wanted* to end up in the middle of a wolf pack, surrounded by the same species that just tried to rip me apart?"
"Watch your tone, bloodsucker."
"f**k you, dog."
The words were barely out of her mouth before he moved, faster than any werewolf should be able to move, his hand wrapping around her throat and slamming her back against a tree. Not hard enough to hurt—not really—but hard enough to make his point.
His body pressed against hers, naked and hot and hard, and the mate bond sang with approval.
"I'm the Alpha of this pack," he growled, his face inches from hers. "You're on my land, covered in my enemies' blood, and smelling like every fantasy I've ever had. So you're going to tell me exactly what the f**k is going on, or I'm going to make you."
Onyx's fangs descended, her own anger rising to meet his. "I. Don't. Know." She punctuated each word with emphasis, her arctic-blue eyes flashing. "I was leaving a club. They attacked. I ran. That's it."
His eyes dropped to her mouth, to her fangs, and she felt his c**k twitch against her hip.
Oh, this is bad.
"Hades." Another male voice, calmer. A gray-eyed man with sandy hair approached, pulling on a pair of jeans he must have grabbed from a stash. "The rogues are all dead. But none of this makes sense. Rogues don't usually run in numbers like this, and having that many swarm near our perimeter is unusual."
The Alpha—Hades—didn't take his eyes off Onyx. "I know, Lucian."
"So maybe she's telling the truth. She got jumped and ran blind."
"Or maybe there's something about the attack we haven't understood yet."
Onyx laughed, the sound sharp and bitter. "Coincidence? I didn't even know this was wolf territory, you i***t. Your kind has hated mine for centuries—why the hell would I purposely run straight into a pack?"
"That's what I intend to find out." His hand tightened slightly on her throat, and heat pooled low in her belly. Wrong, so wrong, but her body didn't care. "And until I do, you're not leaving."
"You can't keep me here."
His smile was all teeth. "Watch me."
LUCIAN
Lucian had known Hades since they were kids, had been his beta for eight years, and he'd never seen his Alpha lose control.
Until now.
The way Hades was looking at the vampire—like he wanted to f**k her and kill her in equal measure—set off every alarm bell in Lucian's head. And the way she was looking back, fangs bared and eyes blazing, wasn't much better.
"Hades," he said carefully. "Maybe we should take this back to the pack house. Figure out what's going on before we make any decisions."
"She's not going to the pack house."
"Then what are you going to do with her?"
Hades's jaw clenched, and Lucian watched him struggle with something. The Alpha's hand was still wrapped around the vampire's throat, their bodies pressed together in a way that was definitely not just about dominance.
Oh, f**k.
"She's my mate," Hades said finally, the words sounding like they'd been ripped out of him.
Lucian's eyes widened. "What?"
"You heard me."
"That's not possible. She's a—"
"I know what she is!" Hades's voice cracked like a whip, and several pack members who'd been approaching stopped in their tracks. "You think I don't know this is f****d up? You think I don't know this is wrong?"
The vampire—his mate, apparently—made a choked sound. "I'm standing right here, asshole."
"I'm aware." Hades's thumb stroked along her jaw, the gesture at odds with the fury in his eyes. "Believe me, I'm very f*****g aware."
Lucian ran a hand through his hair, trying to process. A vampire mate. For an Alpha werewolf. This was going to cause problems—massive, pack-threatening problems.
